Anyone else properly excited by next year?

Settled management, a young squad a few years from peak, exciting players, excellent away days, real prospects of top 6, quality all over the pitch.

You reds :sorted:

If you're like me, then you'll be planning your away trips in your head and keep looking at the calendar to see how long it is until the fixture list comes out. When can I book my accommodation for Tyneside... Metro line is South Hylton? Will there be sunshine for Burton? Where's the best Indian for Villa Park?

Absolutely :sorted: I said to my mates the other day. Watch us give it a real go next season. They said " you say that every year "
I've said in in more than hope in the past But next season with the talent the club has assembled now and two/ three quality additions. I'll be able to say " told you "

Very, very excited now, ask me again on Aug 31 when hopefully our incredible young talented squad has been enhanced rather than depleted.

i think we have a great chance, and i'd bet on us (+Villa) to go up (good odds i reckon) if i was more of a gambler, but someone reminded me over beers the other night that Brentford exist to put me off gambling - if i did the bet, i can just see another Trotta/Doncaster situation leading to our "best ever" season being for nought.

so i'll sacrifice my winnings so that we can all enjoy it more, deal?

As it stands next season looks very promising however over the Summer there will be ins and outs. Will depend if when the window closes we are stronger than we currently are.

This team is capable of having a cracking season but in my opinion are only possible play off candidates. Strengthen and retain the likes of Harlee and jota and who knows what's possible

My worry is there are some big teams with serious money entering the division, plus the likes of Villa etc,any of them get off to a good start and it will be really tough.

Well thats confusing.. I have no memory of posting this rofl

On sober reflection I still am excited though :bound:

If we don't lose anyone, get another striker in to compete with Vibe and the injured players return early in the season and stay free of injury I think we've got a decent shot at automatic promotion.

In a way, and looking to take something positive from today, maybe the defeat/performance was not necessarily a bad thing........Showed there's still definitely work to be done and also might result in a bit of 'expectation management'. I can just imagine if we'd given Blackburn a good beating and played some scintillating stuff that there'd have been more than a few on here who would have had us as good as up after the end of season we've had!!! And then gone completely the opposite as soon as we lost a game next season!!! Hopefully today will be the equivalent of Huddersfield's 5-1 against us on the last day of last season.......

Today and last week showed to me the lack of depth in the squad....if the injured trio are fit then that will be great news

2017/18

U aint wrong.....we need to ditch kk, give vibe some competition and teach clarke whos a proper prospect a lesson in defending as hes far too keen (and good) to get forward :)

yeah but, we don't have a total lack of depth - i'd say we're pretty well covered. you've got to be realistic with it - we can't have three players of first-team quality for each position, for example, cos some wouldn't play regularly and would get pissed off

missing both full-backs yesterday, and Woods / Josh / Judge / McLeod from our potential centre-mid selection. signing a new right-back apparently, and a talented kid as our reserve left-back - i think talented kids as the back-ups is the best-case scenario, myself, but it does mean you might have to tolerate some mistakes as part of the "learning experience"

we've got 10 central midfielders potentially, and i think a lot of us still want one more! (Woods / Josh / Judge / McLeod / Nico / Sawyers / KK / Macca / Cole / Westbrook) - i do know what you mean, but having too many expensive players of proven quality could well damage the squad harmony...

I expect Macca to go. Cole and. Westbrook are really still B team players. Having seen the team AWAY on numerous occasions this season you notice the lack of experience in midfield. The Mail today highlights Preston in getting MaCgready on a season long loan and quote 'paying a fraction of his wages'. It can be done with the right contacts.
I feel we have finished around we're we should be at present, and if our owner MB is looking to push on to a top 6 then we will need a striker (especially who can hold up play away from home). A midfielder to replace Macca. I expect DS would like a replacement for Hofmann as well.
We have at present a very talented squad, but their are areas of weakness, which at times are shown up especially away from home, when we seem small and not competitive at times against bigger physical sides.

I think there's little doubt we will be a team to be reckoned with. Given the way we play we'll need to keep targeting wins, taking draws when they come and taking losses on the chin and bouncing back the week after. 30 wins would get automatic promotion, 25 playoffs. It's a big ask. The key will be avoiding protracted slumps.

I've little doubt that any players we lose will be well replaced but the key to success will be ensuring the squad blend remains good and the positivity continues to flow. And that has come from talented creative players enjoying their football. It'll be an exciting season whatever happens this summer..

Statistically, we've marked time this year (10th and 64pts), but we can all see the potential this close season, is much greater than last. As a first target we need to add 15 - 20 pts to get to the Play Offs. Hopefully a year's collective experience in the Championship will allow better game management & turn some of the losses ( W18 L18) into draws and wins.
Simples really!

Holding midfielder with a physical presence, a big, quick, strong goalscorer and Jota playing at his very best and we are top 6 material.

Looking forward to Villa, Raras, Putney(hopefully) Sunderland (weekend in Newcastle), Burton part 2, Swansea(fingers crossed), Millwall and a nice little FA cup run as well.

In theory I suppose you're right. But MacCormack hasn't been offered a contract and will be leaving. Cole and Westbrooke have a long way to go to prove their first team credentials and three of the rest are recovering from long term injuries and may or may not regain form and fitness. On top of that Yennaris has been nursing a long term injury which will need attention sooner rather than later.

That just leaves Woods, Sawyers and Kerschbaumer, the last of which has seldom made the starting X1. When you look closer our apparent surfeit of central midfielders tends to shrink significantly.
