After our survival was confirmed earlier today, the recruitment team are already on their way to securing the players that will establish ourselves in the top division next season. The below is my thoughts on the original first team squad (based on the website) and how we can improve overall.

GOALKEEPERS

Raya - KEEP - Extend the contract .. his movement and distribution is incredible along with shot stopping. Only Allison and Ederson are better than him imo
Fernandez -RELEASE- Despite a short stint in goal, I wasn't convinced in his ability and the sharp improvement in our defence when Raya returned confirmed that imo. I don't think we should take up that option.
Lossl.. - KEEP -Again wasn't great in the few games , however, Prem experience and the Danish connection might keep him on.
Balcombe -LOAN-Another loan or a sale.. Cox has surpassed him
Cox -LOAN- EFL loan .. another Raya in the making

I would hope we bring in 1 class GK to compete with Raya to ensure he has strong competition and deputise ably if injured ( as we saw earlier this season)

DEFENDERS

Thompson (LB) -SELL-.. not good enough ..nominal fee
Henry (LB) - KEEP - extension was vital and will only improve
Goode (CB) -SELL- Sale or loan.. at 27 he doesn't have the ability to play week in week out.. deserves credit for steeping up during the injury crisis
Pinnock (CB) - KEEP - extend .. colossus of a player who has proven himself.. love his attitude and humbleness..
Jansson (CB) - KEEP - best season he's ever had.. has calmed down from the hothead at Leeds
Ajer (CB/RB).. KEEP ..Sensational player/signing who will be eyed up by top 8 clubs... another season with us should propel his game to another level.. needs to stay fit and injury-free though .. Big props to our recruitment team for convincing him to join.
Zanka (CB)..-RELEASE-- Impressive in the few occasions he played but his age and injury record makes him a risk with our tight budget.. thanks for the effort for a nice guy with strong principles.
Jeanvier ( CB) -RELEASE-. very happy to see he's recovered from that awful injury.. hopefully got a few more years left in the game
MBS (CB) - KEEP - .. big learning curve with a mixture of good and bad performances.. at 23 he will only improve and his an able squad player
Racic (CB) -SELL-. fallen well down the pecking order and needs to reignite his career elsewhere.. possibly Denmark
Roerslev (RB)- KEEP -Same with MBS.. some good or bad but an able squad player who will definitely improve at 22
Gordon (LB) -RELEASE-. during our injury crisis, he didn't play so will presume the coaching staff don't trust him to step up. Good luck to him.
Stevens (LB/CDM/RB)- LOAN- a player that TF rates.. should go out on loan to develop maybe AFC Wimbledon
Oyegoke - (RB) -LOAN- on a long B team contract .. needs a EFL loan to build up his career

A top class RB is a must after 2 windows without an acquisition also add a back-up LB to push Rico and a RCB to eventually replace Pontus when he leaves at the end of next season.. I can see another CB coming in January if necessary

MIDFIELDERS

Norgaard (CDM)- KEEP -. stepped up massively as CDM and is the first name on the team sheet.. extension was vital and will be eyed up by top clubs
Jensen (CM) - KEEP - Marmite player.. can oscillate between Champions League and Conference quality in a 10 min spell.. however his base performances have improved since Eriksen joined. TF rates him.
Dasilva (CAM) - KEEP -Frustrating season recovering from an injury and then getting sent off for a daft challenge against the Toon. Still has massive quality and is a Prem class player. Watch out for him next year.
Baptiste ( CAM) - KEEP - Showed flashes of quality. With 5 subs we need players of his ability of the bench
Janelt (CAM/CDM) - KEEP -best value signing we have ever made.. top class player on his day who still has a high ceiling for improvement as demonstrated by his extension
Onyeka (CAM)- KEEP - mediocre season .. needs to step up next year
Erisken (CAM)- KEEP - WORLD CLASS. KEEP AT ALL COSTS
Fosu (RW/LW/LWB/RWB) -SELL- already gone according to reports.. thanks for the promotion season.. good luck in France
MPH (CAM) -LOAN- Needs an EFL loan to improve his consistency
Haygarth (CM) -LOAN- same as MPH done his time with the B Team
Bidstrup (CM) - KEEP - with 5 subs we will need his tenacity during the Xmas period.. although I can see an EFL loan
Gilbert (CM) -SELL- done his time with the B team.. time to step up to the lower leagues and build a career

A quick winger ( or two) is a must . If Eriksen stays we are well stocked up in centre of midfield.. if he leaves we need a top replacement

FORWARDS

Mbeumo (ST/RW) - KEEP - a decent season but has to improve his finishing .. I can see him being a beast next season
Canos ( RW/LW/ RWB/LWB) -SELL- taken his chance in the prem and has done a job for us.. would love him to stay but with a year left, I can see him being sold with a higher quality player being brought in
Forss (ST) -LOAN- a poor season for him due to limited Prem time.. would like a European loan for him to flourish and bang in 15-20 goals like he's capable of.
Valencia ( RW) -SELL- poor signing that needs clearing out.. despite his nice smile
Toney (ST) - KEEP -huge player for us. If sold, he must be replaced with similar quality .. will go for a big fee
Ghoddos (RW/CAM) - KEEP -. I would keep Saman as he is versatile and TF trusted him ahead of other players in big games and moments.. depends if he wants to accept being a sub
Wissa (ST/LW) - KEEP- very good finisher of the bench who is improving his game all the time.. next season will be big for him after the disruption he suffered last year
Dervisolgu (ST/LW) --SELL- .. doesn't want to be here .. will be sold for a bigger fee than he signed for.. combined with the big loan fees paid for him will be a nice profit to reinvest.
NYC (ST) - LOAN- needs men's football after impressive B team outings..

Would love a back up striker to Toney (if he stays) maybe Pukki who TF knows well from Brondby? (although age goes against him) . Brennan Johnson would be ideal as another forward.

Overall, I can see another 3/4 key players joining to enhance the squad. The players and staff will understand the demands of the Prem. .especially the difficult midwinter fixtures when cup games occur as well. I expect PG and the recruitment team to learn from that hard period this time around.

Let's enjoy the next two games and another exciting summer awaits us.. COYB!

I mostly agree, Ghoddos is the only one I question. But he’s been solid and reliable in so many different roles, he would be a good player to keep.

the three players I’m most excited to see with full seasons are Dasilva, Onyeka, and Bidstrup. The midfield is a bit crowded but there are going to be injuries and load management in the busiest time will be important. They’ll all get their chance!

Brilliant work. But Canos I can’t agree with. I would hate to see him leave. You need players that can contribute but also GET the club.

Would actually break my heart to see him leave.

I agree about keeping Canos. Not just because of his affinity to the club but because he is an effective utility player who could come off the bench into a number of positions. With 5 subs from next season there is at the very least a place for him in every match day squad.

Keep Canos. For reasons people have stated already. We don't have the depth out wide already and you want to sell a player who has proven he can play at this level?

Releasing 3 CBs? Well would leave us incredibly shirt. No thanks. It's not a given we can get the qaulity in. I'd keep Zanka for another year. He won't expect to play week in week out and no doubt have injuries at some point.

Yeah I'd keep Canos - gives 100% off the bench and can be used everywhere

I'd give Eriksen £100kpw, that's only £5m per season and vs the revenues gained from being in the PL or the transfer fee we'd have to pay to replace him with someone else he'd be worth every penny. If you don't want to throw any wage structure out of whack then give him £40kpw for two years and a £6m signing on fee

I don't think he'll be motivated by money. I think if we can show we can continue to push forward and play in a positive manner (like we have since we joined with the exception of the Utd game) then I think we stand a good chance of keeping him - wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't decided for quite a while though just like in Jan. Shame we didn't have that one year extension clause

I’d add a mobile beast of a centre back to the summer shopping list as a medium term replacement for Pontus. A Giorgio Chiellini with pace. Not a lot to ask for, really.

Neither were great but Alvaro was miles better than Lossl. Alvaro’s distribution was poor but he was a decent shot stopper. Lossl made 3 saves and conceded 6 goals in 3 games, cost us the United and Wolves game with 2 mistakes for Elanga and Neves goals. Alvaro is also 23 so has a lot of room to improve, Lossl is in his 30s.

I think there are four positions we need to reinforce: inverted wingers on each side (Canós is a sub from the bench at best so I'd hope we can find a couple with more potential), plus right and left back/wing back.

Yes, apart from the proposal to sell Canos, the choice of Lossl over Alvaro was the biggest wrong in the OP! Raya’s distribution has improved hugely over the last three years and even last season he was capable of making bad errors. It would be impossible to buy a Raya level keeper ready made so unless we have a better candidate in mind if Alvaro is thought to have potential I’d keep him.

I think it would be difficult to get in a better winger than Canos who would then be willing to benchwarm like he has done recently behind Bryan, Ivan, Wissa (all three of whom imo should be our front 3 next year) and others.

Don't think he's good enough (imo) to be in the first XI if we want to improve on this year's league position but I think he is a decent enough squad/depth player to step in adhoc for injuries and maybe start carabao games, for example. He clearly loves Brentford however I'm not sure that will be enough to convince him to take a back seat role long-term, he only turned 25 in February

It depends on how high he thinks he can go. He’s versatile, positive, loves the club and works his balls off. He might actually be quite happy playing 15-20 games a season and getting a big cheer when he comes on and being asked “how did you score that goal?”

But if he gets an offer from Barca or Valencia it might be a dream come true. The lure of regular starts at a Championship club might not really compare to what he has.

As much as I love Sergi, getting in a better winger (or 2) is exactly what we need to do in the window.

He’s been amazing for us, played a huge part in our promotion, and he’ll forever have our first PL goal, but do we really want to see him running out his contract on the bench? If we can get a decent fee for him then maybe it’s time for him to go

COYB!
Pretty much spot on. Lossl stays as a third keeper…will hopefully never play but we thought that this season!

I agree with most but would deffo Keep Canos. he is one of the versatile players we have that as others have said always gives 100% gets the club ethic and when cut bleeds in red and white stripes.
I also agree with the need for another Keeper

The ones we're debating about...Canos, Ghoddos, back-up keeper aren't going to be the difference-makers. It's critical we retain our spine, and I would put Raya, Pinnock, Ajer, Norgaard, Erikesn and Toney in that bracket. If we keep hold of those 6 I would be extremely confident of at least matching our mid-high 40s points total of this season.

If we keep that spine of the squad injury free and make suitable additions, I’ll be disappointed if we aren’t aiming for at least 10 points more than we’ll end this season with.

Agree. Although I can’t remember the three saves Lossl made. Alvaro has time on his hands and his experience this year one would expect given him much needed experience of the level he should reach. We may equally bring in another keeper.

I mostly agree.
On the keeper position, I would be happy with Cox being our 2nd keeper to start off with. I don't think he's much worse than Alvaro and Lössl.
We have four PL games in august, before the transfer window shuts. Then we have 12 PL games before the World Cup. And then we have another two PL games late December before the transfer window opens again. So in the absolute worst case scenario that Raya would get injured on September 2, we would only need Cox in goal for 14 PL games.

Agree, in all the games he played he never made a save and did not command his area in a way you would expect given his experience. We can do much better imo.

Really good summary except for the Forss comment. He has failed to progress and the idea that he will bang in lots of goals elsewhere flies in the face of the evidence. Time to free up his career opportunities

Does make me wonder what points total we would have finished on without that bad run of injuries.

And what this club has the potential to achieve next season.

I think comfortably top half if everyone had stayed fit even without CE joining. With both we’d probably have been pushing top 6.

If we keep Eriksen and add a few quality signings I genuinely don’t think it’s unreasonable for us to push for European football

Don't see many changes if we can keep our squad together. We will probably let go some fringe players and get 2/3/4 new additions of quality "first 11 potential" players given we will probably have a bigger budget next season.

Keeping Raya will be vital and as for backup that is a bit of a conundrum. In the PL you need three keepers capable of playing and making a contribution not sure Cox is ready for that although he will be a year older. I thought Alvaro had something about him and a lot of the potential attributes that a younger Raya had so will interesting to see what the club do there.

Agree with most - potentially a busy summer with a number of fringe players making an exit and possibly a couple that you might not expect like Canos/Ghoddos. Need 2/3 players for starting roles - RWB, LW and then CAM if Eriksen leaves plus 4/5 squad players.

Priorities:
  1. New deal for Raya
  2. New deal for Eriksen
If we can then stave off interest in the rest of our top players, it will just be about moving players on that are on the fringes (e.g those out on loan, Fosu, Ghoddos, Jeanvier etc.) and brining in a small number of quality players.

Aiming for, yes. Although +10 points would put us up there with West Ham. Not sure we're quite there yet...although of course we did do the double over them!

The dream window is:

Selling / Loaning some of the fringe players
Renewing contracts of key players
Signing 3/4 players, strengthening on the wing and at full back.

It becomes hard if there’s interest in Toney and Raya. If we lose Toney we’d need to smash our transfer record to fulfil what would be a very hard job of replacing him. Finding another keeper like Raya would be extremely hard as well.

Fingers crossed!

There are 5-6 games we lost which we ought to have got at least a draw if not a win (Brighton, Chelsea and Leicester at home in particular, probably Wolves at home too barring concussions and drone) and probably only one “lucky” win (away at WH) so another 10 points even with the injuries etc is not a big jump. As we saw between 19-20 and 20-21 where we cut out the undeserved 0-1s by tactical improvement it isn’t unrealistic to hope we can achieve that next season if we retain key players and add a few quality players.

Agree. Although I can’t remember the three saves Lossl made.
They were probably all weak shots/headers straight at him.
Fernandez, however, did make some decent saves and can hopefully improve over time. Lossl is older and probably has no room for improvement. So if we are going to keep one of them, my vote goes to Alvaro.

Please please please don’t get ideas above your station. According to Leeds’ fans we are not a proper Premier League club so we shouldn’t be planning like this. Also our stadium isn’t big enough. Also we don’t have a big enough fan base. They aren’t sure we belong in the Championship either so best listen. Could you do a transfer list assuming we are OK to play in League 1? Think they will allow us to do that.

At least Alvo saved a few. Everything shot at Lossi went in!
Alvo looked a very good shot stopper. Definite promise there and a case of learning about the physical side of English game and being able to "own" his 6 yard box and not be bullied. That in turn will give defence confidence in him who in turn will focus on their own roles.

Bit harsh on MBS, whom I think has been much more good than bad when stepping up.

I would be amazed if Saman stays tbh. I would keep Canos if he is prepared to be a squad player.

Pace and the ability to beat a man the most important requirement in forwards recruitment.

Agree with everything else.
