One for the boffs who love stats.
What are the largest gates the Bees have played in front of, in any competition ?

At a guess, I reckon the highest could have been in that London War Cup Final, at Wembley v Portsmouth on 30th May 1942.
Due to war-time safety and evacuation restrictions the crowd was limited to an approximate 72,0000.
I wish I had been there! :)

That one tops it so far then.
Stoke v Bees at The Millenium 52K, I think,
would that be 2nd ?

Interstingly the home crowd v Arsenal in 38-39 was higher than the game at Highbury.....39,000 at GP, 34,300 at the Library.

I'm sure the announcer at MK said there was 37,403 in that stadium this season.

That is a super guess.
I have not been able to check, yet, but I reckon there could have been bigger attendances than 52000 for some of the Brentford away games during our halcyon years of 1930's and 1940's , when clubs like Chelsea, Everton , Arsenal ,Spurs, Man City and even Charlton could sometimes top 60,000...

55000 at Highbury in 37-38 I think

The print is too small in the 100 year book to look for any more attendances

Speaking as someone who was there - This sounds quite high and our fans outnumbered theirs by about 10-1. It must have been a cold day for them as they were huddled around a fire they had build on their terrace. Maybe they were including the local police in the count - that would have added about 200.

There should be 200 loyalty points per game awarded to anyone who was at any of the 20 games with the lowest home gates.

Didn't we get 2,800 or so for league matches a couple of times at the end of the 84/5 or 85/6 season? I didn't think the Gateshead FA Cup replay pulled in as many as 3,000 either, and weren't there a couple of horrendous crowds at the tail end of Noades' last season?

There's always one! ;)

York (2864) & Darlington (2824) in 85/86. We did have a few games with just over the 3000's attending, in 84/85, 85/86 & 86/87.

THe end of Noades' era had a couple of 3000's plus, but none lower.

Had a quick look, one other fixture was lower than those listed - Gateshead - so one change, to the fewest attendees at GP, has been made..........

Just looked it up. We got only 2,824 against Darlington and 2,864 against York in our final home games of 1985/6. Two league gates from 84/5 were smaller than that Gainsborough crowd too; 3019 v Walsall and 3,021 v Rotherham. The very low league crowd I was thinking of in the Noades era was 3,062 against Cambridge in April 2001.

I always thought there were fewer than 450, but that's the figure given in all the books I have, so I will have to go with that for now.

So, to recap:

The Highest Home attendance figures are from, 33,481 up to 38,768. (Very unlikely, if at all, to be bettered)

The Lowest Home attendance figures are from, 2,531 down to 1,100. (Always a possibilty of lower)

The Highest Away attendance figures are from, 43982 up to 69792. (Definitely a chance to be higher!)

The Lowest Away attendance figures are from, 1,325 down to 450. (Always a possibility of lower)

There may be errors! So someone better check them!

The record attendance at GP has been changed for a number of years now. ;)

The PNE figure, originally quoted as 39626 by the newspapers - I believe - was incorrectly reported and stayed as the highest for years. The actual attendance Brentford FC reported, in 1938, was 37586. :sorted:

The recognised highest attendance is v Leicester City FA Cup in 1948/49, 38768. :)

Well you probably know more about it than me
BUT as long as I have been supporting the bees I have always known PNE to be the highest attendance This is borne out by 100 years of Brentford book

The original Brentford History Book - 1889-1989 - had that PNE crowd as the record, but, about 20 years or so ago, this was changed as the correct data was sourced. It is now, most definitely, Leicester City.

Cracking trip that. Couple of nights in Rimini, where I believe our Brentford flag takes pride of place behind the bar of the rose and crown.

It was listed in the newspapers of the time as 37586 but for some reason was announced as 39626 in the news chronicle album in the September of that year.

This is where the mistake was repeated over the years until myself and supporter Martin Bartley researched it many moons ago.

Great thread. Excellent work Paul, interesting to read. Do you, or anyone else, know the lowest ever number of Bees fans at an away game? I guess there were long periods where records for that won't have been kept but does anyone know, from records or memory or being there at a game that might have been one of the lowest?
