Thought some of you may be interested that Ben Foster has been posting videos on YouTube recently.
It's under the username of "The Cycling GK" but contains a lot of behind-the-scenes content. I really enjoyed series like Sunderland 'Til I Die on Netflix. He's even gone as far as leaving his GoPro behind him in goal and including clips from that.
And despite the name, the cycling content is few and far between.

The eldest son of an ex-partner of mine played in the same team as Ben Foster, for Racing Club Warwick.

The videos keep getting better. More behind the scenes footage and the GoPro is in his goal for each game.

What I find most interesting is the amount of time they spend in hotels. For example they had a 7:45pm home game against Stoke City on Wednesday but stayed in the hotel the night before and spent the day there.

Looking forward to when we play them.

An interesting bit was the away game to Barnsley.

They flew from Luton to Sheffield Airport "because it saves about 4 hours", then then stayed at the Mercure at Sheffield (40 minutes drive from the airport); then coached it to Barnsley on the day (another 30 minutes)

It's a 2h 20m drive from Luton Airport to that hotel. And the train journey is a similar journey.

So doing the math
Watford FC Training Ground to Sheffield Mercury - 3h on the coach

Same to Luton - 40 mins
Messing about at airport - at least 30 mins
Flight time - 20 mins
Messing about at Sheffield Airport - 10 minutes (coach was on taxiway)
Airport to Hotel - 40 mins

About 2h 20m in total.

Private jet to save 40 minutes and then stick around in hotel for 15 hours ?

I know the hotel well and have stayed there many times, it's nice, but there's no football pitch there, so it's not as though there was a rush to get there

Yep, completely bizarre. Annual cost on travel and accommodation must be extortionate.

I wonder how similar BFC’s travel arrangements are and how far we go to be cost efficient.

At the moment due to Covid social distancing, two players coaches are driven to home and away games.

The hanging around Foster talks about is familiar. I believe Thomas Frank is a fan of driving up on the day if it’s a midweek game. Other managers do it differently and most prefer to stay in a hotel the night before then perhaps use another club’s facilities to do some light training in the morning.

Watford flew up so they didn’t have to take on the M1 or the M6 and spend 6 hours in traffic to an away game. Mental fatigue of this kind is what a lot of supporters don’t understand.

The Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke away games had hardly any rest time and it was travel that dominated the days in between.

Wednesday - play match
Thursday - get home 4am-ish in the morning - have a light training session / warm down in the afternoon
Friday - training session - then leave later that day for Stoke
Saturday - play the match - get home 10ish
Sunday - warm down / rehab or day off

We’re not flying to games. Yet...

Very interesting - thanks.

Stayed at the Hilton syon park before sat game v qpr...seems a bit unnecessary to stay in a hotel for an away game that's about 20 miles away !

Gets them into a routine. And if they have very young families, then they get a good night's sleep.

Ben Foster YouTube

Do they stay at The Grove before home matches? They certainly haven't reviewed their PL budget!

Ben Foster YouTube

That’s some young and healthy man’s digestion that deals with that lot so close to midnight!

Ben Foster YouTube

“Never a penalty!!!” :D:D:D

Ben Foster YouTube

Interesting video to watch as a different perspective, especially his comment at the end of the first half and his friends in the stand saying how Toney has completely beaten him.

Ben Foster YouTube

Nice camera work from the back of the net for Ivan Toney attempts to score (y)

His behind the scenes video from the game on Tuesday night.

Actually quite enjoyed that, not because it was against us but because it shows a good insight into the pro players before, during and after match events and he is actually a good "presenter" too.

Ben Foster YouTube

I would love if a Brentford player started his own YouTube channel doing something similar!

Who would you prefer it to be doing this?
For some reason I think Marcondes would be quite funny, nothing to base it on really other than some of his interviews he has had during his time.

Rather hard for anyone other than Raya to get the footage. And he’s often so far out of his areas as to make it a dull watch!

OK, that would make an in game video harder, but necessarily impossible, in that you can have someone like they did (fan cam) during the match, but he could have a camera before and after the game (maybe someone runs on after game to give to him so he can speak etc).

Yes Marcondes is a good shout. Maybe Sergi? He’s charismatic and seems to get on with everyone so I think it would be a great watch.

Ummmm, not sure what he's going to say after some matches.

This kinda thing is best left to senior members of the squad. Foster is 35 so ideally placed from both a maturity and positional sense,

It's interesting to see if Watford have proactively approved of this output, or if Ben is winging it. I can't see Phil Giles being particularly accommodating to any player that cares about their subscription numbers on YouTube.

Ben Foster YouTube

Thought it was self indulgent crap!

“wasn’t a penalty”. What an arse! A clearer penalty than their one was, that’s for certain.

I have never liked these YouTube ditties. Pointless.

he's 37!

Ben Foster YouTube

After his f*** up today his latest effort will make interesting viewing.

Ben Foster YouTube

He will. He was proper upset with himself after letting in a 30 yard header vs Cov earlier in the season. Doesn't seem the guy to hide anything and he'd take responsibility for it.

Ben Foster YouTube

Be interesting to see if the next WFC manager is content for these to continue.

Ben Foster YouTube

I'm not sure the manager at Watford gets much of a say in anything that happens

Ben Foster YouTube

It's more enjoyable when he's in the team..he's also very greedy!
