A weird formation for the first 40 minutes, I'm not sure Sam Saunders knew himself where he was supposed to be playing!! Once Weston went up front things got slightly better.

The bonus from the evening was the performance of Leon legge. I watched him in the reserve game last week against Aldershot and thought he was a million miles away from first team action but his performance tonight was very impressive. He is certainly a more-than-useful presence to defend corners, etc - I don't think he failed to win a header from a set-piece all evening. Mention also needs to be made of Karleigh Osborne's display alongside him. I think we have a strong central defence with those two as fourth and fifth choices!

The downside was the woeful performance of Steve Kabba up-front. I fear that his brief cameo performances in the league matches have flattered to deceive - he was abysmal tonight, even allowing for the fact that he spent far too much time trying to collect long hopeful punts forward. I'll be astonished if he manages a solitary goal before Christmas - amazing that Scott gave him a one-year contract.

...and off the pitch, what was all that nonsense beforehand about not having any tickets until they arrived with the supporters coach. What club sends all the tickets to the visiting team and are left with nothing to issue on the night? Norwich might have been a premiership club once - but their ticketing arrangements are non-league at best. A total shambles.

...................they played like t(w)urps.................

am I the first one home?

Price was decent in goal, unlucky that the ball went in off the post, but his distribution left a lot to be desired, not just his kicking
O'Connor looked as if he hadn't played right back in years
Osborne didn't really put a foot wrong
Legge was my MOM, won most if not all his headers, and if he had managed to stretch his Legge just a little further, might have equalised
Foster looked out of position, although he didn't do much wrong
Bean didn't really know what his position was, got himself booked for a blatant handball trying to score - he should have used his head, both literally and figuratively
Saunders ran around and was the most hard-working of the attacking force, and he was the one substituted!?
Hunt was simply ineffective, distribution and throw-ins didn't achieve anything, nor did they ever look like doing so
Taylor, Kabba and Weston - were they all trying to take on Marvin Williams mantle? - they all ran around like headless chickens, getting in each others way, and in all honesty we wouldn't have scored in a month of Sundays with those three up top
Wood came on with a minute to go, plus stoppage - nowhere near enough time for him to make an impression either favourable or not

The game appeared to have been approached by BFC as a training-ground exercise - if any of them were playing to win a contract, I'm afraid that most of them would have been cast aside - Norwich weren't much better, but they were the more cohesive unit

I wasn't sure whether Brentford had named any substitutes - both times before the game began the teams were read out, each time the Norwich team included their subs bench, but neither time were Brentford's subs named - it was quite a surprise when Wood came on

The tactics were the most shocking - hit high and hope was how I'd best sum them up, and we never stood a chance of winning any high balls in attack against a very robust Norwich defence - who was supposed to be the target man?

All in all very disappointing

Edit: Forgot to mention - the linesman on our side of the pitch, with the yellow flag - didn't make a decision until after the referee had decided which team won the throw-in, conceded the foul etc - reminded me of the Lowestoft linesman we had a few years ago (League Cup?) at Norwich, who gave up officiating after our defeat that evening - he also missed a questionable handball in the area by Norwich, and didn't give us a corner when the ball was clearly out of play; in fact he gave us nothing all evening

Just got home... Very dissapointed in the performance by the lads, apparently according to official bees website we played 4-3-3 was more like 4-4-1-1. Just wasnt good enought tonight. Playing punt ball all night
Shame as the fans make the effort I wouldnt mind travelling all that way on a tuesday night for a crap mickey mouse cup if the players put in 100% effort and commitment but they didnt not one bees player i can say had a good game.
Only positive was Legge and Osborne performances, Hunt had a awful game!!
Fans deserve better. If i knew we were going to just play punt ball and put no effort in i wouldnt of made the trip.

Total over stewarding at the game as well, far too many stewards there! And feel when we take a big following in the league in Jan they are going to ruin it for the bees fans.

Looks like I'm first into work the next morning....

Well, we started with what looked like a 433 for tens mins, went 442, then 4411 (with Saunders playing behind Kabba)...

For 25 mins we were totally over run by the Canaries and in midfield we barely touched the ball, Stephen Hughes was running the game and it looked just a matter of time before the scored. When they eventually did was, ironically, at a time we came more into the game.

KOC had hit a woefully short back pass that Martin should have scored from and Price nearly allowed a Norwich defender to chip the ball into an empty net after a dreadful clearance, only Karleigh saving his blushes.

Kabba missed a good chance on 40 mins when Taylor fizzed it across but he put it over an empty goal from 4 yards out :(

Apart from a slow first 15 and a tired last 15 Bean had a good game, got involved and forward and Hunt played some excellent passes - I fear he is getting the brunt of fans wrath for the throws but theres a lot more to this guy than meets the eye.

Legge & Karleigh were very good. We gave Beesplayer MOM to Karleigh but Legge did everything well too.

What worries me is up front. Taylor looked poor throughout and gets knocked off the ball easily. Weston looks half the player that started the season  and gets brushed aside from any 50/50 challenge. I'm not sure he can play up front until he builds some upper body strength but he didn't create anything last night on the wing at all. He does track back well and is tireless in effort. We know the lad can play but he has had a few poor games on the bounce now.

Saunders made some good runs from the wings and put in better crosses but Norwich dealt with most of it, though Bean should have scored from a corner.

Any critics of Cort's should have seen last nights game to see the alternative. Kabba didn't hold the ball up at all until later in the game. We don't look like scoring though which is obviously a big worry.

Defence looks pretty solid. Can't see us really being turned over at the moment but we wont get a bigger test all season over two consecutive games than Charlton & Huddersfield away.

Not quite as enthusiastic as I was after Carlisle & Brizzle performances...we have lots of players to come back and the James Wilson news yesterday was terrific...along with Turner cash....feel we need a goalscorer pretty lively though

Poor for the first 35 - 40 minutes untill the switch was made and Weston went up top and Saunders going wide left.
Dont know why AS put Woody on wiht 2 minutes to go and no other subs used.
Kabba was dissapointing, as were Hunt and Kevin at fault a couple of times.
Foster had a great game at left back.
Bean played ok for his first game back and came close with a "flick" header from corner.
Would say Norwich deserved the win but we were unlucky.
Special credit to Legge and Osborne who i thought played excellent.
Their fans think were mugs who dont sing bla bla lets wait till the league game.
Stick your Jerry Springer up your arse !!

According to BBC our possession share was 28% !!! - lets hope that trial is never repeated and we revert to a more structured passing game against Charlton and Huddersfield ..

We started with a changed back four of Kev, Karleigh, Leon and Foster. Inevitably they struggled to get it together and for the first twenty minutes we were under the cosh.

After that we matched Norwich but did not have any bite up front. Kabba showed that he and Cort each need a 'proper' forward to play alongside them and not a converted winger.

Bean showed he is well on the way back to match fitness and Foster showed his class again.

I wish the Karleigh detractors were there to see his MOM performance as well as Legge's outstanding game - no doubt helped by Karleigh's talking throughout. Maric (?) their main striker did not win a header all evening which I think is testament to our centre backs.

Credit to the Bees fans who went all that way for a Mickey Mouse cup and had to wait until 1/2 hour before KO to get in due to a ticket fiasco.

A disgrace that Norwich for not having the courtesy to announce our substitutes.

Very quiet crowd and difficult to believe that 12,500 people could be so silent despite winning.

Do you think it's a disgrace that we never announce who scores for the away team at GP? :fishing:

Yes! I've been saying that for years!

But then I suppose it wouldn't fit with the "only announce good news" policy?!

The only real positive was Legge who was excellent. We played poorly to begin with but got into the game. We'll have to step up a gear on Saturday.

As said above, the big positive from last night was the performance of the two centre backs, and Karleigh really helped Leon through the game. Leon was huge in defence and they were both a credit to the club. The high balls sent up front all evening didn't give Kabba a chance as their centre back put his head on everything, and I feel the criticism of Kabba is slightly harsh given the poor quality of service he was given. Bean got better and better as the game went on and was very unlucky to see a great header from a corner saved brilliantly by their keeper. He is now challenging for a place on saturday and with Wood & Foster restored to their normal positions, Kevin can also return to midfield. He was very uncomfortable at right back for the first half hour. Overall, too many players were out of position as injuries and an eye on the league matches to come dictated team selection to a large extent. I would disagree that they lacked effort, but they just didn't gel as a unit. Norwich, given all this, didn't look great and Price wasn't called upon to do much on a disappointing night in the sticks.

And if you made it league only no losses either.

A creditable, in my opinion, draw at Southampton and a home draw which a sublime piece of skill could and maybe should have been a home win

Clearly they have no brains at all:sorted:

Injuries and the '6 first teamers' rule meant for an unusual formation. We are short of bodies because we haven't much money - Norwich have lots of money and players coming back who want to impress Lambert.

We were overrun for 20 minutes early on but were the better team in the second half.

Wood couldn't be risked otherwise no left back on Saturday.

Legge and Karleigh were great second half.

Taylor, Saunders and Weston are skillfull players who tried hard but our best threat in the box was Bean rather than Kabba which is a bit of a worry - he'll be fine once he's scored a couple.

We can't afford too many mistakes against Charlton, that's for sure - at the moment we're difficult to beat but don't look like taking chances up the other end.

To repeat: injuries to Dickson, Bennett, Strevens, Bean, Macdonald and now Phillips mean influential players are/have been missing. (It's a shame Blake is injured as he looked good pre-season as cover for Dickson).

We are playing clubs with bigger budgets - our personnel at the moment is a) inexperienced players at this level mixed with b) two lads who are trying to resurrect their careers - signed as emergency cover as, remember, we have a minor injury crisis.

Therefore last night was pretty good considering. If we can harness the skill of Weston and Saunders, get Charlie and Strevens scoring we'll be all right.

Patience, please. Let's settle in.

:imwith:

In the end I went not expecting much. First half was disappointing, but we improved second half. With a makeshift back 4 (players and positions), key positions (centre midfield and front man) changed from the usual and bean not match fit. The right side players on the left and an unfamiliar right sided duo, it wasn't terrible.
If we'd put in that performance with the REAL first team in preferred positions I would have been concerned, but as it is let's be realistic.

I couldn't believe how poorly we played in the first 20 minutes or so. Aimless hoofing the ball up in the air when we did have it caused so many problems. We appeared to have weathered the storm when they scored from something of nothing - no one closed down in front of the defence and he had a free shot. After that it was pretty much all us. I don't know how the BBC gave them 72% possession - must have been watching a different game. Thought Kabba should have scored when he hit the side netting but overall Norwich were worth their half time lead. Second half, only one team in it but rarely looked like scoring. Still too much hoof ball up towards the 'towering' Kabba! How was he expected to get into the game? When we kept it on the deck, we looked like we could have destroyed them. We did look dangerous from corners and their keepers save from Bean was outstanding. Wasn't that impressed with Taylor - looked too one dimensional - but tried hard. Osborne and Legge were outstanding. Considering so many players out of position, in retrospect it wasn't such an awful performance - Norwich weren't any great shakes and with a little more luck, we could have beaten them.
Think Kabba needs to play with a proper striker. He may feed well off Cort in the short term but feel that Weston has to go and play his obviously preferred position out wide. Can't see too many goals coming the way things are at the moment.
Still it was only the Paint Pot Cup. Only problem is living around here, it's pretty hard to take. Looking at the local paper headlines, you'd think they'd just won the FA cup. TW**TS. You BEEEEEES!

Charlton, also have sent all the tickets to Brentford, so get there early!

I live near the Valley and enquired about buying an away ticket to avoid the crush, but all the tickets have been sent to Brentford so expect to miss the start of the match. Graet organisation.
