Sad to see him without a club but I think this is a recurring problem for a lot of our players that moved on in the Dean Smith/Warburton era. When clubs were paying big fees for our player back in 2014-2017, as they still are, I feel like we were the only club able to get the best out of them and knew how to play them. For example, Jota was brilliant for us but has never set the world alight since leaving us, Odubajo was great and is now doing OK at QPR, Gray did well for Burnley and Watford for a bit but is now at our retirement home QPR. Hogan, Dean and Colin have never really progressed, Hogan is scoring but nothing special, Dean doesn't start for them and Colin has proven to be a decent right back. Sawyers hasn't worked out at West Brom, Ryan Woods' career has not really gone far either. Mepham has been decent for Bournemouth but not progressed very far. Players from the Smith/Warburton era seem to only have been good for us, which makes me think we were the only ones who knew how to properly utilise them
Watched Derby v Bournemouth on Sky last Sunday. Mepham played 90 minutes and looked very composed. He's playing at the top of the Championship and for Wales. Not sure how far you expected him to progress. If/when Bournemouth get promoted it will be interesting to see how he copes in the Premier League and whether he has "progressed" as far as his old partner Konsa at Villa.

I think Mepham is a great player but he hasn't progressed like others for his fee. According to various sites he went for 12m+, correct me if I am wrong, now Konsa went for a similar amount and has processed massively and is now being tipped to play for England. He is still a very good player but he hasn't exactly set the world alight at Bournemouth

Loved him. Remember Watford away, night game, not long after he joined us. The way he swerved through their players bought the away end to its feet. Knew then he was extra special and so he proved to be. Bought passion as well as skills and will always be a massive favourite. For me, just ahead of Romaine, but behind Said.
Mansley was my favourite player of that time by a merry mile. Signed from Skelmersdale? Despite BFC not having a pot to piss in then, happy days.

Conversly

Andre Gray, James Tarkowski, John Egan, Jack O'Connell, Adam Forshaw, Stuart Dallas and Romaine Sawyers off the top of my head all won promotion to the Premiership before we did. So its seem a bit rose tinted.

One thing I'll remember about Jota. It was either his GP debut or the first time I'd seen him play, early days whatever it was. A long cross field ball was played to him and he controlled it but also took it over the defender marking him in one move. He didn't get a goal from the resulting chance but my God it would have been the best goal I've ever seen live if he did.

Does this ring bells for anyone? I've not got a clue who we were playing!

Sounds more like the time he left Bidwell for dead but blazed the ball into Brook Road.

Fair point, but only 2 of your 7 players listed currently play in the Prem. I agree that there are some who have gone on to do very well

Before my time, started going in 73, no wonder Jota appeared so revelatory in contrast to those days..

Just watched a couple of videos of his goals over the years.........................

Sod it still very much one of the best ive seen.

In fact DOF........................ get him in as a squad player until the end of the season, couldnt be any worse then what Valencia is offering the squad atm.

Although his light burned short but bright, I would like to give a shout out to Tony Folan as one of those mercurial players who could do something magic
From the halfway line - well it was too far to run!

I imagine he’s 20st and red as a beetroot now. Still magic back in the day.

Will go down as one of those players you just loved to watch. Gifted us all with so many memories. And showed us firmly which direction the club was heading in. Unfortunately for him made so bad decisions/moves and never shined as bright as he did with us. Really one footed, but what a sweet left foot he had!
The scenes for that last minute agsint Fulham in Ealing road will go down in history.

He came from Blackpool who signed him from Skelmersdale after they had reached the FA Amateur Cup final. When he first came he looked overweight and Fenton looked the better signing. Two excellent signings without the scouting system that brought Jota to GP. Folan is a good shout here for the BFC Mercurial XI.

I’ve got a feeling they both signed at the same time, but it could be my memory playing tricks. According to one of my school mates, Alan Mansley had a second job, working part time in a sweet shop. Maybe that’s why he needed to lose a bit!
Getting back to Jota, he was a fantastic watch. I suppose you can’t blame him for moving for more money, but the old showbiz saying of ‘leave ‘em knowing they want more’ is pretty accurate in his case.

I read that CD Tenerife are interested in signing Jota. CDT having a decent season and looking for a return to the Primera. I really hope this happens and that I will get to see him at the Heliodoro one day. So far, only Javi Venta has played for Brentford and my other club but how brilliant it would be if Jota were to do the same.

I reckon Bidwell was a on a booking there, would've have pulled him down if not.

Or just got his undies royally pulled down.
Like Jota and we have done pretty much every time he played against us

One of the biggest wasted talents I've ever seen, not just for Brentford, as a footballer.
Folan was a class player.
Personal frailties hindered his progression
