1972/1973 away kit

Just come across a photo of the corking away kit we wore in September 1972 v Notts County at Meadow Lane. Anyone know what colours were on that band and whether we wore that often? For you history buffs, that's Peter Gelson clearing one off the line.

I hope it is the Peru kit, always loved that and if we can find out we actually wore it then that would make this poor man smile.

What’s the date? (*30 September 1972*)Where were Palace that day?

*edit* just checked, they were home to Norwich! Who else wore a strip like that? County’s away kit?

checked 'historical kits' and Palace only started wearing that scheme (at home at least) in 76.

Remember us playing in a QPR kit away at Colchester back in the day(mid/ late 70’s maybe - maybe later) . Anyone else remember that?? No idea why!

If I were glancing at that first time I would have argued the chap in stripes top back was Gelson! I suppose half of every team had long hair and sideburns those days. A cracking kit. My Sunday side had one about then which was a white shirt with a diagonal blue stripe over the shoulder

The slough reference library used to have the archives of the much lamented Slough Evening Mail (I read them about 10-15 years ago). Quite extensive bees coverage in the 1972 editions. That might have an explanation if anyone has the inclination to look.

I do remember this kit and think it was red and blue stripes, but I wouldn't go to the stake over it. The player with the handsome sideburns is Alan Nelmes.

Someone based in Norwich has what appears to be all the Col Utd 78/79 season home programmes for sale on ebay at £3.99 including their following home match versus Carlisle which may contain what you are after lol

Hold on to the set for another 10 years and it's value may reach as much as £4.50.

The stripes were blue and purple I think. It was worn for the first time in the League Cup second round game at Rotherham that season. I believe it was used a few times and I know we played in at Scunthorpe and Crewe. I've got a few photos of it being worn in those matches.

Looked through the programmes from that season. They mentioned Brentford’s colours as being; White shirts & Blue shorts and Royal Blue shirts. No pictures, unfortunately, and no mention of the kit either, from what I could see.

It would be interesting to search what the away strips were from the 1960’s to present. We know many of them but a few were one offs.......:)

I remember from my programme collecting days some old programme's team sheets referring to teams kits and calling shorts knickers .

I'm pretty sure I've got a great photo (black and white, of course) of that 1972/73 away kit being worn in one of the games. I'm away for a couple of weeks but when I'm back I'll try and find it.

Can’t remember seeing any pictures of the away matches from the sixties to mid-seventies. Maybe need to trawl the away clubs newspapers to see! :)

A Man C. kit from around then was very similar, their 3rd strip after the A.C.Milan ‘Rosso Negri’. White with a red and blue diagonal stripe. I’m fairly certain it was Malcolm Allison that introduced it and maybe pinched it from Palace.

The game was on ITV's The Big Match

Our Red and Wite Stripes would have clashed with Colchester's Blue and White Stripes when viewed on a Black and White telly.

Our Blue away kit would have also clashed, so we borrowed QPR's 'Aberdeen looking' all red Addidas away kit and lost 6-1

Thought I was too but didn't think we lost 1-6! Actually thought we won it. Different occasion perhaps?
