To be fair, they have actually won the league once. It is just that it is a long time since they were one of the top clubs. Those who remember Forest and Villa winning European Cups will also remember Ipswich being right up there challenging at the top of the old First Division too.
Yes, I remember those days, but then I am in my 50's. ;)

From one of the Arsenal sites.
Good to see us getting recognition from some Premier League fans

Started to get that from scousers after the Swindon play-off. Before that our glorious name mainly came up to denigrate Everton.

Interesting that Jody Morris (assistant to Derby County's Frank Lampard) says he's watched Brentford over the last couple of years and that we've built over that time to the team we are now... and he really likes watching us.

Let's hope we can make it a game that he really likes as we stuff them!

Yesterday’s EFL Matters was a total Brentford love in from Wigan Chairman Duncan Sharpe and Prutton and Hinchliffe.

“Best team we’ve played “

“Superb team”

“Watkins bound for the Premier League “

“Fantastic job done by DS”

Etc etc.

Proud but it all worries me and raises expectations

Was disappointed to hear him defend the parachute payment system though.

NTT20 playing the biscuit game again, admittedly before Tuesday's damp squib.

They were quite critical of us, or rather DS, this week, questioning whether we had an elite manager to match our elite squad (appreciate he’s a head coach but that’s semantics IMO).

They were particularly scathing of the decisions to drop Konsa for Derby, to keep bringing on Judge and to keep taking off Benrahma.

For context, they’re normally overwhelmingly positive and complete get and understand what we’re about.

Smith may not be ‘elite’, he is no Guardiola, he has strengths and weaknesses like most coaches, but he is a good fit for us. I think most of us would agree that we have an imperfect mix of player styles in midfield. I think NTT20 have backed themselves into a corner a bit by heavily tipping us to do well. As gambling types, they are understandably a bit in awe of Matthew. Like some of us, they would do well to remember just what a large budget disadvantage we are working against.

We're still only 9 games in, and 3 points off top. We'd take being 3 points off top with 3 games to go so if we carry on doing well we may well match their prediction. There will be turns on the way though...

Benrhama is settling still, and has looked very tired in games he's played 90 minutes in by the end. Konsa was a decision that probably didn't pay off, but was likely as a result of the fixture congestion. The Judge one unfortunately it's hard to defend much...

The Huntley & Palmers biscuit factory was where Thames Valley Park, at the end of the A329(M), is today; at one point it was the world's largest biscuit factory. I used to work in the offices at TVP. When RFC played at the old Elm Park, they were called the biscuit men.

A very bitter Brum fan in the comments section of the Championship roundup...
It's not surprising. We are getting such toxic refereeing against us this season I really wonder what the League has told refs. 8 minutes of injury against Leeds, 8 against Brentford tonight. The standard this season is utterly woeful.

And I don't usually comment on opposition players in the negative, but I have to make an exception for Neal Maupay. Dived to get Kieftenbeld sent off, then held his face after he grabbed Harlee Dean's leg to get him sent off. The ref didn't fall for that one, but he did book Dean because ref. An utter disgrace. But then again he summed up Brentford's approach. The most snidey, niggly, divey team this season by a very long way. If that's what Moneyball gets you then the game needs rethinking.

This sentence shows just how much Maupay wound them up and I enjoyed reading it, especially as it has no basis in reality :)

Don't know why they think they're so special. The last few games we've been dragged into a scrap and this silly business but it's either that or roll over. I really would like to see them in league one so we don't hear their deluded egotistical nonsense anymore. 15 point deduction please!

Unfortunately, the Championship is stuffed with clubs from the black-and-white glory days that have a fair chunk of deluded, "if only we spent more money", fans.

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but I still can't fathom how, despite how superior we've been to them over tje last 5 years and the 7-0 aggregate last season after they bought our "best 3 players", BrumScum fans still give it the big 'un about the fact they've got a better team than us!!! I could almost forgive them if it was merely the "we're a bigger club than you" *****, but to keep going on about the merits of the 2 teams really is incredible!!! rofl

Dinner with a WBA and a Fulscum fan tonight and both very complimentary about our club and the style of football we play. Both want us to go up and understand that our club is bigger than one person so believe we are the real deal this year...... #kissofdeath

I left this one a little bit late, but Monday of last week i was with a few of the Arsenal players for a video shoot. Most of them were disinterested with my Brentford chat, except Henrik Mikhitaryan who was extremely complimentary about our whole set up. He kept talking about "both games being tough" which he later clarified refered to a pre-season game where we beat them 2-1. He also said they were ready for us more because of this friendly and knew what we were about - but was still surprised by our squad depth! He emphasised the praise for the coaching set up and professional attitude of the club. Music to my ears!!!

Feel bad for not putting this on here earlier because remember it was a bit doom and gloom on here after that game and subsequent draw against Reading/Brum.

He makes it sound like Reading outplayed us but if Bentley had made 2 simple saves we would have won the game 2-0.
I don't think he's saying they outplayed us. He said they set up tactically to stifle us and it worked to a large degree. He's right.
However, you're also right, in that errors cost us, and should have still won but for those errors.

Wasn't sure where to post this but EFL Matters had a little segment on Smith to Villa and Thomas Frank taking over the Bees - I found Don Goodman's comments interesting he openly admitted that after our "sacking" (fake news alert) of Warburton he wanted to see us perfrom badly after that as he couldn't understand it. Didn't understand our ways of operating, our use of statistics etc etc. To his credit though he held his hands up and admitted he got it wrong and in his opinion the only thing stoping us from being a top 2 side over the last couple of seasons was our defensive lapses. I guess it's part of the noticeable shift from being sneered at by so called football experts to making them sit up and pay attention...

I used to like him and then he turned into an absolute cnt. I can’t ever forget his disgraceful punditry in the away game at Brighton.

Good to hear that.....
However you can bet the dinosaurs like Harry Rednobb, Sutton, Samuels, Cottee etc. will be sharpening their knives in the hope that TF doesn't hit the ground running.
I can just imagine them delighting in "crazy Benham" who f***ed up and should have gone for a "solid British" manager.....
Makes me look forward even more to us proving them all wrong!!!! :sorted:

I actually think Don Goodman is a decent pundit ... the one who really irritates me is Tony Cottee.

Never liked Goodman since the game against us for WBA a long time ago. Nasty type snarling at crowd and unprofessional. Can't watch/listen to him.

He always seemed to play well against us IIRC
