Excellent news. Has proven me wrong this season and made that step up to the Premier League. It is no coincidence that he is the only player that played all league games for us this season. An excellent man to have around the dressing room (yes my mind of him has changed since Bournemouth away). Signing an extension doesn’t mean he will be first choice next season but for me at least relief we will still have a strong presence within the squad.

Whilst he's captain, he'll get picked regardless.

This is good news. His leadership is still there for all to see, and a one year deal just seems sensible. Upgrading our centre backs isn't our priority in the next window so continuity here will be good. Maybe we can blood in the replacement next season if someone is in the building.

He's largely been good this season, Southampton aside, and I think this just makes sense for all parties. Happy with this!

Well happy with this his leadership is worth the extra year alone, you can never have too many centre half’s in our system we play 3 of them and I think all 4/5 of our centre half’s have been injured at some point. Good news

Really? Henderson and Milner are captain and vice captain respectively at Liverpool and it wouldn’t be an odd team selection for neither to start when everyone is fit and available. If for instance next season we set up so that 2CBs is at least a possibility for some games would he always be one of the two starting CBs when all fit? Would TF really plan on the basis that whatever happens Pontus must always play when available?

I think we would make him club captain next year. But at the moment he is an automatic starter.

At the moment for sure and club captain would be completely fitting for him as he’s definitely been the club leader through his time whether playing or not.

I am absolutely ecstatic by this news. Pontus is a great leader and aside from one or two meh performances, I think he has been quite good this season.

Disappointed. We can do better. I’ve never understood the fuss over him. When we need him most he goes missing. Bring on your dislikes, inject it into my veins!
Maybe we can, and perhaps we have been trying, but the cost of replacing (with younger and better, NOT with just 'future' potential) is being seen as just too expensive. We have someone here now with little resale value, who can do a good job now. Granted, he has his faults, but someone with fewer faults and more pace will cost a lot more.

I think we've decided that if we are going to spend £25m on a couple of upgrades, we are going to do it in other positions.

EDIT - Sorry, I just realised I typed Brentford spending '£25 million' on a 'couple of players' without batting an eyelid. Wow!

Not even in the top 100 of giving a sh*t, let alone the last 20 years!
Did Pontus miss you off his Christmas Card list? Certainly gives a fair impression of caring about the club  . Actually "Rebus's Top 100 give a sh*t - players of the last 20 years" could be quite an interesting thread ;)

We needed him in the play offs last season and we have needed him to get 12 points off the bottom three and he has been there.
There’s merit in that but I think a clean break this summer would have suited both parties.
Clearly not as it seems to have suited both parties to sign a new contract.

How people can see this as a negative is beyond me. Our captain, that’s played every Prem game this season has signed on for another year, 🤯what’s not to like? It’s cost us no transfer fee to keep an experienced player with fantastic leadership skills. When we signed Zanka and Lossl everyone is chuffed to bits we’ve signed players with experience. 😳 Well we’ve just signed an even better one for the rest of this season and next.
Sure, there’s better CBs out there and we’ve probably signed one in Ajer, and may sign another before next season but let’s not underestimate what Pontus brings.

His comment in that interview that he loses his concentration is…. interesting. I’m just glad he ain’t a brain surgeon or airline pilot 😐……

Great news! The good thing about Pontus is he tends to have the occasional stinker (Burnley and Southampton this season) but is otherwise very dependable. Often overlooked when we think of MoM but he is the enabler that makes those around him better. I wasn't keen when it was rumoured we were in for him but he has paid back the investment in spades with his leadership and quality.

Has he never not been picked when he is fit
Don't know. But the fact that it's not happened in the past doesn't mean it won't happen in the future, And TF only seems to look ahead.......
Got no idea. But te fact td hat it's never happend before doesnl;t mean i never will in the future.

Signing a one year contract extension does not mean that he will not be transferred this coming summer.

He has more resale value now!
