We're coming to the end of our tenure at Griffin Park and I'd thought it would be useful to track how much it cost to get in to the old place over the years. I've made a start via Google sheets but can anyone fill in the - substantial - gaps. The prices refer to the admission on matchday, not discounted members etc tickets in the days leading up. eBay has been a decent source of information but let's see if we can fill this chart in.

We'll also have to factor in category A B C games. I do remember we started doing something similar in 1990/91 and the club charging the highest category for a home game against Chester which caused a bit of uproar!

What is incredible is that I can't access how much this season's matchday tickets are on the Brentford FC website unless you click on an individual match in the fixtures. There doesn't seem to be any information available for first time visitors, which is surprising.

I remember paying 1s and 6d to stand in the New Road stand as a youth. It was 3d to leave your bike in the corner house of Brook Road

In the 50's it was the old 3d to leave your bike there and 6d for a child and 2 shillings for adult admission to the Royal Oak end, Braemar Rd however was 2 shillings & 6d for adults and 9d for children.

For the youngsters 3d = about 1.5np 6d 2.5np 2shillings 10np 9d about 4.5np and 2& 6 12.5 new pence

Oh yes and programmes were 4d = nearly 2np

When I started going in 1952. My Grandad and I always stood behind the goal at the Royal Oak end. The admission was 1/9d = (9p) for men and 9d = (4p) for boys. That's what it said above the gates.I don't think women and girls were supposed to attend football in those days :) :) . Three sides of the ground could be accessed from there and IIRC there was a small gate that you could pay extra and go into the Braemar side of the ground to sit or stand.

2/6d rings a bell from when I first went in 1964. I think that was the adult price with 1/3d for juniors... not entirely sure that 2/6d wasn't the junior price and 5/- for adults, but think it was the lower figures

Can remember getting 2/6d pocket money, which got me there and back on the bus from Northolt, entrance to Royal Oak end, a program, bovril and hot dog and of course a bag of peanuts, also a bag of chips on the way home.

Like Bee4ever I used to stand behind the Royal Oak goal. My first game was v Bradford City 60 years ago almost to the day on 23rd August 1958 as a 10 year old, admission was still 9d as above (don't know what adults paid) and programme 4d. Travel was on the 655 trolleybus, 2d fare each way. Following season admission for boys went up to 1/-.

Thank you isn’t good enough! Top work Paul. :sorted:

What shocked me after doing some research was junior seat tickets in certain sections were £13 in the late 90s.

Just wondering Paul, where the info came from regarding the admission price to Braemar in 1952/3 ( the first full season I attended ) As I said in an earlier post, admission to Royal Oak end was 1/9d (maybe had increased to 2/- by the start of the 52/3 season.) TOMOGP has said it was 2/6d to go into Braemar at that time, which I agree with. So the amount of 7/6d seems incredibly high relatively. A programme then was 3d. So 30x programme price. If it cost 30x programme price to get into Braemar today you would be looking at £105 a seat.
I'm just wondering that's all, not trying in any way to be confrontational, because I think you do a brilliant job in your research, especially the work you do regarding fallen ex Brentford players.Being ex-service myself it has special significance. :)

It's a ticket from the FA Cup tie v Aston Villa, 1952/53. Were prices increased for this match?

A ticket from April 1952 (season 1951/52) was "only" 5/-.

Brentford v Barnsley - 12 April 1952 a.jpg

As I said, I'll need to check the programmes to see if entrance fees were mentioned.

I have a spare 5 minutes Mr C.

1946/47 Ground 1/3 (Ealing Road and New Road?). Brook Road Enclosure 1/6. Braemar Road Enc. 2/-. Stands; A & G “wing” 3/6. Block A & G 4/-. Block B & F 4/6. Reserved seats 5/-.

More to follow.......

I would say 1947/48 is the same as above. Programme states that STs - limited availability - are £5 5s 0d, same as 1946/47.

Thanks for posting that Paul :) I cannot be certain if prices were increased for the Villa game . I was at that match as a 10 year old with my Grandad. We always stood behind the goal at Royal Oak but for some reason my Grandad decided that we were going to sit in Braemar for that game. He was not the richest of people but never missed a home game and I remember he said to me "This is a special game so we will treat ourselves" Villa were a top first division side then and we were second division, We had gained a creditable 0-0 draw the previous Saturday at Villa Park. There would have not been much opportunity to advertise a price increase, so maybe that was the standard adult price.Although tickets were issued on admittance for specific seats in Braemar it was still pay on the day. Except for seated season ticket holders.

@Bee4ever

The ticket prices shown so far, for 1940’s and 1950’s, seem to be for the “expensive” reserved seats.
As 1946/47 shows, after checking admission prices in the programme just now, Braemar Road has a range of prices.
The ticket I have shown for 1946/47, and later seasons to 1952, is 5/-. This was reserved seating.

Mostly the same, standing anyway, but the posh seats rose in price.

My 1st game was 18/9/1948 against West Bromwich Albion and a thrilling ! 0-0 draw in front of a 28k crowd I was taken in New road and given my 9d to go through the boys gate

I was hooked even with a 0-0 sad lol

I have shown above a 5/- price for Block A, I wonder if this was “on the day” unreserved seat price?

Also, prices quoted in recent posts, from 1946/47, are adult admission, no mention of child prices. Were they half price? But that would make New Road 7d and a farthing! So 9d could be right?!

Aha! Mr A H Gibbons in 1950 started to get things on track. However, the wing blocks had their letters changed. ;)

1950/51 Ground 1/3 (Ealing Road and New Road?) & Boys 9d. Brook Road Enclosure 2/-. Boys 1/-. Braemar Road Enc. 2/-. Boys 1/-. Stands; X & Y “wing” 4/-. Block A & G 4/6. (When reserved 5/-). Block B (numbered and reserved) & F 6/-.

A few changes to 1952/53. Price increases too.

1952/53 Ground 1/9 (Brook Road and Ealing Road) & Boys 9d. New Road Enclosure 2/-. Boys 1/-. Brook House Enc. (behind goal) 2/6. Boys 1/-. Braemar Road Enc. 3/-. Boys 1/-. Stands; X & Y “wing” 5/-. Block A & G 6/3. (When reserved 5/-). Block B (numbered and reserved) & F 7/6.

Why was Brook Road an extra 9d to stand behind the goal?! A little odd that one. rebus?!

A specific note re New Road. Those wishing to use New Road cannot transfer to any other part of the ground. All those wishing to use New Road are to enter via four new turnstiles, installed to cope with numbers.

Reserves were; whole ground 1/3. Boys 6d. Braemar Road Enc. 1/9. Boys 9d. All seats 2/6.

ps I hope I’m on commission, we’ll royalties at least, for providing this vital historical & social info Mr C?!

Annoyingly, A H Gibbons left Brentford!!

No admission prices quoted for 1953/54 in the trial match programme.

Nothing in later programmes either. :(

I’m failing here.......

Here we have something, The FA Cup tie v Hull City Jan 1953.

No standing or boys prices......
Braemar Road; Wings X & Y 5/-. Stands A & G 6/3. Stands B & F 7/6. ST stands C 7/6. D 7/-. E 6/6.

Therefore, admission the same as 1952/53? More than likely. :)

Relegation to Div 3 (South) meant some seat prices were lowered.

1954/55 Ground 1/9 (Ealing Road?) & Boys 9d. New Road Enclosure 2/-. Boys 1/-. Brook Road Enc. 2/-. Boys 1/-. Braemar Road Enc. 3/-. Boys 1/-. Stands; X & Y “wing” 4/-. Block A & G 5/-. Block B & F 6/-.

Reserves; ground 1/-. Boys 6d. Braemar Road Enc. 1/6. Boys 9d. Seats extra 6d.

The Football League ruled that a ‘minimum’ price of admission had to be fixed at 2/-. :grey:

1955/56 Ground 2/- (Ealing Road) & Boys 1/-. New Road Enclosure 2/3. Boys 1/-. Brook Road Enc. 2/6. Boys 1/-. Braemar Road Enc. 3/-. Boys 1/-. Stands; X & Y “wing” 4/-. Block A & G 5/-. Block B & F 6/-.

The LCC final tie v QPR, prices were; ground 1/6. Boys 9d. Braemar Road Enc. 2/6. Boys 1/-. Seats were an extra 1/-.

Thanks Paul. Interesting people were confined to New Road etc - I thought you could move all around the ground until the late 1970s?

I think it was for the best! Especially the characters that frequented the place, even now! Although I stood on New Road in the 1980’s. It took me years to realise, then went over to Braemar, oh dear. :(

Annoyingly, 1956/57 is also lacking in admission details. :(

The only reference re admission prices is for the FA Cup tie v Guildford and also Palace.

“Prices of admission as for league matches and reserved seats will be available at 5/- and 6/-. ST holders, Block E 5/-, Block D 5/6, Block C 6/-.

1957/58 follows suit. Lacking any info on ticket prices. :(

1958/59 once again, lacking admission prices.

However, there is a note for @rebus. ;)

“The barrier at the Brook Road end of the New Road enclosure has been removed. The Board have made this alteration at the request of many supporters. It does mean, however, that admission to League matches through Brook Road entrance will be 2/3, but supporters will now be able to gain access to the centre of the “popular side” through both Brook Road and New Road. Because of this alteration the 2/- admission to the ground will be at Ealing Road only.”

The FA Cup tie v King’s Lynn had Seat prices at the same scale as 1956/57 prices. :)

1959/60 seems to follow suit as the previous seasons. :(

The FA Cup prices seem to be the same as recent seasons. Block C 6/-. Block D 5/6. Block E 5/-. Block A 5/- and Block B 6/-.

“Stand prices increase by 6d.”
Stand X 4/6. Stand A & G 5/6. Stand B & F 6/6.
Boys 1/3 to the ground. 1/6 to Braemar Road Enc.

There are two prices for Brook Road. Was there an fenced off area directly behind the goal at a higher price?

I don’t know! I’ve never heard of Brook Road being split before. Very odd. Anyone remember what the difference was? Brook Road Enc and Brook House Enc (behind goal). It seemed to continue for a few seasons. Anyone remember that part being called Brook House enclosure?

Its an odd one this. I stood with my grandad directly behind the Brook Road goal every home game for 4 seasons 1952 to 1956. Grandad's health failed then ( he had been badly wounded at the Somme in 1916 ) and he was unable to attend any more so I went on my own and stood in New Road with mates. At no stage can I recall there being a separate enclosure in Brook Road, we always got into Brook Road an hour before kick off so I could get directly behind the goal at the front.grandad stood about 3 rows back. I have never heard of Brook House enclosure. As I have said earlier, I clearly remember the sign above the gate 1/9d for men and 9d for boys. This ties in with what WP says in post # 35.

Continuing on. It gets very patchy from 1961/62 onwards regarding admission prices.

1961/62 Brook Road, Brook House (?), New Road & Ealing Road 3/-. Boys 1/6.
Braemar Road Enc. 4/-. Boys 2/-.
“Stand prices increase by 6d.”
Stand (Wings) X 5/-. Stand A & G 6/-. Stand B & F 7/-.

1962/63 More than likely as above.

1963/64 More than likely as above. The FA Cup tie mentions A & B Stands the same as 1961/62.

1964/65 A note in a friendly programme; "London Clubs to introduce minimum ground admission charge of 4/-."

Ealing Road, Brook Road & New Road 4/-. Boys 2/-. Braemar Road Enc. 5/-. Boys 2/6.
Stands; A 7/-. B 8/-. C 8/6. D 7/6. E 6/6.

1965/66 More than likely as above. Prices for FA Cup ties match those from 1964/65.

1966/67 More than likely as above. Prices for FA Cup ties match those from 1964/65.

1967/68 "New Admission Prices."
Ealing Road 4/-. Boys 2/-. New Road & Brook Road 5/-. Boys 2/6. Braemar Road Enc. 6/-. Boys 3/-.
Stands; A 8/-. B 9/-. C 10/-. D 9/-. E 8/-.

1968/69 Same as 1967/68? Possibly. However, FA Cup prices for the Stands were; C 8/6. D 7/6. E 6/6.

1969/70 Same as 1967/68? Possibly. However, FA Cup prices for the Stands were; C 8/-. D 7/6. E 7/-.

That's the 1960's done. :)

1970's.

1970/71 Same as 1967/68? Possibly. However, FA Cup prices for the Stands were; C 10/-. D 9/-. E 8/-.

1971/72 Annoyingly, no admission prices shown. This would've been the first year for Pounds & Pence, decimalisation.

1972/73 Finally! New prices shown on a friendly team sheet.
Ealing Road, New Road & Brook Road 40p. Juniors 20p. Braemar Road Enc. 50p. Juniors 25p. Transfer to Stands via Braemar; From 5p to 20p. OAP's 20p inc seat in Stand G.

1973/74 The only reference is a quote as follows; "New ground prices. Adult increased by 5p. Juniors and OAPs, same as last season."

1974/75 Nothing. Zilch. Nada. :(

1975/76 No mention of Ground admission prices. There is a mention for the FA Cup matches and the stands. Block B £1.00. Block C £1.20. Block D £1.15. Block E £1.10.

1976/77 Nothing.

1977/78 New Prices.

Brook Road, Ealing Road and New Road 80p. Juniors 40p. Braemar Road Enc. 90p. Juniors 50p.

In Addition to Braemar prices; Stands X & Y +25p. A +30p. B + 40p. C +60p. D +55p. E +50p. F +40p. G +30p.

1978/79 Nothing.

1979/80 A note in a Friendly programme says; "No longer a reduced admission charge for Juniors on a match-day." "Introducing a privilege ST for Under 16 & OAPs at £10."

OAPs Braemar Road Stand G 50p. Juniors for FA Cup ties 50p. Ground £1.20 Adults. Enclosure £1.30.

1970's sort of done!
