Don't understand the obsession on here with 3CBs and Mourinho-ball tactics given that with a full accompaniment of players we'll probably start in a 4-3-3 anyway.....nothing in our recruitment this summer hints at anything else (imo).

The purchase of Ajer suggests exactly the opposite to me tbh! And 3-5-2 does not necessarily imply we have gone all Jose!

We are into obsessions today! Back to point, currently we have six Centre Backs in the squad so perhaps that is why starting with three is being discussed. Should two of those move on then all will return to default.

Just to be contrary, I thought we started at ManU with a conservative 4-2-3-1 suiting the players actually on the pitch. This got switched up to something more recognisable and attacking in the 2nd half.

While I agree that Ajer has been primarily brought in to cover the 'Norgaard Role', it would also be naive to dismiss him as a RB option in a back 4.

He has played there for Celtic, and by the sounds of it, was quite handy too.

I'm not sure I understand why people are clamouring for Jansson to be dropped either. It's not going to happen.

Don't think so, its all about the strength of the squad. We will pick up injuries, possibly suspensions also, change in formation, so as far as I am concerned they are all required.

Where might we need experience if experience is of value and we’re lacking it?

I can see an argument for an experienced sub keeper but it looks very likely the club is trusting in Gunnarsson and didn’t see fit to persuade Daniel to stay.

We have plenty of competitive experience in central defence even if not in the PL itself. If we play 3CBs I’m not volunteering to tell Kris, Pontus or Ethan they’re too inexperienced.

In midfield, are we saying Norgaard, Jensen or Onyeke need an old head to displace one of them? Good luck with that.

Do we need to wheel a modern Shipperley out (OK, unfair example, say Glenn Murray) to show Ivan the ropes?

If there is an area where experience might help it is wide. An argument for a FB or a winger. But who would be good at this and cheap enough to have more for experience than anything else? Personally I think in these areas the argument is also strongest for getting in one or more top players who will be taking a starting spot off someone. So a new Henrik in someone like Stryger Larsen, or a forward like Matheus Pereira. But unless the club pulls a rabbit out of the hat I don’t think we’re looking at that level. Cheeky bid for Dallas?!
Its obvious that we need Stewart Downing and Aaron Lennon.
Guaranteed survival

I did not say that they were not required as that is not the issue, that being why is there an obsession for playing three at the back. I doubt that there would have been such a discussion if we only had four first team centre backs. It is only a discussion!

One of the many joys of the forthcoming season (in two weeks!) is that we’ve got no idea how the team will be set up. Arteta’s got no chance!

I am no expert but does anyone think it would be a good idea to try and recruit a couple of players who have some Premier League experience?

Looking through the squad Ivan Toney has two sub appearances totally 10 minutes for Newcastle and Sergi 9 minutes in a single sub appearance for Liverpool. None of out coaching team have any experience at this level so the club currently has a grand total of 19 minutes Premier League experience.
I think we've conclusively proved that some of the clichés around football are nonsense over recent years. PL experience? Watford, Fulham, West Brom, Bournemouth, Sheffield Utd, Norwich have squads full of it. Fancy many (if any) of their players over ours? Probably not. And their experience in the PL was getting beaten every week. The truth is that properly good players with PL experience would command wages and transfer fees well in excess of their value to us. Leave the clichés to Sky and BT Sport. We'll plough our own furrow.

Blimey it all happened here. Did no one notice how much more dangerous we were with 3 CB and wingbacks bombing on towards the back end of last season? Chuck Ajer in there running with the ball from the back three and three powerful CMs it will be anything but defensive.

Ethan also towards the end of last season often strode forward with the ball or made runs out wide left while we were progressing the ball upfield with short passes. We might play 433 for fitness and teamwork during friendlies but I can see us being very much less predictable when the season starts.

Ayer was injured and Norgaard was unavailable. I would be worried it we started with Ayer as RB or CB in a back four tbh! 3-5-2 suits the players we currently have ie a relatively inexperienced RB whose strength is his energy and ability to get forward rather than his defending and a converted DM at CB who can bring the ball out from the back

Even Pontus turned up on the right wing against Bournemouth. Though perhaps we shouldn't dwell on that too much...

Yeah, I think he needs to stay back other than for corners.

and you took that from a game where we played most of the game without wingers?
Ideally we’d want a player who can play either inside forward or as a number 10 or as a support striker. That should suit whatever system
We play

Someone like Said!! :D Totally agree. The one thing we could do with going forward is that ability to do something different. Not easy to find though....

Must say I was impressed with a lot of players today. Surprised not to see Haygarth. If we don't see another signing then I would be reasonably content with what we have.

I think we still need to push the general level up a bit. I think Onyeka showed the level of 'athleticism' that Giles and Ankersen were alluding to and Said, perhaps, showed us the level of quality we need to be aiming for in our attacking play. I think we're at a decent level but a lot of the key games are going to be close like this one was and the one error or the one moment of magic can be the difference at the end of the season between staying up and going back to the Champ.

We need another quality forward.
I'd say, ideally, we need another two wide attackers. Apart from Canós and Mbeumo, there's only Valencia that you'd really call wingers, particularly who can play the 'inverted' role and still be able to beat a full-back on the outside, too. We seem to have a number of 'inside forwards' or advanced midfielders but it's only Roerslev and Thompson as wing backs that can also provide crosses.

Given the Ajer ITC delays and Onyeka work permit delays, I wonder if we would only be looking at domestic transfers now?
As long as the deal sheet is in by certain time on Transfer Deadline day the WP/deal completion can wait is my understanding but I may be wrong and I guess we want them in and training with the team ASAP though.

ITC = International Travel Certificate?

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but how does this hold up Kris Ajer when he has already been interviewed by Stu? Is this a football or travel thing?
