No, he wasn’t a fringe player then. Everyone seems to have forgotten about the first half of that season. Said was returning from injury and didn’t really get up to his previous season levels until about November 2019 and scored, IIRC 14 of his 17 for the season in 2020. Bryan was brand new into the club. At the start of the season while we had the BMW at the club, they weren’t our regular starting front three. Watkins was also fresh into that role and something of a risk and experiment. Sergi was however a nailed on starter until his injury and had been looking very up for it, he just hadn’t scored yet (iirc his record for most shots without scoring didn’t get overtaken until after the resumption of the season after the COVID break). When he came back from his injury he had fallen behind Said and Bryan, but that didn’t make him a fringe player just because it took a long while to recapture his pre-injury levels. Bryan mainly got regular early starts because of Sergi’s absence and we were fortunate he started so strongly and made up for both Sergi and Said not getting a lot of goals early season.
Sergi was playing as a RWB, not forward. Had he of stayed fit he probably would have stayed a regular in the team, but only as a wing back. As a forward he has never been consistently good for us, lacks the decision making that we need for players that advanced in the final third. Excels playing extremely wide from a starting defensive position where he has to stretch the game and not try and cut in.

Nope. He was playing and starting right wing. Unless you think we were lined up with WBs and FBs in a 7-2-1.

He was one of attacking 3. Had the most assists IIRC.

And looking our brightest player until he got crocked.

His assist for Watkins’ goal away at Boro was an outrageous piece of skill.

Sergi has arguably been our best player so far, so the clamour to find a RB to sign to replace him in our starting lineup surprises me. Or is our potential new player only to replace Sergi if and when his form dips?
Was there a “clamour” or were we looking for a RB alongside several other positions that needed strengthening. Sergi spent most of last season on the wing and was excellent so another RB was probably a good idea

Does anyone think that?

If they didn’t year or so ago maybe they weren’t wrong then either. No point bringing up ancient history when everyone had seen him come of age.

I’d say the persistence of the various rumours indicated a priority for the club. Sergi may play with a lot of enthusiasm and be an attacking outlet but he’s never a full back, so it’s still out there as a requirement. That he and Ajer have been forced into so much defending shows opposition analysts believe it to be a weakness.

Or is that just a coincidence with all 3 teams having strong left sides? Tierney, Zaha and El Ghazi?

I doubt opponents in the PL at the moment are thinking we have a weaker side as they will be looking at us as being overall generally weaker. They’re not avoiding going down the right through fear that Rico will snuff them out.

This may change but at the moment Sergi and Kris are doing a good job so if anything the change would be to test if the other side is weaker.

Despite the alleged "weakness" at right-back, we've only conceded one goal in three games.

Is he not already written in as a Legend for scoring our 1st PL goal, and I think also scoring the first senior goal at BCS in the 2-2 friendly draw withOxford ?
Totally, but was thinking more of his potential to become part of the fabric of the club. His attitude, ambassadorial work and commitment to the club/community encapsulates the BFC ethos. I hope he remains involved with the club for decades to come.

The day he leaves the club will be a sad one. I don’t know whether he has the interest or aptitude to move into coaching but he is someone who it would be great to see stay past when he is a player. Though I imagine as club ambassador he would just get hugged to pieces every game after doing the rounds of the boxes and lounges.

Goodness me! The lad is only 24 years of age what on earth are we doing talking about him going into coaching when he's finished. Believe you me there will be a massive amount of water passing under Brentford Bridge in the next 8 to 10 years before Sergi even begins to think about retirement.

Oh I know this and the reality is that unless we drop back down and revert to bumping along midtable in the Championship the reality for him in 2-3 years max is to have reached his peak and not quite be good enough for where we are. So he will dispassionately be sold off to another club. KOC only stayed so long because we didn’t come near to becoming too good for him until he was in the twilight of his playing career. But I think Sergi would always be welcomed back after, at least by many of those of us who have seen the last 5+ years.

Yes, who knows, the warm days, and the blue of the Mediterranean may beckon well before then.

Did his job manfully today. He was gutted when subbed. Wohld live to see him cutting in from the other wing but understand why he is on the right. He is a special player, and ours.
As we took Rico off shortly after too it might have made some sense to have done that first and moved Sergi to the left when bringing on Frank O after Baptiste’s sending off. But perhaps that was overall too aggressive a response to going down to 10 men while leading 2-0!

Fantastic performance from Sergi, played a bit further forward for a lot of it and worked really well with Ajer.. Defended very well too..
Got stronger as the game went on. By playing further forward largely kept Robertson quiet. Good contribution for Pinnocks goal & loved that ball to play Toney in near the end- took outstanding defending from Van Dyke to deny him. A very mature performance from the lad.

Hope he finds them, explains why he was the last one out on the pitch. Maybe the cameras picked up who they were given to, assuming it was inside the ground.

I remember seeing them on side of pitch towards end of game. Wondered what they were initially as black (or dark grey) and shiny. No idea why anyone would throw them in crowd as obvious that put there by a player

Perhaps the Club should give a pronunciation guide with the media team sheet?

According to the pronouncekiwi website Canyos is the Mandarin pronunciation – The BBC are obviously trying to appeal to the huge Chinese market.

I still see him as the weak link in our defence. He was the one playing Salah on when the other 4 defenders were a bit ahead.

Your opinion and respected. It could have been anyone of our defenders playing him on when you are talking a spoke shave away. Bit harsh imo.

My word.

Hes been fantastic this season. The defensive side of his game as been very good. Zaha for example got nothing out of him.

TV commentators keep pronouncing his name in random different ways, sometimes differently in the same game
