Interesting Independent article on the main man:

A really sensible and reasoned piece. It’d be wonderful if that calculus meant Said’s best chance of regular PL football came from staying with us and going up with us. In two seasons time if he’d done that and kept on producing his magic for us in the PL he’ll have become a £50m player at his peak and only 27.

Sadly it didn’t happen for us in August but I think the BMW with us this season would have done very nicely in the PL. I mean, FFS Bamford’s scored three times already, how hard can it be?!

I know we are said to have offered Maupay more than Brighton did but £40-50k a week? I'd be astounded.
Be astounded, im fairly certain it was around the 40k mark.

It's not worth paying anyone that sort of money. But he's still on his original contract so I'm sure there is a bit of room for a raise. Not to persuade him to stay but to protect our investment, keep him happy and pay him closer to what he deserves if he is here past deadline day.
What do you think will be the norm if we wiin promotion? I bet the average squad player is on 30K+ a week.

The first comment in the "Comments" section below that piece illustrates the incredible self entitlement that so many other people display towards our club when they bang on about us being a small club.

What a plumb that chap was who made the comments we're holding him hostage, and can you believe it, a player who earns a rather nice salary already has given his all for us for 2 seasons now, I mean really, what a disgrace, how dare we expect that of him!!!

People don't like to think before posting. They're usually salty because their team got ripped off or sold someone on the cheap.

Or maybe they're just a Fulham fan...

Wow, they're really covering all the bases then. At 4.01 they were saying "Hodgson downplays Benrahma talk"

How does that work then, do they contact MB and say "just to let you know, we've upped our interest". Does MB say "Oh that's nice, how much you offering?" and they say "Oh no, we're not bidding, just upping our interest".

What a nonsense story by SKY.

I would never ever consider Said as a luxury player. His stats are all there for anyone to see for us over the last 2 seasons. We wouldn't have challenged last year without his goals and assist. I am shocked as anyone that he is still a Brentford player. When you see players like Jesse Linggard on 120k a week and Dan James on 45k a week for United you wonder what Said needs to do as he is far superior than both of them. I honestly think C-19 and no fans allowed in grounds has impacted on Premiership clubs bidding for Said but I do not see him as a gamble. How many players whom has to played for 7 weeks would have scored the goals he did yesterday. His situation is similar to Zaha at Palace ad Tarky at Burnley, no club is prepared to pay what the clubs want and as a result both these players are at a club they believe they have outgrown.

I am more convinced come 16 October that Said will still be a player. Only club whom may throw money around could be Fulham but not sure he would want to go there unless he has a relegation release clause in his contract.

Said just needs to do what he has done over the last two years and come January if we get a bid for him that matches our valuation then he will leave.

Finally, getting annoyed with the FreeBenrahma tweets.

Basically Zaha holds the key to all this.

Did anyone else think Said was slightly holding his hamstring when he came off though and after when getting up from his seat?
Yes I thought that too

Whether he's a luxury depends on your situation. He's a key player for us but at the price we want would be a luxury for Villa who already have Grealish, or Palace with Zaha and Eze. Bottom half teams can probably only carry one or maybe two players like that in the EPL. We have such a tight structure in the rest of the team that he has relative freedom, plus we tend to dominate games.

Given Covid I can understand the reluctance of clubs to spend the money, but we are winners either way: big cash bonus or continuing to enjoy our best ever player. Personally I think he's good enough for a Leicester, Spurs or Arsenal.

Agree with all that. He has got the natural ability to play for the majority of premiership clubs but it could also be a case these clubs need strengthening in a position that can't accommodate Said. At the moment it is a win win situation for us.

can’t see him going to Fulham. Messi and Ronaldo together can’t save them and we can probably pay as much as them so not a financial decision . Palace would move in if Zaha went but that doesn’t look likely. Villa still a possibility but can they have both Grealish and Benrahma in same team?

More than happy for this to go the distance, see the desperation setting in, before whoever it is pays what we want. If he stays great, it's win win. Said does not appear to be too perplexed, playing some great football, scoring and enjoying himself. Our management team are different class.

How can someone directly involved in 27 goals be considered a luxury? Odd that.
Because all those goals are in the Championship.

Clearly he is overpriced for the market place as no one appears to be prepared to pay what we seemingly think he is worth.

Yes let’s cut the price just when teams feel the pressure as their season has not started well.

I‘d like him to stay as in the Championship he is a very good player on the whole against Championship defenders.

Hopefully he will get the opportunity to show what he is about against better players. At the moment though, no one would appear to see value in him.

Pressure? After a couple of games?

Be English?

Seriously, though: clubs ARE willing to spend a premium on "home grown" players, hence why so many clubs spend so much money on young, decent British players. Like James. Like all Villa's signings, like Eze, Ramsdale... the list goes on.

Lingard...well United have been trying to offload him for a little while.

Said will leave if teams get their thumbs out of their arses.

Said will stay and help fire us to the Premier league if they don't.

Plus African internationals do not appear to have the same market value as European or South American players..

Most of their stuff is these days, just dumbed down clickbait rubbish. They just make it up if they haven't got a story as they have 24 hours of sports news to fill.

He could I suppose play an orthodox rather than inverted right winger and replace Trezeguet who I don’t particularly rate. With Grealish and Watkins all interchanging that would be a pretty strong front 3.

Just catching up...it's been all over the place today 😂

And players sometimes 'fail to perform' when being triple marked, as some clubs have been doing...he is way, way too god for this level. 27 G+A is a fantastic return though given he didn't really hit form until October. If I was Palace I would have sold Zaha and bought Benrahma...though I don't see anyone coming in for Wilf now.

Liverpool dont seem to agree with you. They have Mo Salah & Sadio Mane both worth a tidy penny.
They also have Joel Matip (Cameroon) & Naby Keita (Guinea)
There is talk that Shaqiri is leaving, because he didnt make their CC squad v Arsenal, how about considering an Algerian as his replacement.

Kind of emphasises LB’s point, no?

Liverpool signed all of those players for far under what would’ve been their market value if they were European.

The interesting piece of that article is the 21 mis placed passes out of 43. For all his brilliance and goal scoring I can understand this being an issue for a bottom half premiership team who won’t have the possession dominance that we have. Having said that I would love him to stay of course so I can see him complete those 22 passes!

I don't see why something mightn't be offered, given that Maupay was offered more to stay last year, as is well documented.

I think him staying is still most unlikely given Thomas is still actively saying that he is for sale at the right price. I don't remember us saying that about Maupay, although we all knew it was likely bids would come in. Two more weeks is still long enough for the PL also rans to lose another couple of games and get more desperate. Will they pay £25m? I doubt it. Will we accept £15-£20m instead? Maybe, but we have no need to financially as far as I'm aware. I suppose it also depends on whether he's happy here. We went through all this last August with him, he stayed and seemed please to be here once he settled back in the team. However, he wasn't exactly joyful at his two goals on Thursday!

This weekend is their only chance to lose in the P/L before the Transfer Window closes on the 16th Oct, because of the long international break.
