It's frustrating, because I think we're talking £30-£40,000 needed. Peanuts in football terms. But unless anyone has a boss with a few bob (or is a boss with a few bob) that fancies owning a Speedway Club (by Tuesday), it looks like the end for the Islanders.

Very interesting meeting last night. I'm not a shareholder but was allowed to attend as a supporter and it gave me a real insight in to the set up.

Isle of Wight Speedway have a 40 year lease on Smallbrook Stadium. As well as the Speedway, the stadium (and therefore the company) hosts lots of other things. There are 5-a-side pitches, Cricket, a gym, function room etc. and lots of festivals are held there throughout the year including the Scooter Weekend. Overall the company makes a profit, but this gets swallowed up by the losses on the Speedway.

The above press release doesn't tell the whole story of last night. What it doesn't say is that the shareholders had already voted to suspend Speedway for a minimum of three years while the company builds up funds to run it again (a smokescreen in my opinion - I don't think it would ever return). It wasn't until after this vote that somebody stepped forward with the name of somebody who wanted to take it over. And so the actual situation is, no Speedway for at least three years - unless this chap steps forward. Even if that were to happen it will be a very weak team next year - all the talent has already been snapped up.

To add to these problems is the sponsorship deal with Wightlink. Wightlink supply X amount of free crossings for riders and officials each year. They themselves are reported to be in financial trouble and are cutting back. The amount of crossings offered for next year will only cover ten home meetings. Enough for the league (nine) but it would mean sitting out of the cups and cutting down from every Tuesday late March to October, to just ten meetings throughout the year. Then again, with a wealthy sugardaddy who it was also said would buy an airfence outright .............

I'd be amazed if anything comes of it - surely if someone was that keen he'd have made himself known before last night? But it either gives us a little hope or prolongs the agony - we shall see. But, sadly, my opinion is that barring a miracle, Speedway here is a thing of the past. :(

bit extreme...
Hurtful too . Never met Hullbee to my knowledge but it strikes me that he may be a little unstable. His lack of reply is a worry to me - I do hope he hasn't done anything stupid as a result of this.

Well, it prolonged the agony. But not for long.

Gutted. Fully expected this would happen, but still gutted. The point this article misses is that the shareholders had already voted to "suspend" Speedway for a minimum of three years (not maximum as it states) and it was only then that somebody stepped forward with the name (he wasn't 'un-named) of somebody who wanted to put the money in and take over at Smallbrook.

The decision was to defer the outcome of this vote until 21st January, to allow time for talks with this man. It took just a couple of days to announce that talks with the island's Matthew Benham had proved fruitless.

There is no vote to take on 21st January - it's already been done. Barring the miracle of somebody appearing out of nowhere with about 30-40K and fast, it's all over for the Islanders. :(

BUMP.

Sorry, but you gotta try ain't ya? 21 days and counting. Club dies on 21st January if the sugardaddy (who must be out there) doesn't make himself known. :(

Smallbrook will remain exactly as it is, minus the Speedway. Isle of Wight Speedway Ltd run the whole place on a 40 year lease. There's the Table Tennis Centre, Gym, 5-a-side thingy, Scooter Weekend, festivals and all sorts of other bits and bobs going on. That side of it is making money and the company are talking about "freezing the Speedway licence for three years to see if the financial climate improves". That is director talk for "Speedway has finished".

That said, the Scooter Rally people are making unrealistic demands for next year. They want lots of stuff that can't be provided including a percentage of the bar takings which I can assure you they ain't going to be getting. There is talk of them moving it to Hayling Island - so that could be gone too - watch this space!

In the meantime, the only thing that will save the Speedway Club is if somebody steps forward with £30/£40 grand before 21st January who wants to take over the running of the Speedway side. It would have to be a benefactor rather than an investor (unless he was a genius) so it's highly unlikely . Although I've always thought "Mathew Benham's Island Allstars" is a great name for a Speedway Club? :suspect:

I've been staying there since the 80s.

Went the hotel route one year but it wasn't the same.

Quite honestly if VFM did move it to Hayling Island I wouldn't be too bothered.

The price of the ferry crossing is a joke.

If they want a cut of the bar, just stick the bar prices up.
Cogito ergo sum.

And not a very funny one. Ferry companies are killing the island and yet Wightlink are reportedly squillions in debt. They already stated that they were cutting their Speedway sponsorship, which has consisted of X amount of free crossings for riders/officials etc. What they have offered for 2014 would only be enough to cover 10 meetings, so even if the directors had decided to go ahead, that would only have been enough to cover the league (9 meetings and the annual playoff defeat against Dudley). The cup competitons would be out of the question so the 'every Tuesday' thing would have gone out of the window.

Were you at the Esplanade, Ryde last night vcmazz?
Indeed mate. Brilliant night! Looks really positive. New guys behind it seem to have great backing and it looks like we're back in the National League next year and aiming for Premier 2017. Hoping to get air fence and licence reinstated in time for six 'friendlies' this year. They are also planning a school to try and bring through island based riders which Mazz Junior is going to join. Never thought I'd see it back, but looking good now. :bound:
