This thread is about a specific chant, not a wider PC debate or hating particular teams.

It's been an interesting thread to read. Let's keep it on track please.

It has been interesting and I'm surprised we have reached an almost universal agreement that the song doesn't really represent us in the best light.

Definitely in favour of revamping rather than retiring the song though, as once people are a few beers in and "Oh West London" goes up the temptation is to join in.

"Bus stops, Nylons and Brentford" :sorted:

Agreed, Rather surprised to be honest.

But maybe there are some holding back. Perhaps an anon poll....?

I love the chant but that's possibly because I've never sussed the words to the 3rd line so leave that to the faithful.

I mean it's perfect for tomorrow to throw back at Palace's 'South London and Proud' brand bollox. Just do what I do and mumble the awkward bits.

My moral compass points in direction that I like, however it doesn’t guide or not should it, what a 1,000 people want to sing at a football match, turn your ears off for a 10 seconds, not particularly a song I enjoy but that’s life.

If it points in any direction you like, it's not a very good compass! 🧭

I’m at Green Man festival in my Bees top and a bunch of lads just came and sang Bees UP Fulham down at me. Never retire that one!
Basically everyone loves us and I’ve had so many come up to say how brilliant they thought we were v Arsenal and how great it is we are PL. Despite being in south wales, no Swansea here. V proud to be a Bee despite missing Palace.

I'm going to admit to being totally ignorant of the 'Oh West London' offending lyrics...after the first bit I never sang the next bit and the words never registered. I had to google it and the resulting answer (cringy as it is) seems to allocate it to Chelsea.

I like the (first bit of the) chant but not sure changing the words is going to work now...bit tainted.

I am a frequent viewer but an infrequent contributor on GPG, but watching an interview with Klopp about the chant at the Norwich game made me think of something I've long wanted to post:

I've been a season ticket holder for a number of years and generally think what we sing as a fanbase is great - passionate, positive and rightfully taking some shots at those inferior West London rivals. The one exception to this is the "oh West London is wonderful..." chant. I'm sure people will disagree with this, saying it is just a bit of fun etc., but especially as we move into the new stadium and hopefully become an established premier league club, I think there's a strong argument for ditching a chant which is, at best, outdated. It offers nothing positive for the players and surely only alienates fans or potential fans of the club. If you have a young family, would you honestly want them singing this? Whilst you could make the argument that chants with swearing etc. are also off-putting, I think there is a distinction between this and something which I think offers nothing good.

I am incredibly proud to be a fan of the club and as I say, I'm sure some will dismiss this out of hand. But I think as a forward looking club this is something we should seriously be looking to change.

Well done for putting your head above the parapet! I couldn't agree more with your view about this chant. It is well beyond outdated in a distinctive and particularly objectionable way.

If people want to carry on singing it, that's ultimately up to them and am sure they will. But it is good to get out there that the attitudes it encompasses are not universally accepted - and that if those singing it are seeking to generate broader support throughout the stadium, this is not really the chant to chose.

I was just explaining this thread to my wife over a nespresso and pain au raisin at the breakfast table. When having to say the song out loud, in the cold light of day, even in spoken form, I actually found myself cringing up.

Only thought I heard it once during the game - and very few joined in

First song I heard as I went through the turnstile.
But did not last - couple of times during game it was started, but pleased that it did not continue as I also think it is past its sell by date. Much prefer ‘sing up for the Bees, can’t hear xyz sing....’. That is my favourite chant.

The male to female ratio of the TW8 postcode suggests that Brentford is not actually full of the aforementioned and therefore said song is factually incorrect...

I don’t mind it but find it a bit silly when we sing it having been out sung for the few minutes just beforehand.

Also a shame that the only chants that the majority join in with are ‘by far the greatest team’, ‘hey Jude’ and the one you’ve mentioned.

Hopefully this will change if we continue to take 2,500-3,000 every other week and sing in greater numbers on the west stand (when compared to Ealing Road) so more and more people become familiar with and comfortable singing more chants

Heard it dang a couple of times during the game albeit half heartedly although the lads next to me seemed to make a point of singing it with extra gusto which I suspect is a result of it now becoming ‘a thing’.

As for other songs, I want to again make a case for the ‘Deano, Deano we went a goal’ song being converted for Ivan.

It’s always sung a bit more when we play teams from other parts of London.

I really don’t think it has anything to do with this thread and suspect you won’t hear it much at Villa next week.

It's really good to hear all the views on this (and a bit about yesterday as I couldn't go), especially those who have been made to feel uncomfortable or people who have thought a bit more about it more individually or with others. I always expected that some fans would disagree and I want to emphasise the point @Banana helpfully made that this is about a specific chant, not a wider PC debate - the number of people that have agreed makes me feel it is definitely worth highlighting even if you disagree personally. There was always going to be those at the opposite end who staunchly disagree, but I think the responses we have seen show people have considered it more which is really encouraging IMO.

And in term of Ivan Toney chants, do people recall the Yaya/Kolo Toure chant at City?

I could see fans getting on board with "Ivan... Ivan, Ivan... Ivan, Ivan... Ivan Toney!!!!"

Its quite cute my 5 year old singing "Fulham get battered everywhere they go" at home but she couldnt make "oh west london is wonderful, its full of etc" sound cute.

Its always been quite a crap song anyway. i won't miss it if its gone.

I've always thought it was sung by those not old enough to know what to do when faced with those specific items.

I’m glad you brought it up. It’s been a good discussion and I agree encouraging.

Second verse for whoever partners him up top. Switching to Wissa works well, and Mbeumo at a slight stretch.

As West Drayton is in our catchment area we could sing VAR is one of our own but maybe this would upset the IT nerds

The song doesn't say Brentford is full of the aforementioned though

I reckon you could put me in the "political correctness gone mad" brigade on most issues. The "Oh West London, is wonderful..." song however, does not fall into this category in any way whatsoever. I've always hated it, never sung it (not that I'm a big singer!) and never will. Should have been consigned to the dustbin decades ago.

I presume most who contributed don’t travel, they’d be having a more difficult Sunday than most, I reckon this thread has made this song more popular.

Yeah was sung a lot yesterday, was with my 12 year old daughter we just replace the words with "Bees, Bees and Brentford" she loves the tune but also said she completely understands how the words could make some women uncomfortable. I doubt it kept her up at night though and imagine she will be singing it again but our version ;)

Heard it 4 or 5 times in the upper tier. There was a little girl next to me with her father, I felt embarrassed for them. Just watched the game when it was chanted, hopefully it starts to fade out or a replacement version can be thought up.

How about “West London is wonderful … it’s full of Steves, Beats and Grindah…”?
They really emphasise Brentford rather than West London.
Kurupt FM(Kurupt FM) is wonderful (is wonderful) Kurupt FM is wonderful its full of Beats, Decoy and Grindah oh Brentford is wonderful.
Or Steves or Mich or Chabuddy.
