Looking at the kit shown in the programme v Reading, two things struck me.

First, there were tiny variations in the stripes on the shirt - for example, the way they overlapped with the collar - suggesting that they had been handmade.

The second was that, even allowing for the tiny variations, there seemed to be two versions of the shirt. Some players had a white stripe down the middle, otheres had a red stripe.

Were some players wearing a shirt from the season before, or were the shirts just rubbish?

Shirts were reused. Some had badges, some didn't.

I reckon that the 1971/72 Budget was unbelievably small, so small that the Players were lucky to have shirts at all; 14 contracted professionals at the start of the Season was the entire strength of the Club; and Frank Blunstone still won promotion.

Can I ask - did the club sell replica shirts in those days, or did your parents have to buy a red and white shirt and sew the badge on themselves? And if it was the first, do you have any idea how much they cost?

from what my mum said, my dad worked on the turnstiles in 1971 - he did the Royal Oak corner gate transfer to Braemar Road under the floodlights till it got knocked down in the 80's ... she seem to recall not buying them but suggest my dad was given the shirts for my older brother and me.. The players and chairman use to park at the rear of the Royal Oak end and walk down the long steps towards his gate to go to the tunnel between c and d block... the players loved us and we got spoilt rotten.. my dad was very popular at the club..

That's what I had, without the sew on badge, although my mum did get me a green goalkeepers top and sew a badge on that.
