Where the f*(k do the reporters get their info from, Cox to replace Fernandez for Man U game, no mention of Covid, but just that Fernandez has only kept one clean sheet in 9 games, utter b”’ocks lazy reporting in my opinion. Do you really think Thomas would make that change!!!

'Highly rated' and 'ready for Premier League action' aren't the same thing...I would be nervous if an 18 year old with zero professional appearances played in goal against Ronaldo...

I don't mean to sound too cynical, but I don't think it would be absolutely fine if he played.
Don't worry. He'd not be playing one on one against Ronaldo alone. There are all the other United deadlegs involved too. Anyway, he was coached by Ashley Bayes, so what could possibly go wrong? In other news, United have developed Brentford Flu.

I well recall Ashley's league debut! The less said the better... I also recall refereeing him in the conference south many years later where he didn't put a foot wrong...that day

If the rumours on the Man U game thread have any substance…namely that Alvaro is rumoured to have Covid, that as we have used all 25 squad places we cannot sign a keeper…and as we have a squad keeper available, we cannot get an emergency loan…

might be a case of 2+2 = 5. But might not be…

Not sure that's right as Southampton managed to sign Caballero on a one month deal as they were 2 keepers down and still had their Cox equivalent on the bench

Southampton had a space available in their 25 man squad.

Was that when he rushed out of his goal to kick a clearance, only to miss the ball compleatly ? The 'face-saving story' being that the ball bobbled just before he was about to kick it !

The Daily Mail 🤣

If it's true then whomever is leaking from the TG that Pinnock and, now, our keeper have Covid deserves a kick in the b***ocks,
Didn't say alvaro had covid said he has impressed thomas and the coaching staff and was picked on merit. What is wrong with him playing Illan meslier made his leeds debut at 19 against arsenal.

That’s exactly how I remember it…except the ‘bobble’. I think he just misjudged the bounce and as a well known cricket commentator once might have said, ‘he couldn’t quite get his leg over’

Why are so many people ageist?

Sachin Tedulkar was good enough for India aged 17.

Michael Owen was good enough for England at 18.

If you're good enough you're old enough.

It's a weird English thing IMO

Here’s what I believe:

- We wouldn’t choose to play Cox in the Premier League purely on merit at this stage if we could avoid it. If all is true about Alvaro, then hopefully we are asking for special dispensation to allow Gunnarsson or AN Other to play.

- That is no criticism of Cox who has got excellent potential and no doubt we think he can reach the required level one day.

- Despite the points above, I reckon we would rather have played United with Cox in goal than postpone the fixture purely on the basis that he would be in the team. Fair play to us if so. That seems to be the implication of the reports in the press that seem to have got a little bit lost in translation.

Dont think its about age its the fact he was bought to be 4th choice keeper and has never played a professional game?

I think you can, with 100% confidence, file that under 100% bullshit.

Can we create an enhanced category of ‘bullshit with bells on’ to be reserved for comments only of the utmost inanity?

We paid good money for him.
We obviously rate him.
What's not to like?

Could be the next Gordon Banks or the next Ashley Bayes.

Only one way to find out and just because he's a kid I don't understand why people are panicking

Because he was never meant to get near the first team this season.

I dont want a guy who didnt even get a start for Wimbledon in goal in a top flight match.

I think he should have played today's B team game just in case he is needed. When was the last game he played?
A couple of behind closed doors friendlies in the last two weeks

Whatever our various views, the guys at the top went into the period after the last transfer window closed, knowing that an injury to either of our first two keepers would put Matty Cox on the bench and that from there you are one red card, injury, bug or virus away from him playing in the premier league. They were comfortable with this possibility. Will he be accomplished as Raya or Alvaro? Is Charlie Goode as good as Ajer or Pinnock? Of course the answer is no...that's why he is #3 and not #1. However, if he plays for us on Saturday, I for one will be all in backing him. It will be wonderful to see him make his premier league debut and one thing we all know, is that he will do the job to the best of his ability (which is clearly already high)! So we will win, draw or lose as a team on Saturday and lets make him feel our support from the very first moment

This.

And if he fumbles an early cross or or even lets in a soft goal, I hope the usual suspects will remember that he’s only 18, probably a decade away from his peak and conclude that slagging him off probably won’t help his development.

I don't want a guy who struggled to get a game at Bochum playing. I want the fantastic defensive midfielder our club has developed whether it be as a defensive midfielder or a left centre back. Also, I don't want the youth that never played for AFC Wimbledon playing. I want to see the outstanding young man who is now the England Under 19 keeper that our club has been developing and who has by all accounts come on in leaps and bounds.

And above all, I don't want to hear you behind me at St Mary's if Cox does anything that doesn't work out well. I want to hear his name sung. I wan't to be part of that crowd that celebrates his league debut and helps him put the first building block in place towards a top career in the game.

He's in the squad. There's no alternative. Time to relax☺. I remember watching a teenage Pat Jennings playing for Watford against us in the early 60s.
Ridiculous suggestion. Jennings would be around 95 now and unable to kick very far.

Stick with Coxy if we have to.

Smiff Rant over.

Seems it was thomas who was going to drop him not me, but im not his biggest fan as he doesn't comes of his line for crosses and if he tries to catch or punch he just flaps.
Thomas was never going to drop him. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Also, he's clearly not the best at claiming crosses in a crowded area, but how can you be sure a younger, less experienced and potentially a more nervous keeper in Cox (that's never played a competitive game at club level) will be? If we were going to drop him, it would've been after the Burnley/Stoke/Norwich games where he was really poor. Improved a great deal since then and with more games brings more confidence. If Alvaro has covid, then we'll all get behind Cox, but I can imagine it'll only take a few misplaced passes or a cross he doesn't deal with for the moaners to be straight on here with something to say

Remarkable that opposing keeper well old enough to be his father!! 22 years difference in age!

Lots of teams sign emergency cover if this type of scenario arises ..assuming AF is injured

This has been covered elsewhere. We are not eligible to apply. We have a senior keeper available. Anyone in the 25 man squad is 'senior'. Southampton signed a free agent and had a space unused in their 25 man squad which he now fills. We don't.
