Southend United handed winding-up order from HM Revenue and Customs

Southend United have received a fresh winding-up order from HM Revenue and Customs over financial difficulties stretching back a decade.

The League One club faces a fresh High Court showdown with tax officials almost two years to the day since a judge threw out a bid on the basis that the owner had cleared debts.

During 10 years of financial instability, Southend were dealt around 10 winding up attempts by the taxman. Fans had hoped the club's financial outlook had improved since the club were last hit with a court summons in 2015.

In a new petition, the Gazette official public record website recorded that a new bid by HMRC, "claiming to be Creditors of the Company", will be heard at the High Court on Feb 6.

I hope my hometown club survive all of this. In the early 50's I remember going past the old Stadium which was also a greyhound track.

Apparently the last game played there was Brentford being beaten 3 2.

I clearly remember the move to Roots Hall, but only went there once or twice having been taken by my uncle who was visiting from Manchester.

Southend United are responsible for me being a Brentford supporter. In 1971 (I think) Southend were playing at Brentford and I thought I would go to the game. I was taken in by Brentford who won the match 4 2. A Bees supporter ever since. I think Ken Jones was playing for Southend that day. My memory of him was that a few years earlier he was a prefect at my school and me, a few years younger.

I think it was the ECFC Chairman that told their fans that.

Yep I believe that is correct when he got some flack over the fee they received.

Ollie said in the press conference that we were the only club he seriously considered because we had been trying to get him for 12-18 months prior to actually signing him, he liked that. Leeds were in the reckoning as were Forest and Villa, Bristol City expressed an interest but then looked elsewhere.

I remember MacLaren before last season was asked on Sky Sports to pick his '3 Championship players he thought would shine that year' and he put Watkins as one of those. Didn't realised he'd been so interested. He clearly had a lot of faith in him.

And so it goes on....

Southend United issued with new winding-up petition as financial problems continue

Southend United have been issued with yet another winding-up petition by HM Revenue and Customs, reports BBC Essex.

The Shrimpers have been dealt a series of winding-up petitions - including one earlier this year - over the course of a decade.

Their financial problems have continued and the new petition is due to be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice on 16 October.

Not only in financial trouble.

Lost at home to Accrington Stanley today and only have KT Dons and minus nine Bolton behind them.

SOUTHEND United have been hit by two more charges by the Football League.

The Shrimpers have been issued with a second misconduct charge after failing to pay their players on time for February.

And they have also been hit by a further charge for fielding an ineligible player in the 2-1 victory against Lincoln City at the start of February.

A statement on the EFL website said: "Southend United has been issued with a second misconduct charge for non-payment of players, alongside a further charge for fielding an ineligible player.

That'll be a points deduction for the ineligible player then.

Interesting that they have a problem caused by ineligible player in Lincoln game. As they haven't been able to sign anyone, it could only be a youngster from their youth system I assume. All thos players have played since that Lincoln game too, so probably a timing misunderstanding.

I imagine we have a sell on for yearwood, perhaps we can try and do a deal considering their predicament, similar to what we did for big ears

Looked at the local Southend paper article about Mark Philips having the virus (see his thread). Also an article elsewhere in the same paper that at long last the go ahead from the local council for revised plans for new stadium can now be submitted. 14K rising to 21k if required in the future.

They had the go ahead years ago but were so slow starting that they have tried to change plans time and again which the council couldn’t fully approve as they are trying to regenerate the seafront with similar venues as the football ground site wanted. So keeping people out of town. It’s now been slimmed down with new housing rather than entertainment venues.

"A winding-up petition against Southend United over an unpaid tax bill has been adjourned for a second time.

HM Revenue & Customs agreed to put it back until 22 July after the League One club argued the coronavirus crisis had delayed a refinance plan."

Southend winding-up petition adjourned
And 6 months later, the owner finally coughs up:
Southend United pay up £493,991 tax bill as winding-up petition dismissed
Southend United pay up £493,991 tax bill

Meanwhile, if I were building their new ground, I'd want cash up front before I put a spade in the ground:
Southend United: Deal struck for long-awaited new stadium

I won’t shed any tears if they go down.
In fact it wouldn’t bother me if they went bust.
I’ve got a long memory.
And it’s an absolute khazi of a town.

😂😂😂 Definitely will do. I'm game for another crack at the railway tavern. Third time lucky...remind my to tell you about the 2nd time in the FA cup. 3 of us on 30 of them seemed like a good idea at the time 😂

In hindsight we should have adopted a more defensive formation that day, Instead of the opting for all out attacking strategy we employed. 😆

Stan Collymore tweeted that he's meeting with Ron Martin, owner of Southend to discuss sale with backed by consortium. It will be difficult, because Martin owns the ground and also the land for new site for new ground. I can see a rip off from another Ron around the corner!!

Good luck in non-league - will always despise them after their fans displays after the LDV semi-final 1st leg and after we lost 4-1 there in 2006

My first away game back in the 70's, learnt a lot about football that day along with playing hide'n'seek.
