@AB, you are my go-to legal expert on here, but in this case why would there need to have been an option in place, if both parties had consensually agreed the benefit of an extension. It feels like the club were simply making it a more 2-way agreement, rather than forcing the position themselves. INNWT !?

The benefit of a unilateral option is it doesn’t need further agreement. In practice, holding a player against their will on the basis of a unilateral contract extension term might be counterproductive (if they eg decide just to put in minimum effort and nevertheless force a move). In that case the extra term just helps to recoup some money via a transfer fee but the player still goes. It doesn’t seem to be a BFC approach though- eg we could have insisted on it with Odubajo and probably have got something. But if both are happy to extend, it removes/reduces the opportunity for the player to seek to renegotiate the terms and get more money as a condition of extending. Though the club might still agree that if it wants to.

To be fair it doesn’t mean never. But it may be strained by the rumour strength ratings on a number of other players at the moment!

Also, there's no mention of us "taking up the option" as usually reported, just that he's signed a new contract. Easy assumption is that the "option" didn't include a pay rise, and this does, and there wasn't the further(/better) interest as expected by both parties.
Unless we're after a, what will be a fairly nominal, fee in the summer and PJ getting one last 'big' contract, he'll be going to Malmo end of next season.

Almost certain that we will look to improve this area in the summer with Zanka out of contract and an indication that PG/TF don't see this as an urgent issue that needs addressing in Jan. I don't think we will see PJ quite so often next season should we be in the PL - pretty sure we will be looking to strengthen with a younger model with pace.

Am I missing something, he had an option for another year, Nana told everyone that had been binned amicably by both parties and now he’s signed a new one.
I’d love Nana to get something wrong but can’t see what he has this time.

He’s been exposed at times this year with a lack of pace. No doubt.

For that reason, his injury record, and his age I expected him to move on this summer in a similar way to Dalsgaard last year.

In hindsight though I think both Henrik and the club probably regret that decision now and Pontus is an even more influential player. Now, with giving Pontus an extra year (even if it’s on fresh, juicier terms), we aren’t going to risk making the same mistake again.

Just hope it doesn’t block a move for another quality centre back, as I think we still need one.

Sometimes a player contributes more than just his playing skills. Pontus is a leader, a physical presence and an inluencer. Teams need that and we all know how we cried out for a leader in the past. Don't bin him unless we have someone else who can provide those qualities.

I like the guy and no doubt has great influence on those around him in the dressing room etc. But I'd like to see a bit more "leadership" when we're defending corners and other set pieces, rather than leave it to young replacment GK with no experience of the Prem. Our soft defending at set pieces is costing dear at the moment.

You cannot expect your centre back to do the keepers job for him. It's a totally different perspective on the game. This is the Premier League not Hackney Marshes you can't expect him to communicate for Alvaro. Pontus's wasn't responsible for any of the goals today, his defence was solid enough, his use of the ball was poor though.

One thing about our recent problems with corners. Last year Toney cleared absolutely everything. Some of the best coaches in the world will have spotted that and are making it much harder for him to do so. Add a keeper who doesn't command his box and we've got problems. We're also have to defend probably 3 times as many corners as last year.

Because he helped us get promoted and is our most experienced CB, who on his day is superb. Who do you expect us to sign, Joe Gomez or something?

Not been superb for a while now been a great player for us but not good enough at this level.
We don't want to keep playing 5 at the back just to accomdate Pontus's lack of pace.

We need to make 3-4 quality signings per year. The CB position is not a priority at all, so keeping our current ones (including Captain) makes sense for the time being.

18 more months of Jansson makes full sense. Hopefully when he does eventually move in our squad is at a much stronger point.

If we stay in the PL (or even if we don't) I expect the first 11 in three seasons time to feature only 2 or 3 of the current starters. As we did when we came up to the Championship we need to evolve and improve if we are to establish ourselves.
While we won't be buying £50m strikers we will need at least £10-15m players in every position.
