Not great by any streach tonight.
But the squad does look very thin tbf.
Thought we looked knackered.
Hopefully some reinforcements coming in.

It was a bad performance. Vitaly aside everyone was average at best, Sergi, Ivan and Pontus were woeful today. TF took off the wrong CB but otherwise you can’t blame the manager if individual players can’t make simple passes, control the ball or just make stupid mistakes.

Not going to criticise any of the subs as they were left too much to do.

points dropped, but we move on
In the Championship we were getting 75-80% possession most games. That's why Ivan did so well. These days we sometimes hardly see the ball and when we do we tend to give it back to the opposition without debate much of the time. It's no wonder he's struggling. Sergi playing in the wrong position due to necessity and again, struggling. I think we just lack Premier League experience. So many people have told me we'll suffer with 'second season syndrome' next season but I really don't see it that way. I think it's more a question of digging in, getting through it and coming back next season stronger with that extra bit of experience. I always point anyone waffling at me about SSS to Burnley, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Bournemouth, all of whom have been far from one season wonders.

We all knew that we would take a hiding here and there, it's just a shame we couldn't puck something up from this one, with Liverpool and Man U coming up.

I don’t have the solution but Toney has done virtually nothing for several matches. His first touch is poor and he has little pace. Either a change of system or bench him. Be interested in views on this.
Mine is, Toney up front for Manchester City would have scored 25 goals by now. We're (understandably and obviously) not having the possession we had last season.

I thought Janelt and Mbuemo were bright lights for us tonight. Roerslev was decent too. Southampton are a decent side particularly at home. They usually struggle to convert chances to goals but unfortunately not tonight. Ward-Prowse showed what an excellent, intelligent player he is. I thought we were a bit too cavalier at the start of the second half and fell into the trap they set on the counter. Fourth goal was just as poor. Fernandez was completely exposed. On the other hand, I cannot believe we didn't get a second goal in that crazy melee in the second half.
Pretty much how I saw it. It was also good to have Ajer back but we desperately miss Rico. Canos at LWB leaves us so exposed.

Baptiste has some real class carrying the ball and beating men but we need him to do it more often.

Teams have figured out that letting us have the ball at the back with 5-3-2, we don't currently gave the guile to break them down. Toney is in a really rough patch of form and in fairness gets no service.

Chastening defeat all in all 😦

Absolute sh*tshow tonight sadly. Couldn’t pass, couldn’t defend, couldn’t contol the ball

fortunately this is not the norm (although our passing this season hasn’t been the same - admittedly better opponents).

hopefully Frank can get them into a different place for Sunday because more of the same will be ugly

well done Finn Stevens for prem debut aged 18. The likes of him and Bidstrup look like real prospects

I don't expect us to have a monopoly of possession like we did in the Championship but I do expect us to be able to defend corners reasonably well and not get caught by a ball over the top, the sort of thing that caused us a few problems in previous seasons. It's games against sides in Southampton's position which will define this season. Still, lessons learned and all that. I don't expect Liverpool to score four against us.

Yes I was referring to the next 2 away games at Liverpool and Man City
....yep....those two games might have a null points look to them....but man u and wolves don't... have a feeling in two weeks time.... tonight's blip won't matter....but it's dependant on the players regrouping....and our lot are good at that.

I think we could do worse than watch what Soton did so well tonight. That was a class performance by them, very incisive whenever they got on the ball, always forging forward. At the same time when we moved incisively we cut them open. But how many times did that happen? Not enough. My vote will be for Mads Roeslev as MOM with Bryan right behind.

I stayed away (a la Likely Lads) from all media this evening, waiting to watch at 10.30 (not 9.00 pm as previously advised by Sky). Turned on tv at 10.30. Waited for adverts to finish and then saw it had been put back to 11.00. ‘Sod that’, I thought. I have to be up early in the morning. I’ll just check the score and go to bed.

WTF? 4-1. Watched the goals on YouTube. 4 calamities! Great goal from Vitaly though. A horrible end to a not so great day. 😱

Roeslev MoM? Seriously? He was at fault for their first goal - which put us on the back foot - and passed backwards every time he got the ball. Very poor IMO.

We need a right back and a fit Rico Henry. It’s asking a bit much of Canos to play right wing back, right wing, then left wing back, he’s not up to it really. I thought we looked poor though, overall.
We have a RB and that is Roerslev. He improved after a shaky start and for me has done more than enough to take that place from Canos as the starter allowing Canos to focus on attacking.

I would also be dropping Fernandez for Lossl. May seem a bit knee jerk but we look shocking at defending crosses and I think it is partly due to his reluctance to come from crosses meaning the defence has too much to do causing panic

4 bad defensive miscues and that is what happens. Simple. Yes give Southampton their due but we made it way too easy for them. Still in a good spot in the table and next one can only be better, but some tough ones coming up and need to be better focused and get some more guys in.

I'm a fat f*** and even I think that I could of have had more energy than some of the boys tonight.

Anyway, we go on.

Haven't read through but I think the general consensus is that it was the worst 95 minutes so far in the PL. We couldn't deal with Soton's high press and the defending just fell apart, continually gifting the ball straight back. None of the players come out with any credit and it says something when Jensen comes on and actually presses their players in possession and plays the ball forward – quite a novelty given what went on beforehand.

Their early goal was a simple header, all too easy, and it set the tone, while out first (only?) attack with a decent cross tapped in by Janelt, who otherwise seemed a bit out of sorts. Their second was a case study of how not to defend – a ball is cleared from out penalty area; two players go out to the receiving player but neither closes when one should go tight and the other cover, so their player says 'thank you' and takes a shot that hits the post, then the 'keeper for an OG. The second half, we conspired to gift them two goals as they sat deeper and waited for our mistakes – which came aplenty.

There were players who had an off-day; players who just made a lot of errors (I think allowing Jansson to move on at the end of the season must be in plan); players who forgot the basics and, Canós, who is just not got the mind-set to be a defender... not his fault but he's being asked to do something he's not wired to do.

We can't be as bad as this again but it's clear fresh energy is needed, both from returning players and new recruits.

That was very poor tonight.
Trying to work out what we were actually trying to do - was it long ball, was it short , im really not sure, just no cohesion at all.
The worst defensive display i have seen for years.
Makes it worse that their goals werent even very good, poor defending for the first, bad luck off the post for the second, then just two hit and runs for the third and fourth.
When we play attacking, pressing football we look good, but tonight wasnt that.
We move on and go again.

Awful, BUT...
Mbuemo looking good.
Keep believing in Ivan
Janelt scored a cracker
Ajer back is a big plus
Henry back soon
JDS too hopefully
Jansson had a rare shocker.
Wissa will improve

I think we'll be ok.

WTF does Ghoddos have to do to get a game??

Otherwise
Love Sergi but I lost faith now.
Jensen - cheerio son.
Alvaro - all the best with your future mate
I’m not quite sure what Jensen did in this game to deserve that.

You have to give the opposition some credit. They played with a high tempo, their passing was crisp and they had the home fans right behind them the whole way through.

We weren’t going to have it all our own way and the first half didn’t surprise me that much. They were on the front foot but we gave away nothing from open play and actually scored a goal of our own. We were still in the game. Their two goals were both from set pieces which, whilst obviously frustrating, could be corrected in the second half.

The second half you are thinking “more of the same” and we will have a chance - but then we are caught out with a high line twice with simple balls cutting us open. Perhaps we were trying to be braver with Ajer back (giving us more pace in the back line) but you could tell he was just coming back from injury and Jansson was running through treacle.
A very accurate and well reasoned view.
We can still take them at BCS!

Mine is, Toney up front for Manchester City would have scored 25 goals by now. We're (understandably and obviously) not having the possession we had last season.
That is at the heart of it, no doubt.

In addition, Ivan is being man-marked, often double-marked, every single game. In response, he has clearly been told to drag his marker(s) all over the place, often deep, to create space for his teammates. Which in turn part-explains why the goals we do score are so spread out throughout the whole team. (Remember, too, that we're not getting so many penalties playing against better defences)

Imo, he needs support, even a rest, to help get his mojo back. And if/when he does, he'll prove his worth, since as we all (should) know:
"Form is temporary, Class is permanent."

That was actually the complete opposite of what I asked for on my birthday. B*llocks.
11 years ago we lost 2-1 to a last minute winner at Peterborough. It was in the middle of a run of winless matches that resulted in that 4-1 loss away at Dagenham!

If you can take anything out of it, at least we’re getting smashed in the PL now.

I didn’t think Baptiste or Janelt were on their game tonight - I was surprised to see so many votes for Janelt as man of the match, to be honest. Norgaard covered so much ground, but it was a case of having too as the other two were chasing shadows at times.

I didn’t think Ajer was helped by having Roerslev outside him. I think he (Roerslev) is a great prospect, but his over-caution made life very difficult for Ajer in trying to bring the ball out. He’s far better when Canos is over there, but poor Sergi is struggling on either side at the moment. Maybe the position has found him out a bit?

I thought Jansson was all over the place tonight - defensively and as a leader. Poorest of the season from him.

I understand the sentiments, but surely this sentence just shouldn't be a thing?

How on earth anyone can say we won't get relegated is beyond me. Performance tonight is irrelevant in me saying that also, even when we've looked good against better teams I've not once thought "well that's us safe". Pure naivety.
I disagree. We’ve still won more games than the bottom 3 combined. If we only get 10 more points this season, the bottom 3 will have to make up the equivalent of 8 more wins each to pass us. Not happening. Our early season points total has given us a massive buffer.

Outhought, outmuscled, outplayed.
A Second slow.
A yard off.
Uncomfortable on the ball.
Uncomfortable off the ball.
Tonight showed some of the line up to be out of their depth and just didn't want the ball.
Southampton knew from the first minute they had us exactly where they needed us and that was on the back foot.
They bullied us and we had no answer.
Poor is an understatement.
Awful a better description.

Safe to say we’re finding it tough on the road now. No win since West Ham and no clean sheet since Wolves. Quality on the ball and decision making very poor. We genuinely struggled to string 3 passes together tonight and lost every 50/50.

I get that the 3-5-2 formation is a means to an end. Gives us more defensive cover and keeps 3 in the middle of midfield. Against the big boys it’s allowed us to frustrate them. But we’ve let goals galore in against poor sides:

Norwich x2
Leeds x2
Newcastle x3
Burnley x3
Southampton x4

What’s happened to us enjoying defending and wanting to do the dirty work. Feels like every cross or long ball is going to end up in our net.

Only positive was getting home before midnight.

Poor all round, no one played well. Pontus was woeful (but I’ll let him off as he’s played well this year), canos non existent and as for Toney up front Jesus Christ. Keeper’s time is surely up, appears to be so slow to get down to things and lack of presence in box causing us all sorts of issues.

Let’s face it we haven’t played well since Chelsea (actually maybe leeds away). We will stay up but more down to worse teams than us than us being excellent. Somehow got 9 points from poor performances against Villa, Everton and Watford. Feel we need a fair few newbies in summer to stay in league again.

Southampton are a mid table team with a very very good player in ward prowse. Disappointment is to not to lay a glove on them imo. We are so congested in the middle, watch every game and the switch/diagonal is always on. We used to love it with jota and benrahma, but now it rarely occurs. Different formation granted but the wing backs are just not getting forward enough to offer this. Also one big thing we lack is pace. If we had anyone with outstanding pace we would look a better side (not only up top but on wings too). Needs to be an area to look at surely? Not sure one player in our team would of done what theirs did for the third.

Anyway tin hats ready for Liverpool

We have conceded the first goal in 13 of our last 14 PL games.

THAT is an issue.
Nah. If it wasn't for a £104,000 loan from Ron Blindell in 1967 we'd be Queens Park Rangers. THAT was an issue. Conceding first in the Premier League against the best teams in the world doesn't cut it for me on the issue front. ;)

Nope. Try as I might, you're going to have to break this down for me.
Sorry was typing as walking out. What I meant was 'what has happened to the Toney that terrorized the Wolves defence a few months ago'

Just finished watching the game again ( live and on TV).

I had hoped our win at Vale, with the Saints eagerness to postpone, would galvanise us....

Our first half performances are shocking. We seem to invite pressure from the off. Although we do tend to rectify this was far better seconds, it does mean we will sometimes lose games by HF.

Just because he’s the skip, and has been a hugely influential figure, doesn’t mean Pontus is immune from criticism. I’ve said it before, he seems to lose all concentration at times and chases after the ball without considering the opposition. I think it’s because he wants to lead everyone else, sometimes forgets himself. That third goal ( although it shouldn't have been one vs one) was behind criminal.

Ivan really is cutting a frustrated figure. Was very lucky not to Be off. Wissa must be sniffing a starting place perhaps.

At the end of the day, a lot of teams on their day will beat us. If they’re playing to their full Capabilities. We will win some, we will lose some.

So proud of the boys, and will continue to be so! However, I do think there are underlying concerns that continue to fester
