That seems...crammed 😐 I figured the season would run into June or start in July to accommodate the World Cup.

Yeah, but the season cannot run into June 2023 if the players are then going to get a proper rest after a hard campaign.

For a weekend.

Before their clubs all set off on an end-of-season tour of America or the Far East etc.

If you compare it to this season, then we would have a league game this weekend (instead of international break). With the end of the league being extended by one week in 2023, it leaves five games to be squeezed in elsewhere (if my maths is correct).

Imagine things will look a lot tighter/busy in the Championship!

Presumably there won’t be any other international breaks next season. Otherwiss hard to see how we could be in GW16 this weekend after starting only a week earlier. But if there won’t be those international breaks the season is pretty similar. Biggest change other than combining the international breaks over Nov-Dec would be shifting Carabao Cup QF into January and running up against FA Cup.

Probably a July start for the EFL I would say...

I’ll have to find a lower league team to ease my withdrawal symptoms. Maybe some Poopah Scoop attendance and mental sabotage?
Ban this.

It is crammed but part of me says fair play to the PL. They didn't decide to host a WC mid season so they obviously want as little disruption to WC season and the one after it as possible. These dates whilst starting slightly earlier and finishing slightly later reduces any knock on effect to season 2023/2024 or to this season.

I suspect international managers will be unhappy with these dates especially Southgate as the PL effectively gives teams no preparation pre WC. It's possible England could be starting their WC six or seven days after the PL breaks up.

The Premier League season will start on 6 August 2022.

Match round 16 will be the last set of matches played over the weekend of 12-13 November ahead of the call-up period for the tournament beginning on Monday 14 November.

Not much room for midweeks because of ....

September 6/7, 2022 1st match Champions League group stage
September 8, 2022 1st match Europa League group stage
September 8, 2022 1st match Europa Conference League group stage
September 13/14, 2022 2nd match Champions League group stage
September 15, 2022 2nd match Europa League group stage
September 15, 2022 2nd match Europa Conference League group stage

19-27 September FIFA International Break

October 4/5, 2022 3rd match Champions League group stage
October 6, 2022 3rd match Europa League group stage
October 6, 2022 3rd match Europa Conference League group stage
October 11/12, 2022 4th match Champions League group stage
October 13, 2022 4th match Europa League group stage
October 13, 2022 4th match Europa Conference League group stage

October 25/26, 2022 5th match Champions League group stage
October 27, 2022 5th match Europa League group stage
October 27, 2022 5th match Europa Conference League group stage

November 1/2, 2022 6th match Champions League group stage

Week 16 is 12 November,

Two midweeks before the World Cup break

Possibly Aug 31 and Nov 9

The EFL Cup will be played just before Xmas in Dec R 4 so R 3 will be October and R 2 in August

Though on the flip side, as it comes after preseason and 16 PL games players ought to be in good physical shape and less fatigued than after a full season. Southgate is also pretty clear in his preferred formations and a core set of key players which he’s developed with some success over two tournaments where we’ve had our best successive finishes since 66. Going for a week of tactical honing and warm/hot weather acclimatisation from the dark cold of November ought to be like a midseason jolly! And all in a place where they’re not likely to be dentist’s chairing the night away in a club.

As it goes up to end of May it could be just 3 or 4 depending on the Xmas and NY Games
Month Weekends
Aug 4
Sep 3
Oct 5
Nov 2
Dec 1
Jan 2
Feb 4
Mar 3
Apr 5
May.4
So thats 33 matches
If you play 2 at Xmas then you only need 3 midweeks

But presumably that’s the same position for all domestic leagues / international managers? Can’t imagine the Bundesliga or Serie A pausing any earlier than the EPL?

Hard to know but different leagues don't always follow the same schedules. For example other major domestic leagues have long mid season breaks compared to the PL. Also I doubt the Bundesliga will restart on Boxing day, I suspect that league will finish earlier than the PL pre WC; pushing their league into late June.

Championship clubs are outraged at proposals that would see them play up to 24 matches in 105 days to accommodate the World Cup next season.

Sportsmail has seen plans that would require second-tier sides to complete 21 league matches and potentially three League Cup clashes after a shortened summer break in the first part of a congested campaign that would start on July 30 and end on November 12.

Clubs would return to action on December 10, when the Qatar World Cup is at the quarter-final stage, before completing the 46-match league season, as normal, on May 6.

A 46 game championship sounds a nightmare next season, another reason it's important we stay in the PL to avoid that chaotic schedule. It's also possible we'd have players at the WC quarter final stage.
