No longer my beloved NAM
He'd have had to go on to the next exit and double back to do that. That would just have been stupid.

Not necessarily. There are some service stations that are on both sides at the same time with a walk away across the top

I’m not sure I have anything to add.

I did once see the members of Ocean Colour Scene at Sandbach Services en route to Stockport away in 2005. We won 2-1 and Sam Sodje (I think) scored the winner.

That aside, my services experiences have been largely forgettable.

Had a great lunch at a garden centre cafe off the A43 before joining the M1 at Northampton driving up Friday. Had fish and chips on North Shields fish quay tonight (with tea, no Bovril) might go home soon but the locals in the sports bar are very entertaining.

I can not believe any motorway service station does not sell Moroccan Tomato and Chickpea pie

Never leave a tip in a motorway service station. It’s bad enough having to stop there in the first place….

Turn north on A5 at the Towcester roundabout and it’s immediately on the right. It gets busy, so need to allow time but food’s good, breakfast up to 11:30 (I think), too.

Not what I’ve being told, the bars are state of the art with the perfect pint served upwards ultra quick. Also told you have lots of choice with all sorts of food available at a price.

Tip? Tibshelf? Yeah, that’s a particularly grotty one. On the M1 Donington Park is probably the nicest. Or the unsignposted one at the Bolsover exit where I think there’s even a pub.

The only A1(M) services I’ve used are at Washington and also bad but if going to/from Newcastle you’d need to be a loony to stop there so close to the city.

I’d be careful what size bag you bring it in otherwise your dinner won’t get into the stadium.

One of the most interesting service stations I've visited is Gloucester services on the M5. A very Eco style place built into the side of a hill. All very organic in the food outlets. No doubt frequented by Forrest Green Rovers fans.

Games gone - that looks far too nice.

When I was a kid, give me one of these any day. Greasy sausage, beans and chips and back on the road.

When on the road, for many sakes (ie risk, taste, smell, aftershocks, pants) i have found it best to stick to established brands, even McDonalds

On way to Whitby few weeks ago I stopped on the M1 ones just north of Northampton and the Costas were out of breakfast food (this was at around 8am). But my 2nd pit stop stopped at big out of town shopping park on the east of York. Wife and daughter went to Primark, my dog and I went into Starbucks who happily allow dogs.
That night we were overnighting at Scotch Corner. The motorway services the Travelodge was about 50% dearer but had all the food outlets than the old one that used to be on the A1 but was clean, nice and quiet which was what I needed after very long day

Coming back from Cardiff, having lost to Stoke, I had the misfortune to espy Ron Noades in the Services near Swindon. I gave him a wide berth.

Tebay in the Lake District is the best services. But we've not played Carlisle for a long while.
It is very nice ( but gets very busy) . One like that down the M5 I think.

I've only ever been to one service station I would call even vaguely "interesting", and that's not even in this country.

One holiday we were driving through the Little Karoo desert in S.Africa when we came across "Jimmy's Sex Shop" in the absolute middle of nowhere - nothing but sand and scrub for a hundered miles in any direction.

We had to stop. Turns out it was a bloody great bar, with a shop attached which sold food, petrol, farm supplies and a bit of everything - except sex.

Why the name? Apparently Jimmy had gone on holiday one year leaving a couple of mates to run the shop and for a laugh, they repainted the big sign out front in four foot high lertters. Thing is, it's now become a tourist attraction, drawing extra visitors from all over, so it did him a huge favour.

An interesting motorway service area is the one at Bresse in France. Bresse is known for its chickens and loads of people were buying them (about €20 a go so pretty posh). The chicken and chips in the restaurant was extremely good.

There is a soft play at Rugby services. Key fact for parents of small kids.
