Brian Turner

Didn't we have one of these in the 70s - quite famous in his homeland perhaps? Can't recall anything about him - anyone help?

Brian Turner

Yes - sonofabee posted in another thread the name Brian Turner and it comes back a bit. Was he a brother of former cricket international Glenn and golfer Greg perhaps? I can't recall anything about him as a player.

Brian Turner

I'm answering all my own question here - Glenn Turner had a brother called Brian who's a poet so it's unlikely he had another one who was a footballer.

Did anyone see Brian play?

Yes:rolleyes:

Nothing special well built as I remember Inside forward but not a prolific goal scorer
Nothing special comes to mind

:( sorry

Brian Turner played 40 odd games in the 70-71 season and was a regular in the promotion winning side of 71-72. I'd say i saw him play in all of the home games for those 2 seasons and quite a few away's as well. I rated him at the time.

Brian Turner

Turner came on against Brazil - his only outing in Spain 82 - I think the last of over 100 appearances for the All Whites.

But which ex-Bee went on to coach New Zealand in the nineties?

Brian Turner

Ex Chelsea and I think Pompey. Not a bad player but didn't do much.

Brian Turner

He was Frank Blunstone's first signing on a free transfer from Portsmouth in January 1970 having originally been at Chelsea. I remember him as a pretty hard, no nonsense midfielder although at the time, the team was full of players like that! He asked to be released, I believe, at the end of the 1971/72 promotion season so that he could return to his native NZ and he won over 100 international caps.

Brian Turner

Unspectacular but a reliable player and hard worker... my memories of him. He was always a pub quiz banker!

Brian Turner

Many times

Saw him many times and a hard dirty bugger he was. Over at the New rd side he snapped some poor guy's leg, you heard the snap all the way across the ground

Hit the post in the cup-tie at Hull when we were 1-0 up - if it had gone in we may well have won!

Tall, well built player who played in the old 'right half' position - a bit similar to Eddie H but touched the ball more often!!

Brian Turner

I have a book, David Colemans World of Football and page 46 has a article about Brian Turner. :sorted:

The One thing I will always remember about Turner, the ball hit the inside of the post and rolled back across goal, we would have cruised it if that had gone in, instead Wagstaff fouled our keeper and it was scrambled in :(

I was standing right behind that. Happened about five mins after Roger Cross had put us one up. I think it was in the last ten mins that Wagstaff flattened Gordon Phillips. I seem to remember that was the closest Hull came to Div 1 (now the Prem) and just missed out on promotion with Wagstaff and Chilton up front.

BTW If anyone has the old video "Bees on the Box" Brian Turner scores in the 1-1 at home to Aldershot.

I also remember the leg breaking incident. It was a Southport player and the following season I was at Southport for our game there and in the bar afterwards he was getting real grief from some of their fans and was taken out by Eddie Lyons before it all kicked off.

...and you would have been a fool to have messed with Eddie Lyons - he could look after himself, as well!! I once saw him leap to the defence of Willie Graham when he was getting stick from a home fan at a match at barnsley! It was frightening to see - even from a distance!!!

Brian Turner

Built like a tank, and about as agile, strong, slow, awkward but effective, and as hard as nails and happy to mix it every week

If I remember rightly it was Bobby Ross who scored our goal, and wasn't it the second half when Turner hit the post? All happened on the same day that Colchester beat Leeds, so we got little coverage for a great effort that deserved at least a draw.

There were'nt any shrinking violets in the 71-72 team! I remember John Doc giving Turner a slating by the touchline on the Braemar side-'Do what you're f$$$ing well told! Right?!!!'! Brian looked sheepish, nodded and ran off! Hard and very much a player of that era.

Absolutely true. Had that Turner shot gone in it would have been game, set and match to the Bees. Hard to believe, but Hull were in the top two of the 2nd. Division and the Bees were either in the bottom four, or very close to it, of the 4th. Division.

Nevertheless, it was a magnificent effort that deserved a better result.

I certainly recall Brian who I would descibe as a steady eddy type of player more in midfield (or half back as it was then), quite tall and solidly built.

Brian Turner

Turner really was a big lump, but there was a view held by some that he didn't quite punch his weight.
Indeed, I heard him referred to as 'Doris' by one or two on the Ealing Road.
In the Hull game, as has been said, Ross outjumped Roger De Vries to head Docherty's cross past the keeper.
I've got it on tape somewhere.

I think this was beofre Roger Cross's time at Brentford. I thought Johnny Doc got the goal

Brian Turner

I always rated Turner, he was a good passer of the ball and he switched play effectively. During his time at Brentford there was an athletics event for footballers somewhere in London and Turner won the javelin. Why does useless information like this always stick?

Brian Turner

probably because it is useless wiseoldbee! i can picture most of the players from those days - an age thing! and probably being very young then we tended to look up at the players more than we do today as grumpy old men. now what day of the week is it today? that's a far harder question!

Brian Turner

Brian Turner was a hero of mine along side Dick Renwick. Sandhurst Bee right about the bar incident the following season. If I remember correctly, the Southport player was called Martin, a good winger who was a bit of an icon at Haig Ave. These greasers came looking for Turner and I remeber Dick Renwicktaking his blk leather jkt off to be ready to sort them out. Such memories of when men were men.

Brian Turner

I'd like Dick Renwick on my side if it all kicked off. I'd quite like Peter Gelson as well then I'd be really confident.

i was with brian at the weekend. He is working with the Wellington Phoenix. New Zealands, Professional, team in the Aussie League. I am the ex bee who Coached the N.Z. national team. Keith Pritchett. John Docherty took me from Q.P.R. to Brentford and he got the sack two months later. Bill Dodgin thought i was no good at Left back and i only played 11 games in a four month stay at the Bees. I signed on at Watford and played there for six years. Yes at Left back!!! Brian is also the Assistant coach to the N.Z. NATIONAL TEAM AT THE MOMENT.

Welcome to this message board Keith. You are another in a long line of players, old and new, to visit this website. Please keep posting. :sorted::wave:

Please send Brian kind regards on behalf of everyone at Brentford FC.

Mr Dodgin admitted he made a mistake on that one. Can't see a team going from the 4th right through to the 1st division (premiership) these days. Bet you could tell a few stories about those days. :)

I was seated just behind Elton John when he was with Mike Keen at GP watching a midweek afternoon Bees reserve match. From the conversation they were there to watch you and I believe that you were the first Watford signing after EJ took over as chairman.

Tomorrow night the All Whites (Kiwi National Football Team) are again in action in a World Cup Qualifier with their second leg in the Wellington against Mexico and Brian Turner is still the assistant manager/coach. However as they lost the first leg in Mexico 5-1 I would imagine they have little prospect of getting to Brazil but it's a funny old game.

Brian Turner

Just before my time, but always nice to see ex Bees doing well on the international stage.

Yes. My recollection is that he played in midfield but that he didn't complete a whole season with us but my memory might be confused on that bit. I do remember his name though because he was an excellent player and scored a few as well. Old fourth division.

Brian Turner

I saw him play had at least 2 seasons with us. Signed by Frank Blunstone who had known him at Chelsea.

And he fed the ball out to Paul Bence on the right for him to cross for John O'Mara to score just about the finest goal I have ever seen at GP, against Darlington; a better volley than Di Canio's Premier League Goal of the Season.

We moved to Wellington in New Zealand in 1974, one evening while playing football on the local park with my late father and brother ,my Dad stopped when he recognised Brian Turner coaching a local football team.My Dad had a good chat with him later on and was so chuffed he was telling everybody about it for years.
