“Are you going to football tomorrow? She asked.
“Yes.” I replied, needing no further invitation.
Now, where to go? = Sutton, would be my 95th League Ground..
Saturday 9 October 2021
League 2
Sutton Utd 4-3 Port Vale. Att. 3905.
(SU finding their feet at home, and PV on a run of 6 consecutive wins)
Admission £13 (old git’s concession - printed at home)
Programme £3. Catering/refreshments- N/A. Never saw any, and everyone around me seemed to have brought their own. Massive queue for the toilets though.
New pitch looked great, complete with pop-up sprinklers. I gather the away seats are new this season too, a grandiose gazebo for about 100 souls. Not out of place amongst the mish-mash of small stands, and bits of covered terracing. PV end looked pretty much fully sold out, and they were in good voice throughout.
The site is circular, and gives the impression of having had a running track or, (perhaps less likely) greyhounds around the pitch in the past.
A lovely sunny autumn afternoon, and I positioned myself by a corner flag,
letting the crowd mass behind me.
A thoroughly entertaining game, and PV have a classy squad for L2, and on this viewing have a chance for promotion. SU have heart, some skills, and stickability. Despite trailing 0-2 and 2-3 they managed to win at the death, having led for couple of minutes in total!
Surprised to see it was the lead game on Quest’s highlights, with Colin Murray and Dean Ashton on site. Sure enough, there I am on the telly again..
My lifelong aim of mediocrity and anonymity is being sorely tested this season.
