Wasn't he quite rubbish even when at his best?
Another example of a player stealing a living letting everybody else do the running for him, him & Bamford are the last of the old school forwards. No place in modern football but Bristol City clearly have no idea how to move forward if you look at some of their other signings for this season.

O'Neillm is much cleverer/more flexible than that.

If you look at the NI team which got to Euro2016 Finals, their best players were nearly all defenders - McAuley, Hughes, Brunt, Evans and Cathcart. Accordingly, the team was set up to defend deep, keep a clean sheet and hope to win with a goal from a breakaway or set-piece etc. He usually played 4 at the back, but was prepared to move to 3-5-2, or even 5-4-1, depending on the opposition

But when the first three of those retired after the tournament and he had no like-for-like replacements, he concentrated instead on new young, ball-playing midfielders who were breaking through, which necessitated a much more possession-based, pressing style. They came within an ace of qualifying for World Cup 2018 playing that way.

Now it may be that the squad he's inherited at Stoke is more suited to negative, defensive tactics and I think their FFP position means they need to move players on, rather than spend money on new ones.

But make no mistake, O'Neill is a very capable manager, as his record in saving them last season, when they looked dead and buried under Jones, demonstrates.
No one said he was not capable. I simply making the point ably demonstrates by their escape of his go to tactic. He now does not have young ball playing players to pick from a variety of clubs just his squad. They will play a la Cardiff

That’s harsh on Bamford who’s actually extremely hard working just not a great finisher of chances.

I hate to say it as it goes against “philosophy” but if there’s truly no way through against some opposition, bus truly parked, having an old bruiser come on for the last 20 mins might be an acceptable plan B?
No way. That logic says ‘okay guys let’s spend all our time on the training ground refining our one touch approach but if we have not scored in 70 minutes we just revert to booting it up front for the tall fat bloke’

Do you think so? he just seems to wander around with no great enthusiasm or goes down trying to win a free kick. Leeds last season with a more mobile front man would have had the league sewn up well before lockdown.

If he wasn't he wouldn't be in a Bielsa team FACT. He was sh*t often, but does close down early and defend from the front. I know he's disliked by many and I agree he's overrated, but again reiterate, Bielsa doesn't do lazy players.

100% , some laughable comments previously bearing in mind Bielsa was picking him every game!

Maybe it's just termnology ("stealng") but I can't see it that way.

"Stealing" is when you cheat/coerce/exploit someone - I don't imagine Martin has ever held a gun to anyones head to secure a transfer.

If an owner or DoF is stupid enough to offer him a better contract than his ability merits, or a Coach picks him to perform an ineffective or outdated role, then that's down to them.

Or do you really expect a player to say: "You know what, I'm not really that good, so thanks for the offer, but no thanks. I'm off now to earn my living driving a cab. Might play a bit of non-League at the weekend." ?

Look at the difference between Watkins & Martin, one works his socks off for the team & the other just does his bit when the opportunity arises, The latter is "stealing" a living in my book by letting his team-mates do all the work.

In my book it's the manager who tolerates this who's "stealing" (from his employer).

I mean, if eg Ollie had the same lazy attitude, would Thomas F tolerate it?

And if he did, would Rasmus tolerate it in him?

I know, just in my limited brain I can’t figure out any way through in some games 😂 guess that’s why I’m here and not there

If your job is to be the big lad up top to knock it into to tap in it’s not stealing a living if you just do that. The only players stealing a living are those like say Rodwell or McCormick who for whatever reason let themselves fall out with their clubs to the extent they’re not even considered for selection, get told to go and train on their own and still pocket more in a week than the average fan earns in a year. Being a bit crap or just a bit limited doesn’t mean you aren’t working hard to still keep on getting picked.

Chris Martin is very good indeed at ambling about chewing gum with his arse sticking out & then falling over whenever an opponent approaches him.

The irony is that I don't think he is a player Lee Johnson would like. I thought binning him off was looking to next step. Maybe they might go for bullying their way into the top 6 then

A goal kick from Harrow Borough FC
On the subject of veterans, though this one pulls his weight. My old favourite Kevin Ellison has switched to Newport on a 1 year deal. The curtains must be starting to twitch, if not yet actually coming down on his career....

Wolves just spent £35M on Fabio Silva who has scored 1 first team goal for Porto from 12 games. He has just turned 18 in July. Yes he played at all level up to u19 for Portugal x5, and 32 at younger levels scoring 17 goals but £35M WOW

I prefer Mogensens goal vid for Brentford B

There's a few players like him, ones who wound us up when we regularly played against them but ones who continue to play professional football, clearly because they just enjoy playing. You've got to admire them.

Izzy Brown to Sheff Wed, been around a lot but a good player, good stats last season for Luton in the games he played
Suffered a bad injury at GP in their 7-0 defeat, which took out a long period, but he had been playing well in a struggling team.

AFCB accept a £20m offer from Newcastle for Callum Wilson, Villa were interested as well, but as is their way of signing players they offered a lot less.

I’m guessing that he must be credibly being seen as the next Cristiano Ronaldo (3 goals in 25 appearances as a 17 year old for Sporting Lisbon). Even CR7 didn’t start banging them in as metronomically as we’re used to until his 4th season at Man U. Still a pretty decent buy for them!

Chris Brunt to Bristol City, they seem to be putting together a side capable of earning a stultifyingly boring home 0-0 draw with us.

Yeah I didnt know his record against us was that good, but I do always think “oh no not him again”
Like I used to think whenever Eric Nixon was in goal for Tranmere.

I see Swansea have sold Bersant Celina to Dijon. He always seems to be a dangerous player to me, so glad he's gone.

I see more loans going in at Swansea, if I was one of their fans I would be going crazy about not developing our young players

Seems they have a decent chance of getting Brewster back which would be a game changer. I know people used to make the same complaint about us (Loanford etc) but it just doesn’t seem right if they get promoted on the basis of half a team of loan players.

Andy Scott's in charge of player recruitment there isn't he?

Regardless, maybe as a club they don't have a quality model below first team like we do. It also takes time to develop one...

Looks like Spurs could be getting Garet Bale on loan.

Impressive work from Mr Levy if it happens

Think they need more than an ageing and demotivated bale to sort them out, theyve looked pretty awful for a while now but will be good to see bale back if he is up for it

Norwich rejecting a £20m bid from Barcelona for Max Aarons after rejecting another offer from Liverpool earlier in the transfer window. Not sure what the player is making of this he could be in the same team as Messi but more than likely playing Championship football this year.

I read the other day Real Madrid are paying him £600000, absolutely immoral
Real were complete mugs to offer him that. No player is worth that much a week. Even with Spurs paying half his wage they still paying in £300k a week. That is over £11m for the season (9 months) to finish 6th.
