The New Manager Thread

Please use this thread to discuss who the naxt manager should be. A poll is also available. The mods have come up with a list, if your favourite isn't on the list please let us know(by posting in this thread) and we'll add it.

The moderators will not remove or change any votes Therefore you might like to wait and consider for a little while (just a suggestion!) before you cast your vote.

Jim Harvey of Forest Green should be on the list imho. Worked wonders at bothe FG & Morcombe. :fishing:

a bizarre list to start with, Gary Johnson, as in Bristol City's Gary Johnson, well of course I would love him, but there is more chance of TB coming back.

Steve Cotterill for me, has that tactical nous needed for the modern game :sorted:

Badly treated by Morecambe.

I have to stick to Daish, it should have been him in the summer IMO and I can't change now.

Agree with maddogging, it has to be Cotterill. His tactical awareness, vision and nouse in the transfer market would be invaluable to us. Did well with Burnley and Bournemouth and would be a superb coup for us. However, with Dyke still here, I really do not know who it will be I shudder to think.

If not Cotterill, then definately Liam Daish who I have always rated and still do so perhaps if Cotterill thinks this is to big a step down, the defo Daish.

As I believe Daish has been interviwed previously, I hav ethis time gone for Jim Harvey, although if Daish still fancied it, then I'd be happy with him.

Jimmy Quinn at Cambridge also doing a decent job.

I think he would have better with Muff if he had been their manager.;) He may have lost to them whilst at Cheltenham I suppose.

i'll second newell... still can't believe after only 19 out of 92 games we've sacked butcher tho... this will be our sixth manager in 60 odd league games... great isn't it.

did a great job at hartlepool and had them palying good football and tough physically.

they always looked good when they came down to gp under him.

Steve King, Lewes FC, currently top of the Blue Square South with 40 pts from 18 games:

"Steve King took over at the Dripping Pan in the summer of 2003, and quickly set about moulding the Rooks into a side that could challenge for promotion from Ryman Division One south. However what followed surpassed all expectations, with the championship being clinched at the end of April 2004, and then another promotion being achieved via three tortuous play-off games in five days. The team then confounded all the experts yet again by finishing in the play-off positions in the first two Conference South seasons, only to be denied the chance to play in them because of their ground".

Don't know anything about him, but: (1) this sounds pretty consistent; (2) he'd know the southern non-league scene; and (3) he's not a has-been or never-will-be regurgitated from the football league.

So what do we need?

A quick fix, or a solid development plan to target Championship football in association with moving to the new stadium?
I would guess that avoiding relegation is the number one priority so I would have to rule out my dream ticket of Glenn Hoddle!:(

The quick fix is "somebody like" Martin Allen (not my choice) and there are precedents where previous managers have returned to do a good job at many clubs.
The long term solution (my preferred route) is somebody with experience of working with financial restraints and under pressure to deliver whie developing a solid infrastructure of youth, reserves and other development.
This has to be a 3 man team IMHO of the day to day club manager, the team coach/manager and the scout. I guess we would struggle to afford the best candidates.
The scout needs local knowledge and networking skills and, in the short term, is the most important asset we could have. I have various ideas and suggestions on this.
The team coach needs all the above and must be self motivated and confident in developing raw talent.
The manager needs experience at Conference, Div 2 and 1 level (at least) and needs to be a strong and respected figurehead.
We need to make the job attractive and secure and, given that there isn't lots of cash in the pot, we may need to look below Div 2 for the 3 persons.
I am happy to offer my suggestions should anyone at BFC be interested!:wave:

The board itself has to take much of the blame for this debacle.

However the fact that we cannot compete with giants such as Accrington, Macclesfield, Bury etc etc with their 1500/2000 crowds in this division is purely down to Butcher and Scott !!

We're in a big-physically based division and we have a midfield who should get plenty of panto work come Xmas !!

Having said that...... I would like Allen, Cotterill or Devonshire.
But why would Allen take on an even smaller wage bill than he left behind ?

Steve Cotterill would probably be ideal, great motivator and a very modern manager. Experience in this league and has built a good team at Burnley before he left. I'm not sure if he'd fancy Brentford but Wrexham managed to get in Brian Little so you never know :shrug:

Well, there's plenty on that list who could do a job at this level.. (as well as plenty we should avoid at all costs!!)

Daish for me. Then Fallon from Histon - people who can work miracles on no budget worth speaking of. Failing that, some old bloke with lots of lower league experience. Hollins could be an interesting one - did miracles at Crawley and their problems put ours in the shade....

Although my vote might be "anyone but martin allen" ... (never go back is an adage that should be adhered to in my opinion), he could be more than useful because if Butcher's departure means the loss of the goalkeeping coach, we also need a new groundsman!!

...perhaps MA could manage the team in the mornings and cut the grass in the afternoons? I bet that could sound quite attractive to Mr Dickens as he tried to re-balance the budget?

Jim Smith, bored at Oxford, good experience and contacts, has already made his money.
Paul Simpson, managed at this level before.
Paul Buckle doing well in conference.
Steve Tisdale, see above.
Mickey Adams, is he currently employed?
Alan Devonshire, lives locally, doing well.
Fallon at Histon.
Ann Stanford, doing well on a tight budget, good people skills.

I doubt Parkinson would want to leave a well paid assistants job at Charlton for a low paid managers job at Brentford. :idea:

Surely KD has to get this appointment right or his position becomes untenable?!

My vote goes to Paul Simmo - got a raw deal at PNE and has managed at our level before (and did he not WIN league 2 at Carlisle on a thinner budget than we have at the minute?)

MA absolutely MUST NOT be in the running at all.... he'd only jump at the first opportunity to go to a higher league AGAIN which would only further de-stabilize our club!
