I think tonight may put paid to the new contract for Pontus argument.
He’s been fantastic for us and he’ll go to the Hall of Fame for sure but if we want to establish ourselves in the premier league and aim to compete in the top half we need better.

Think Pontus will do a similar thing to Dalsgaard, will probably go back to Sweden at the end of the season and finish his career at Malmo.

To be fair if want to establish top half you’ll be changing half the squad in next 3 windows

Probably. Although we have a lot of young players who should improve over the next 2-3 seasons as they reach their peak…Ajer, Norgaard, Mbeumo and others

He’s captain, so he won’t be dropped. And I think he will continue to serve us well for the rest of the season.

But you can feel the pendulum swinging towards Mads Bech since the latter returned. Think he could be a genuine successor.

He’s been good for us and will no doubt have influential games between now and the end of the season. But he’s not the future and he can’t play in a back 4 at this level.

We’re shipping plenty of goals and for me centre back is an area we need some major upgrades and investment.

If Bech is the answer then I’m not sure what the question is.

You don’t like him then?

I am sure we will sign another CB as well, because we won’t persist through next season with Goode, Jeanvier and Racic as our squad CBs.

He’s proved me wrong before and could do it again. I agree we need some surgery for next season.

As I said today on the match thread, if we want to play a high line you can't hide a player as slow and ponderous as Pontus

It was only a few games ago we were lauding him as Captain Fantastic, changed the game, gives us that something extra etc.. Is it possible that at his best he is all of that but when he and the wider team are not fully at the races, given how pivotal his role is, he can look a bit exposed?

Exactly. Team wins together and they lose together, as we often hear football types saying post match.

If we lost points because Ivan Toney missed a penalty(!) it doesn't mean he hasn't mostly been amazing for the team this season never mind last season.

Surely when the team are not fully at the races then that is when we need 'Captain Fantastic' to come to the fore?

It’s not the speed, it’s his concentration levels.
To be fair to him, during his interview with BFCTV he admitted that his concentration lapses at times. Although its a shame it keeps happening, makes it sound like its a known issue not being addressed.

I don't think it's any coincidence his best performances tend to come when we're deeper.

He's our captain and despite his troubles at times I believe we should keep him until the summer, but it's definitely time to be looking towards the future.

Personally I think you do him a disservice. His progression has been rapid over the last 12 months. Leaner, stronger and apparently quicker. I think you would have to spend a lot to get someone in right now who is significantly better and a small fortune to buy someone who is going to be better than he will be in 12 months time. I would trust him in the pivot role in the 3 if called upon.

I agree with most of that but we still need better and are shipping goals left right and centre right now.

Disappointed. We can do better.
I agree we can do better, but it gives us a year to phase him out and to bring someone else through. I think it would be unwise, both in terms of leadership and defensive experience, to lose him from the group going into our 2nd Premier League season (assuming we have one).

He's a similar player in our system to what John Egan was in Sheffield United's first season. And, despite his limitations as a footballer, his absence through injury destroyed them last season.

There’s merit in that but I think a clean break this summer would have suited both parties.

It's not necessarily binary though, is it? Keeps everything settled and calm now and if he gets a better/long term offer in the summer we presumably wouldn't stand in his way?

So why was the year option scrapped? Presumably a pay increase is involved. I have always found it difficult to tell Pontus's true value because as an individual his performances for us have been hit and miss. And he is forever going on about Leeds which is annoying lol. But we do seem to miss his leadership when he isn't there.

I hope we have a replacement in the summer and he is on the bench.

Good news overall. He's raised his level & for me over the season so far has been solid & a decent Captain. Worst game by a country mile against the Saints and yes will get skinned for pace & make the odd error but he's an integral part of the reason why we're here and in relatively comfortable mid table & an extra year makes sense as part of the evolution of hopefully a second season in the Premier League. Probably means we intend to play three centre backs for the foreseeable future I would imagine.

Can't see him staying beyond the end of this deal so I'd be looking to get a younger quicker model in the summer as first choice in the centre of the 3 CB's with PJ covering for injuries and suspensions - we need 6 CB's if we persist with 3-5-2 so I'd be fine with him as a fringe player for a season for his experience and professionalism in what is a relatively young squad.

I guess an extra year but without a guaranteed starting place is ok. Having his experience around will help but if the younger lads don’t play they’ll never improve.

Man gives a sh*t more than most I’ve seen in a Brentford shirt. A proper player you want on your team. Got us promoted, as captain. Even if we do sign another CB in the summer for first choice he will get plenty of games in cups/as bsck up if we keep 3 at the back.

Does everyone still think we need better 😂. Great news imo, an important player to have in and around the team. Our captain 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Of course we need better but I’m glad he’s signed for an extra year, we need better in many places other than CB too and a stay in this division will make that happen.

Really pleased with this signing.

PJ is a great Leader and will continue to serve us well.

Never thought we would cash in this January.

Still expect us to sign the rumoured Malmo defender and for them to share our position, so that they can rest, rotate and adapt to the Prem.

Good character to have around the club I think. Has cut out many of the silly errors of last couple of seasons and has generally been solid. Every player has a couple of bad games a season, Pontus has generally done what we need of him though.

I agree he may not be a first choice next season as, I hope, we find better (or move to a "Leeds like" back 4 with Norgaard playing the pivot role), but it wards off suitors that may have lured him away this window which could have holed us below the water.

Maybe that will still occur? We certainly need him to stay until the end of this season.

"Brentford Captain Pontus Jansson has signed a new contract. The imposing central defender put pen to paper on a new deal earlier today, Friday 14 January. The contract is a one-year extension and Pontus’ deal will now run until the end of the 2022/23 season."

Not even in the top 100 of giving a sh*t, let alone the last 20 years!
