Being trying to get my head round this all day but I reckon it will take a mathematical genius to come up with the answer. Or that I'm a bit of a thicky, one or the other. The question is this.

Before the season starts, what is the maximum amount of points a team can achieve, yet still be relegated from the Championship? A pint next time I'm up for anyone who can solve it. No trick answers (points deductions etc.) :sorted:

69 from a 46 game season.

Every side wins 23 games and you go down on goal difference. No games drawn.

69 is occasionally enough to make the play-offs.

That wrong. Why give the other two relegated teams points. So it's higher
points

Yup. I've answered the highest number of points to finish bottom.

Assume the bottom three end with no points, I think that makes the answer 87. You'd be hoping for automatic promotion with that!

Third time lucky.

Everybody else beats the bottom three twice = 18 points each.

Against the other 20 teams each side wins one and loses one = 60 points.

So the answer is 78 points. I think. Hopefully!

But the bottom three go down so you'd be safe. Question is, maximum points but still go down? :suspect:

Oh I'm not used to this namby pamby Championship stuff with only three going down.

Everybody beats the bottom two = 12 points each.

Everybody wins 21 of the other 42 games = 63 points.

Top 22 in the league have 75 points. Bottom two have no points.

I have a question:

What is the maximum amount of guesses opinions5u can have before getting the right answer?

I think this is it. Well done. I lied about the pint, but well done. Pretty sure this is right. :sorted:

The answer is right, I'm fairly sure.

The bottom two will have whatever points they take off each other though. They can't both have zero.

I'd said the maximum must be 75. Every team beats every team at home but the bottom 2 teams don't win at all (or at least beat each other or even draw). But the bottom two also lose all their away games and therefore each from 1st to 22nd gain 6 more 'away' points. 69 (home points) plus 6 (away) = 75

Whatever. I for one won't relax until we have 76 points on the board. :pop
