First back...but not really a surprise!

Well....we won, but it wasn't convincing! They looked crap, really poor, but we didn't look very good either. Vale hooooooofed it quite a lot, and always tried to get it out wide to put a cross in, but although they won a lot in the air they didn't look like scoring. Think they'd had 2 home defeats in a row prior to this, so no surprise that none of them had hte confidence to shoot from 20 yards.

Bees didn't have too much possession but still had 3/4 efforts right across the goal line, one of which May should've scored from but hit it high over the bar. We always seem to have a lot that go right across the goal line when we play there!! Rankin held the ball up very well, looked very sharp today. May had a few nice touches and looks a hundred times better than last season. Dobbo played 90mins and looked solid, despite being against a tough winger who could do him for pace. Sodje looked good, but Nelson was MOM for some quality saves, including one from a chip in the last minute that looked as if it was impossible to save, and another from point blank range midway through the second half.

Strange game overall - we didn't look good, and they had lots of possession, but we probably had the best chances, yet our keeper was man of the match!!

One more thing - possibly the quietest home crowd I've ever seen.

3 clean sheets in a row

good day all round, nelson and sodje (except for one mistake early on the game) were superb. dobson looked a bit slow but should improve after a game or two more. excellent vocal support from the back of our stand. thought we could and should have finished them easily but as above, it was a strange sort of game.......!!!

Myers was limping when he came over at the end with the rest of the team to applaud the supporters - I guess he's crocked too! I doubt whether any player will volunteer to play L or R back from now on; they just get injured playing there.

Good battling result, Nelson definitely MOM. The 1-at-the-front, sometimes 3-at-the-front seems to work, with all three looking better and better.

A good battling away performance. Hutch scored a superb goal. Started with us winning possession in their half (Talbot), who played it wide to Dobbo. He hit it to the far post for May to knock down, eventually back to Hutch on the edge of the box to hit a low drive inside the post.
They are a side clearly low on confidence. They hit great crossess, corners, free kicks and throw-ins into our box all game but couldn't get a clear sight of goal due to some excellent defending. The second half started end-to-end with Rankin having a cross run aloong the goal line that needed just the mereset of touches - later on he hit the bar from about 20 yards.
As someone said on the coach "They may have had 60% possession but we've got 100% of the points". Come on you reds.

Thought it was a good team performance, everybody played steady with no one (Outfield) outstanding, but Stuart Nelson was superb, i know it's not the norm on this site but i think he's a bloody good goalie.

1st time to Vale's ground, couldn't beleive when the Bees fans stopped singing it was as quite as a morgue there, quietest set of fans i've ever (not) heard.

And how bad was that song they played at half time "Play up Play Up Port Vale", God it was awful.

But i do love going away and seeing the Super Bees win, brilliant day.

Well done bees, another 3 points.
The stadia was a shambles and empty as mentioned above, there was a half built stand which i was reliably informed has been half built for a few seasons but it doesnt make much difference if they finish it they have no fans to put there anyway! It was my first trip to Vale even though i am at uni just up the road and was very disapointed with the ground and the huge scoreboard hanging down in the away end was really annoying if the ball was booted high. It was obvious that Vale are the poor relations of Stoke City and incase u dont know there is nowhere actually called Port Vale.

The Game wasnt a footballing showcase but a battleing performance as all the above comments suggest but 3 points is 3 points and lets look forward to the next game.

Super Reds!!

Apparently they had a plan to turn it into the 'Wembley of the North' rofl rofl ****ing muppets!!

It sounds like the other away wins this season, we weren't brilliant but put the effort in and deserved the win. Onwards and upwards!

Hmm, not a fan of this pack the midfield with battlers and leave one up front approach to away games, but it seems to have worked in the last couple of games. I just feel we're so much better than that, we've sorted out a good solid defence, (there can't be much better duo than Sodje and Turner in this division) Nelson seems to have curbed some of his more wayward performances and we've got some great attacking players in the squad.. I reckon we'd be far better playing a bit more positive football away from home..

Who gives a f*ck about entertaining, attacking football away from home if we can get three points everytime on one counter attack so be it!!

I'll settle for showing the World our graceful footballing talent when we appear at Old Trafford in the 5th round!!

Hello from North Staffs.

Yes, Vale fans can seem to be quiet; it's because the ground is far too large for our needs and the stands are so far from the pitch. If you're sitting amongst the home fans it sounds loud but the noise doesn't carry. No doubt you thought you were loud, but the Vale fans hardly heard you. Not a criticism, it's just the way it is.

As to the match, I thought that Vale should have won it, but we were too wasteful of the chances we created. I thought Brentford were an organised outfit, but nothing special. Your keeper had a good game, and that geezer with the big hair on the left wing (sorry, don't know his name) looked good in the second half.

We normally beat you at VP but things have been bad of late so I wasn't that shocked at the defeat. We do have some decent players and we can put in good performances at times, just all too infrequently. Oh well, them's the breaks. Pity we didn't win (for me!) but best of luck for the rest of the season, even though you do play in red and white shirts.

Strange game, in a very strange stadium! As others say, very poor atmosphere in a large stadium. Not a great game but as noted above we did enough to win, taking a chance when it fell to us. We defended well, with Sodje and Nelson the best. Nelson's save in the final minute was indeed outstanding, but if he could kick properly he would not have had to make it...

Framps and Myers both picked up injuries in the supporters game last week. MA obviously took a chance on Myers, who went off at half time. Let's hope either is fit for next week although I think Salako can fill in if necessary. I believe Framps has a hamstring strain, not sure about Myers.

Nice to see Dobbo back, although not sure how long he'll keep his place. Obviously needs a few games but he does lack pace. Hit a few long balls/passes in true Dobbo style. Burton again worked hard as did the 3 "holding" players in midfield. Since Hutch came back Hargreaves seems to get forward a bit more.

Was I the only one who got lost getting out of that town? Bloomin one way system and lack of road signs!

I'm not saying we necessarily need to play more attractive football away from home, just that we could afford to be a little more positive which may mean picking up a few more points away from home than we have done so far this season..

Believe me I'm more than happy with a boring 1-0 away win but I reckon with our team we could do better..

Did anyone else notice Martin Allen in with the supporters before the game, whilst the players were warming up on the pitch?

Does anyone else find this alarming? I thought the supporters versus team idea was brilliant but if this is the result, let's not repeat it.

Rather than not repeat it, how about having it in the middle of the close season, so that any injury sustained can (hopefully) be fully recovered from by the start of the season.

I don't think any supporter injured Framps or Myers. They could simple have strained a muscle reaching for a ball, for example.

David Watts and The Uookster went in the ground early. As we sat admiring the stadium,Martin wandered over and greeted us. We then had a half hour conversation with him.He chatted about most things Brentford--FA Cup, players, training, contracts etc..What an absolute Top Man--He was already on my list of Top People,he 's easily No 1........ :sorted: :sorted:

Agree toan extent but when injuries kick in the options are limited.

The 4-5-1 (Burton on his own, with May and Rankin pushing on; ie 4-3-3 when we`re attacking) is working well at the moment. It gives us massive insurance when on the backfoot with Hutch, Roman and Talbot are all central.

Talbot was superb yesterday, just sits in front of the back four giving extra protection and we break when we can! Not the prettiest but it`s effective.

Away from home I think MA wants to accomodate the same 3 midfield grafters. When we`re at home it may prove to be a more difficult formula to enable; ie it could lead to a number of tight 1-0 wins if we are not able to get enough attacks going.

It`s all about horses for courses and the performances in the last 2 away games suggests MA has it spot on - frustrating the opposition, hit em on the break, soak the pressure up etc etc.

Away from home the formation and tactics are spot on.

I have a slight worry that we can continue this form at home - if similar formation is played - but let`s wait and see. If we get 6 points out of 6 froim the next 2 home games we`ll be in a great position; even 4 points should see us established in the top 6. Time will tell.....bring on Swindon

Thank goodness for some sensible and reasoned opposition supporters. So good to see someone putting their team's case strongly and giving a balanced view of the game with out resorting to abuse and rose-tinted spectacle-ism! As YorkBee says, such a pleasant change after the Luton bad-losers of last week!

I hope that you eventually persuade Robbie to part with some "hard-earned" to upgrade your ground and good luck to you for the rest of the season!

There's not much to add to above except to say that this team has done what so many Brentford teams have failed to do at Vale Park and that's get the 3 points.

We defended resolutely throughout against a Vale side that did not have one of its better days.

Job done. :sorted:

Mostly agree with all said about match except I would highlight the excellent work rate from most and in particular Rankin who looks good .
Myers was poor and in fact has never been anything other than sub-standard. Taken off because guys were walking around him. Salako replaced him and maybe not the best left back but does give attacking options.
The ground is a decent ground - all-seater stadium - but does suffer from the stands being too far from the pitch and the majority of fans ( only 4000) sitting nowhere near the front of the stands. AS at Wigan thus the atmosphere is awful despite this the fans of Port Vale and stewards etc are the most friendly that I have come across.

Very professional performance.

Defending and attcking in numbers and with conviction. Solid at the back, with Dobson and Myers obviously unfit, and Talbot doing a good job in front of them. Didn't think we looked as solid once he went off.

Front three appear to work, but just wish they could start putting the ball away.
