Which is our preferred result in tomorrow night's Watford vs Reading match?

A home win would pretty well drive the final nail in the coffin of our automatic promotion hopes. A 12-point gap would surely be too much to overcome, even with two games in hand plus a home game against the current occupants of second place. One can dream and look to the maths for support, but realistically it would be all over.

An away win would revive our hopes but have Reading breathing down our necks and adding to the psychological pressure, threatening our top-six position.

A draw, which leaves a glimmer of hope of finishing second but still leaves Reading a clear length behind us?

A 0-0 draw, many players sent off for a big fight, points deduction for Watford for recidivism.

I admire your hope and others like you who are still full of positivity and hope!
Truly I do. I've settled in my mind for Play Offs. But of course I guess it will be tangled Infront of us if Reading win.

We have chance for 2nd place, so Watford need to lose. Even if Reading do get the 3 pts, it’s our job to win our matches and if we do, they can’t get 3rd. In any case, there are others playing worse than us, like Swansea.

Bascially it requires Watford to lose more than they win: against us in particular, but also against at least two of Reading, Norwich and Swansea, and possibly drop points against Luton and Millwall. It's an unlikely scenario, admittedly, but these things do happen.

They need to lose to us and ONE other.

I fancy Watford for a dodgy run next few games. Maximum of four points from next four games, even if they win tomorrow! You heard it here first! :)

That would be level points, right, so would depend on goal difference which looks like it will be very tight indeed.

We're currently 4 goals behind.
If we were to win the games suggested, and them lose, and we finish equal on points, id largely think our goal difference would be better than theres.

Im sorry its a Watford win for me. I hope we are settled into the Play Offs with 2 or 3 games left to rest some players. Maybe I am being negative but we have failed to beat 4 very poor teams who didnt even try and go for a win. I really hope I am wrong and we go on a great winning streak, I just cant see it at the moment.

Yeh but the fact they didn't try and go for a win, probably means they were in fact all harder to beat. Let's not give up yet, you never know!

They aren't , if they lose tonight promotion is in our own hands.

Unlikely but thats the truth of it
Not quite true. If we win our remaining seven games, including the game against Watford, we reach 91 points.

If Watford lose tonight and then lose against us, they may win all their remaining games and thus reach 91 points.

In that case it all comes down to goal difference, in which case anything goes.

Put differently, it means that if Watford win any four games from their remaining six, they are home and dry.

For what it's worth, I'll be rooting for a Reading win.

While Watford will very likely grab second, I'd still rather there be a chance of us getting in. Therefore a Reading win.

There's nothing to stop Watford going on a losing run in the way that we, Swansea and even Norwich have this season. May as well aim for second.

Five thirty eight give us a 14% chance of overhauling Watford and a 1% (possibly <1%) chance of not making the play offs.
Away win, please.
Those percentages would both increase as a result, but I'll take that.

Post #21 explains why goal difference is not a certainty for Watford and therefore your "put differently" statement is not true. I'm not saying it will happen at all, but it's not even highly likely that Watford would be the team promoted on goal difference.

Look at their fixtures. They won't win 4 out of 6. But if they do then it will be well done to them.

Couldn't really give a toss. I just care about winning tomorrow.
