I’m trying that tactic too now. I now see burns as a nightwatchman from the night before where any runs he gets are a little bonus. If he’s out for 0 he’s just a Fulham ****. If he gets a few, great.

For me it is just about watching the game and enjoying it.

Perhaps for the third test, England could agree to start 10-2 and open the batting with Root and Malan. Would stop the unnecessary pantomime of Hameed and Burns.

Lyon will be a big factor tomorrow. Can see him picking up a few wickets. The only small positive for England at the close is that Root is still there.

A bit harsh on Hameed I think - he has a good technique and is worth persevering with IMO. Burns on the other hand can do one!

Of course it is a positive - he came into bat in the first test first innings after 3.2 overs and this time after 6.2 over and he was out 1st test after 5.5 over. If that is not a progress I don’t know what is
I’ve only seen the wickets but it looked as though Burns got a very good delivery whereas Hameed chipped an innocuous delivery to mid on.
It wasn’t always going to be tough facing the new ball under lights but I actually think the first two sessions tomorrow will be good for batting. England need to cash in and be no more than 5 wickets down at tea tomorrow.

Just glanced over to Twitter and calls for Bairstow to come back into the test side. There lies the problem with England test teams, both Bairstow and Butler have consistently failed for England (some may comment they have been stealing a living playing test cricket) and in Bairstow instance he becomes a better player when not playing. I do get the argument whom else is out there - I don’t have the in-depth knowledge of county cricket to answer this. But if Labuschagne was English and playing as he does for Glamorgan would he be selected by England?
Would rather give Livingstone a go at test cricket than select Bairstow again.

I still remember Duncan Fletcher having a ‘hunch’ about Marcus Trescothick. Turned out really well. Let’s see how this series turns out but one would expect there to be changes, not only in the playing staff.
I agree,it’s really strange that Burns hasn’t been coached to eliminate the rotating bat coming into the ball.Your timing has to be spot on to make this work,and against top Test bowlers it’s almost impossible.

The thing with Hameed is that defensively he is sound. What he lacks more than anything is shots to get the scoreboard moving.
I must admit I was completely wrong about Alistair Cook. I called for him to be dropped. Whilst he had a relative poor last couple of years and I felt his time as a test cricketer was up, he probably still is the best opener England have got and in hindsight he probably retired too early.

Buttlers body language in the field was poor and you can see his confidence is shot. He'll be dropped in this series and retire from red ball cricket.
I also reckon Silverwood will be axed after this series and Root will step down as captain.

Well last time we were at Adelaide. We were 8 for 5 (side note being the only 2 English people in our block wasnt fun!) and Woakes got 78. As that was an ODi he wont have to chase runs either.
