Was extremely cold last night but well done to the B team. Tricky to call whether it's a good run out gir them. The coach was demanding the same standards right through to the end. Broad fields also contained a number of young players so perhaps yesterday wasn't the greatest test. In the past e.g. Hendon, Wingate, Wealdstone, Fisher they came up against teams containing men which gave a different challenge and were probably more worthwhile.
The B team analysts ask for the average age of the opposition and factor that into their performance data. When they played the Fish our average age wasn't a lot lower than the Bees and was inflated by two older players. They took all the individual ages so I'd imagine broke it down defence, midfield attack etc and individual player one v ones.

The B team is about playing teams in different environments and against varying levels of opponents. It more about preparation and performance rather than the result. Last night's performance came off the back of two defeats while in Cyprus. A cup competition also adds a more competitive edge.
Also throws up some added value in playing under lights which a 1.00 kick off v Chelsea u23 at Cobham doesn't, tricky pitches (not all the squad will go on premiership careers and play on carpets every week) and in some of the cases a reasonable crowd. I know the players quite enjoyed the noise of the cowd at the Fish and again testing the character of a forward getting a bit of stick after a miss doesnt happen on u23 training ground games.

We may as well give up now as what chance have we of winning the Premier League.
What has that got to do with the notion that the B team game was a pointless run out? Or a very one sided League cup game?

The B team need game time, they are getting game time in this cup competition and they managed to scrape through to the next round. What’s not to like? Hanwell Town will be a sterner test, so no more than 6-0!

COVID. COVID. COVID.

The protocols make it really expensive to play other teams at their training ground.

You don’t have to worry at all, leave it to the experts.
Yet most U23 games continue to be played at training grounds this season…..

Im not disputing that the BTeam has been great for us; however feels like we are in a bit of a rut at the moment especially given that we are looking to try and bring through 2 or 3 players into first team squad contention…. I’m just questioning the strength of the opposition and I don’t think it’s entirely covid related given that many U23 league games are played at training grounds or non league grounds.

I guess if we shut down all conversations on here with “leave it to the experts” we wouldn’t have many threads….

The so-called “rut” has been caused by our promotion. A lot of those players are simply there to make up the numbers. There are one or two in there that might be on the fringes but we’re rubbing up against Liverpool and Arsenal now, not Luton. The club is in a completely different position to five years ago when the Academy was ripped up.

We may even re-enter the academy system - Benham and SmartOdds grew just as weary from the academy staff’s bullshit as they did with player compensation.

The opposition has been an issue due to covid. We’ve been abroad for the first time in nearly two years so the games programme has been a problem.

We've played Chelsea and Crystal Palace U23s this season and have just been out on tour where we played some v strong men's sides in Cyprus. I don't see we're in a 'rut' by any stretch? The B team goes through this sort of phase fairly regularly and particularly given our progression in the leagues. Expectations for first team places are quite different now but we still have 2 or 3 B teamers regularly training with the first team and even on the bench. Looking at the current B team, you've got Oyegoke, NYC and Brook who all look good prospects. Yes, there's a fair few in there who are unlikely to make it but as rebus said the bar has got a lot higher all of a sudden. The new work permit rules certainly won't have helped as we've had to look more locally for talent when half the reason for setting up the B team was that the big clubs were hoovering up all the young talent.
