Seems there are a few Bees fans from these parts who have a soft spot for Leatherhead. I tend to watch them when not at Bees so will update on here for anyone who is interested.

Currently they are on an 8 game winning run and 9th in the Isthmian Premier. The plans for the club to leave Fetcham Grove appear to be consigned to the dustbin and the club seem to be back on an even keel. Crowds tend to be be around 300 to 400 and a decent proportion of those go to away games. A new supporters club and lottery have recently been established with over 110 members to date. For anyone who hasn't been Fetcham Grove is a proper old style non-league ground in a very picturesque setting.

Right, enough of the bigging up. No doubt they'll now lose at East Thurrock this afternoon..

I grew up in Bookham and used to go Fetcham Grove when I was a kid. The Tanners are my second team. Pity the run ended today, hope it's just a blip. Would be lovely if they could beat Dorking in the FA Trophy. Dorking were too good for them in both League games last season, sadly.

Remember them having a high profile TV moment with a cup run in the 70's. A certain talkative Chris Kelly noticed as a goal scorer.

..............beat Leeds???..........
I think that was Wimbledon, they beat Burnley but lost to Leeds in a replay, after Dickie Guy saved a Peter Lorimer penalty

The Tanners had a cup run in the 74/75 season beating Colchester Utd and Brian Cloughs Brighton &Hove Albion before getting knocked out by1st division Leicester City after leading 2-0 at H/T, fitness (or lack of) beat them in the end.
Chris Kelly the ‘Leatherhead Lip’ went on to play for Millwall(I think) but I heard he went back to none leagues as he could earn more money working as a carpet fitter and being paid expenses to play football but don’t know how true that is.
Happy days, went to all the games.
Google the Leicester highlights, surprising now, to see how a well a bunch of part timers played against full time pros and international players.
Out of interest, when did the followers of The Tanners on here start going to Fetcham Grove?

Thanks, didn’t know that.
By the end of 75 I was living in Germany and lost touch with lots going on back home.
On the subject of The Tanners, does anyone know what happened to ‘Nobby’ Skinner? Years ago I got rinsed on the GPG for mentioning him but I thought he was better than Kelly. I thought he trialled for the Bees or possibly Putney.

I also grew up in the area (Horsley) and went to school in Effingham. Spend most of my Sunday League career at Horsley and Bookham who obviously had their better players plucked by Leatherhead.

I had a spell being coached by Alex Inglethorpe before he started his coaching career at Leatherhead.

Despite all that I’ve only seen the Tanners twice. My non league team was always Hampton due to the discounts for being a Bees ST holder and I must admit that more recently I’ve enjoyed going to Dorking just because it’s such a good setup.

A small mention in their Wiki entry.
1970s
The club reached the semi-finals of the FA Amateur Cup in 1969, losing to eventual winners Skelmersdale United, and again in 1971, falling to Ilford.[5] The hero of this era was "Nobby" Skinner, noted for his ability to "poach" a goal out of nothing.[

Well I’m blowed!!!!!! Never realised Alex Inglethorpe went to the Howard. Years after I left. I thought the only famous footballer to come out of HofE was Jonny Byrne.

Tanners also got to Wembley and the Final of the FA Trophy in 78. I was 15 but didn't try to get a ticket - I went to Fetcham Grove a few times and never saw a home win so I thought I might be a bit of jinx, maybe that's why! It wouldn't have helped if I had gone - they got beat by Altrincham. Programme is fairly easy to pick up - similarly, so is the Leicester one.

Peter McGillicudy scored the opener at Filbert Street. A name I have never forgotten.

Yep the replay was at Selhurst Park, 50K in attendance. Leeds won 1-0 with a goal from Duncan McKenzie, I was there.

I have heard of Nobby Skinner but don’t know much about him. My first game was against Northampton Town in 1976 so just missed out on Leicester cup run. Almost everyone around here seemed to have gone to Wembley in 1978. Leatherhead lost 3-1 to Altrincham and basically didn’t turn up (a tradition the bees have since maintained).

We knocked them out the following season 2-0 at Plough Lane, my first Brentford away game, very lively at Earl's Court on the way home.

Yes, it was cold and miserable. In fairness East Thurrock were stronger and better organised. Traffic was also grim. All in all not my best afternoon..

Leatherhead won 3-2 at Ramsgate last night. This weekend they travel to Lewes in the league. IMO one of the best non league grounds around with Harvey’s Sussex served straight from the barrel on the bar in the club house.

Excellent 1-0 win at Lewes today. Hanging on a bit in the end but an enjoyable game. Next up Raynes Park Vale at home on Tuesday night in the Surrey Senior Cup

Well done Tanners. Seem to remember LFC winning the Surrey Senior Cup in the 60’s. I think it was played at Tooting and Mitchams ground.

It was indeed 1969.......the wonders of google. Not sure why or what we were doing at T&M as I had wheels in 1969 and distinctly remember getting buses for the game at Sandy Lane so would have a been a few years earlier.

Nice to see tanners progressing in the cup.

K's 3-1 up with 15 minutes left, but as Hampton found out yesterday 2-0 in the 90th minute is a dangerous lead.
Well they did it. Looking forward to Tuesday evening (although weather forecast is a bit grim). Normally a good game against K’s...

A creditable 0-0 away at Margate last Saturday was followed by an excellent 1-0 win away at Cray Wanderers today. Now 4 points off the pay offs. A scare earlier in the week when the River Mole burst its banks again and flooded the pitch. Unlike 2013 however it didn’t get anywhere near to the clubhouse before subsiding..

Another good win for the Tanners. This time 2-1 at home to Carshalton. Crowd just shy of 500..
