Now I'm sure I didn't dream this. I remember as a child, early to mid 70s, Paul Bence either scored a goal or hit the woodwork with a bullet of a shot (from a free kick I think) at the Ealing Road end and the goal came crashing down - holding up play for quite some time while Mr Piggott phoned for a carpenter.

I've been looking through my "Big Brentford Book Of The 70's" and gone through all the match reports but I can't find any reference to it. Does anyone else remember this event? When it was or who it was against?

Interesting, I don't remember anything like that. I do recall him hitting an absolute screamer into the Ealing Road net in a 4-3 defeat by Rotherham during a night game back in 1974.

He remembered it well himself when it was mentioned to him at the 70's book launch event. Hardly surprising he could recall it, he wasn't renowned for too many spectacular goals!!

One thing I do remember about Paul Bence is when he picked the ball up thinking it had gone out of play for a throw in only for the ref to give a free kick the other way for hand ball.

I hardly missed a home game in that period, and I don't remember it. I do remember an opponent (Barnsley?) treating Bence as the ball and putting the boot in like it was as fight outside a pub

Whether or not its the same incident I have vague memories of a goal having to be repaired during a game in possibly the 70s possibly against Mansfield? I don't think we had to wait whilst a carpenter was called, the club handyman did the repair sufficient to get the game restarted IIRC. However my mind might also bee playing tricks...!

Ah. At last someone might have finally shed some light on this :). I was joking about calling a chippy by the way, I do remember our handyman fixed the problem :sorted:.

Are you sure you are not confusing cartoons with Brentford Mazz? It's easily done.

I seem to remember a penalty taken at the Ealing Road (possibly Roger Cross) who smacked it so hard the crossbar snapped & had to be repaired. Or is that me spouting bollox ??

Mansfield Town (H) 3rd November 1973: Middlesex Chronicle (George Sands)

"In the 53rd minute Cross lobbed the ball over the 'keeper. From the stand it seemed to go over the bar but it dipped and went in off the far post. 'Keeper Arnold, falling backwards, thumped his head against a net stanchion and needed six minutes treatment, during which time an upright was also repaired."

It was at the Ealing Road, too. No mention of Bence, though!!

You have a fantastic memory hatfieldbee - and well done vcmazz!!

Perhaps my memory is a jumbled up fusion of the Paul Bence screamer against Rotherham, the occurence above, and a cartoon I once saw?

No I don't! Like anyone of a certain vintage I forget things I shouldn't and remember things I've no right to. 'Twas one of those things that rarely happens, and I would not have remembered it if Mazz hadn't raised this thread!

Was reading in the 70's book that the post and crossbar fell on Chic Brodie at an away game ( Doncaster ? ) . He wasn't exactly lucky poor old Chic, was he ?

for anyone who's never seen the dog/chic brodie incident, it's featured at 1.10 in this video for Half Man Half Biscuits' peerless 'Even Men With Steel Hearts (Love to see a Dog on the Pitch) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvwA7BK4-6A

16th September 1974 - if that shot had gone two yards higher it would kept going and taken out a 65 bus passing along Ealing Road!
