Accrington Stanley

Surprised Greenholme has not started this thread. Congrats to Accrington Stanley who are in the Football League.

It's a big reminder to all those ****ers that want an "AFC Brentford" that it took 44 years for another team from Accrington to gain League status after the second League side resigned in 1962.

Accrington Stanley

He sort of has in the 92 Club Thread :computer:

Anyway bravo etc, should be seeing AFC Dons in another 40 years or so by my math then :fishing:

Will this thread be able to remain free of quotes from milk adverts?

He was on 5Live a few weeks back. Has a dull job somewhere but still dines out on it. Was invited to Accrington earlier in the season as a VIP guest.

They could be departing this season by the looks of the trouble they're in

118 adult STs this year

From that link: "No-one can take away that we are founder members of the Football League."

Well they couldn't if it was true, but it's about as true as suggesting that Milton Keynes won the FA Cup in 1988, isn't it?

Fully agree with that. I'm surprised that the Beeb haven't changed it from Wimbledon to MK yet.

Accrington Stanley struggling

And you thought we had troubles:

Accrington Stanley chairman Eric Whalley says the club needs new investment if it is to prosper.
In 2006 they returned to the league after 44 years but have struggled to increase their fan-base, and sold just 118 adult season tickets this year.

"If we do not get more people through the turnstiles it could end up as it did in 1962 when it couldnit afford the washing or telephone bill," he said.

I believe the lower divisions should re regional to save travel expenses for clubs and fans and to create more local derbies.

Accrington Stanley

It's no surprise as they are in between Blackburn and Burney, which are only five miles either side.

Milton Keynes Dons did win the FA Cup in 1988. What an absurd thing to suggest they didn't.

Still though, 118 adult season tickets  Surely a League 2 team should be able to manage more than that, even with the likes of Burnley and Blackburn so close ?

He's not doing too badly with trips to Bury, Macclesfield, Rochdale, Wrexham, Chester, Morecambe and Stockporto is he ?

I would say that figure is as just as much down to their marketing and off the field procedures than the proximity of Premiership and Championship football.

It's not in their history any more. They gave it back to Wimbledon. The winners of the FA Cup were Wimbledon FC who now cease to exist.

It seems that the people of Accrington don't care about their team and therein lies the problem. Accrington is about an hour and a half away from Manchester and is a train ride away to Preston and about 10 minutes on the train to Blackburn. The population up north isn't as large as in London so while we have a major problem of trying to compete against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur there are more people willing to support the Bees here as well.

If they want regional foootball they should go back to non league from whence they came...

On those gates shouldn't be too long.

You're new here. I'm going to let you off.

Before we all top ourselves at the thought of another MK Dons/Wimbledon history row, let's go back to Edmundo's original point. I can't believe the Accrington Stanley chairman either knows so little of his club's history, or is willing to rewrite it for publicity's sake. Not even the original Accrington Stanley were founder members of the Football League, never mind its reincarnation. He's way off. Accrington FC were a completely seperate entity who went bust a couple of years after being founder members.

Accrington Stanley

"In June 2004, against the recommendations of the Football Association's Independent Commission, Winkelman announced that he was changing the name of Wimbledon FC to Milton Keynes Dons FC. This was not a popular decision - Winkelman had previously promised fans a vote on the issue, and the committee of the official supporters' club had voted unanimously for the word "Wimbledon" to be retained in the name. They felt that by losing the name "Wimbledon", the controversial move to Milton Keynes could no longer be justified as saving Wimbledon FC. Furthermore, the domain name mkdons.com had been registered by Winkelman in 2000, suggesting that he had always intended to start a new club. When the club formally emerged from administration under the new name and ownership on July 1, Winkelman also announced that he was discarding the club's blue and yellow kit for new team colours and a new badge. This change was again implemented without any consultation with supporters. The new badge bore the letters "MMIV", signifying that 2004 was a new start for the MK Dons."

As much as I think AFC Wimbledon are a bunch of losers, that doesn't mean I think anything more of MK Dons. If the above is to be believed, MK should have either started out at non-league step five level, or Winkleman should have ploughed his cash into one of the existing Milton Keynes clubs and built them up ala Max Griggs at Rushden & Diamonds.

Yes, but all clubs do it. Barnet, even MK Dons went bust in the Edwardian era and should not have their "formed" date as 1889 as can be seen in the Sky Sports Yearbook etc.

Accrington Stanley

There were 12 founder members in 1888: Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackbum Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolves. Three other clubs, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and Halliwell, applied for membership, but were turned down because of fixture-list problems.

Accrington Stanley

There is no way Accrington will survive as a full time League club.

As a regular there a couple of seasons back, I was amazed that the Football League actually let them in in the first place..wait until you see the Ground..

As Bee H says in his post, they have more local derbies than the majority of us, it's just they have never had the support and its a very poor working class area..full to the brim with Asians who simply do not go to football matches..

Shame, but I cannot see them surviving.

Yes, but Accrington Stanley wasn't a re-formation of Accrington, but a separate club who were around before Accrington FC went bust.

how many of these are still the actual, original, bona fida club as formed?

Aston Villa?
Everton?
West Brom?

haven't all the others reformed at some point in their history after going 'bust'?

Not included in that figure are 'Life' Season Ticket holders who paid £1,000 for a season ticket for life, a couple of seasons back.

I don't know how many there are, but they should be included as well.

Accrington Stanley

Apart from Accrington, all the others have been in the Football League and Premier League continuously since 1888.

Not so. The orginal Stoke club went bust in 1908 and reformed.

thats why i asked the question above!

who (if any) are STILL the original members?

Obviously, Accrington FC and Stoke FC went bust. Haven't Derby, Bolton, Wolves, Blackburn, Notts COunty, Preston, Derby and Wolves gone into liquidation and been reformed taking the same name but having a year in brackets after their name?

All bar Stoke and Accrington. The rest are the same clubs, which is remarkable.

but didn't Derby etc etc reform but using the name, say, Derby County FC (1980) ltd or something like that? i'm sure that some have.

Accrington Stanley

I don't count that. If that was the case you could say that we reformed in 1998 when our FL share was changed from Brentford Football & Sports Club PLC to the Noades tax dodging Brentford FC Limited. Also, the FA only allowed club to set up Limited companies in the late 1890s, some time after the Football League was formed.

Accrington Stanley

OK!!!

Accrington Stanley

I like the way that Accrington Stanley have risen from the ashes and struggled to get themselves back in the League. It's true they aren't the old Accrington Stanley or a continuum of the football league founding Accrington FC but they've honoured the old name and provided that connection with past football clubs in Accrington. I hope they can make a go of it and they deserve all the support they need to stay viable.

So is that in the same ball-park as, say Oldham, who reformed as a new limited company about four years ago but claim to be the same club. As opposed to Middlesbrough, who according to my Boro-supporting boss, play it right by having 'formed 1986' on their badge.
I stick to my point re Accrington though. As Ed points out, the original Accrington Stanley were around at the same time as Accrington FC, known then as Stanley Villa FC. It'd be like us going bust, then someone like Brentford Athletic or Brentford Town Sunday, hell even Beesotted, working their way up the leagues, then claiming to be the original Brentford FC.
