Worst case scenario you can get the incredibly slow train to Crewe and change.
Leave London 08:46, arrive in Liverpool 12:43, leave 19:13 arrive back in London 23:04. No advance booking needed.
4 hours each way is still quicker than Burnley.....

Unfair comment, Liverpool is a nice city. Yes it might have some issues but where doesn't! I think there is a GPG thread about problems around Lionel Road games this season so we can't really judge issues around other stadiums; that's if there is even issues around Anfield or Liverpool

Last time I went to stay in Liverpool (an August Bank Holiday weekend) I found the Malmaison was cheaper than the budget chain hotels centrally.

Why not just take the train all the way as you’ll be driving pretty much the same route anyway if you’re in heavy woollen country?

European capital of culture, after all.
On a trip for Tranmere away a few years ago (more than few years ago actually) I had a walk around the Albert Dock before hitting the pubs. The Tate Liverpool and the Museum are both free entry and interesting. The Beatles Story on the other hand is £17.

liverpool is a great weekend away place now.....did it a few years ago and fantastic for pubs, restaurants, places to see etc etc.....even the re done lime st station is pretty decent compared with the first time i went there in 85 and went in the yankee bar across the road.....now that place was lively.....just about survived it !!! lol

I have a friend who lives in Liverpool and the place is much more modern now with some good restaurants and St John's shopping centre is just over the road from the station and the city centre has all the big named shops you would see in most major cities. As already stated Albert Dock is a good place to visit and yes, there are some places you would not want to go to, but that is the same in any city.

First time I was was shown around the city by a Liverpool supporting mate was in the late 70s early 80s. Besides a trip to Anfield the only other tourist attraction I remember was what he called "the only statue of Queen Victoria with a willy".

You have to stand at the right spot to get the illusion.
Nowadays there is probably a queue of tourists taking instagrams.

The mail seemed clear that 15th Jan is on sale. Brentford ticket office in charge of comms for Avanti west coast it seems.

Edit, National Rail Enquiries says engineering works between Euston and MK/Northampton on 15/01 will see a reduced number of services heading north.
