It’s strange when you analyse the batting but we have played all the best county batsmen that the cricket press have championed who have got their selection through runs.
Burns
Sibley
Pope
Lawrence
Jennings before them.

Cricket goes in generations Stokes and Root the cornerstones have another 4-5 years at this.
Pope is the future everyone agrees he just needs to get rid of the brain freeze.

Australia aren't at the levels from 15 - 20 years ago but at home you have to be good like India last time out to put them under.

Root to keep the score ticking and Stokes to play himself in if possible and have a tilt will give this game some pulse. If England go one day mode on this to get runs on the board then the Aussies will sweat. Headingley 2019 was not that long ago with Cummins, Hazelwood Lyon, Smith and Warner all watching the ball disappear over their head there are mental scars that can be reopened if Stokes has his day tomorrow And Joe gets his deserved ton in Australia.

That’s the spirit.

Hopefully selfish Buttler will come in and score 65 in 20 balls. (He really reminds me of KP two away Ashes ago when he never cared about the match situation, like he was playing beach cricket. Holing out for 3 in the over before tea first innings sums Buttler up. See that stumping he missed last night too?! Harris was about ten foot out of his crease! Bah I’ve gone all negative. Come on England.

Yes, Foakes would have made that stumping and no one will tell me otherwise.

Yeah, absolutely.
And I do still hold out some hope.
I had the same hope following the Watford game, where I was really looking forward to the commentary on my way back that night, as Root and Malan were batting, and we looked like we could put up a fight......
I know it's become a cliche now, but it really is the hope that kills you.....

The cricket will go fine but it will be the A303 that let's you down.

All PCR tests have come back as negative from both camps. Good News. Although Stuart Broad wants a review (last line a joke)

My son and I were just going through the openers since Strauss (2012). Two things - there has been I think 18 and they have generally been sh*t - how good was Alastair Cook?

If you are going on runs scored he's the best.

I am completely fed up with the “batsmans that can keep” policy. The only time it worked was Prior who improved beyond expectations to be a reasonable keeper. It hasn’t worked since for England.

I saw this the other day which is very revealing. Not only is Foakes the best wicket keeper in England but averages more than any other debutant for England in the last 6 years.

Averages of England batters to debut in men's Test cricket in the last six years:

Foakes: 31.53
Burns: 30.92
Malan: 30.35
Pope: 29.79
Denly: 29.53
Sibley: 28.94
Hales: 28.26
Hameed: 27.80
Crawley: 27.74
Stoneman: 27.68
Lawrence: 27.23
Jennings: 25.19
Vince: 24.90
Westley: 24.12

I can't bear to watch, but me being the gluten for punishment will stick with it.

You can’t give that out. But Bairstow deserved that for that first ball shot in the over when he was dropped.

Seriously, f*** off umpires you can't give that. Same with Malan yesterday. Benefit of the doubt is always with the batsman.

Two wickets in this innings when a decent umpire should never ever give out. Malan and Bairstow.

Immediate thought of anyone looking at that in real time would be that it did not hit in line. Presume umpires are Aussies! :(

Correct, the umpire couldn’t be sure and should have given them both not out.If the Aussies had reviewed ,both would have been umpires call and not out.

Exactly. He was second guessing and the appeal behind the stumps was half hearted.

Both given by the same umpire as well I believe. He looked a bit sheepish after Bairstows unsuccessful review

Honestly wasn’t expecting this. Take away Bairstow wicket it’s been another horror show.

Didn't someone mention an innings and 17 run defeat?
