You rarely pick a spare batsman for a home test unless there are injury doubts but I would have given Taylor a go.

Onions and Tremlett both in the squad.

Not impossible that England drop Bairstow for Onions and go with a 5 man attack given close trunaround between tests. Will make batsmen more diligent over their wickets and still puts Prior at 6, Bresnan at 7, Broad at 8 (who is starting to look like the all rounder we thought he could be) and Swann at 9.

We rarely do that though, it's very unlikely. More likely Onions for Bresnan I think.

pathetic to stick with a talented 22-year-old who hasn't done much wrong? :scratch:

as said on t'other thread, i'd probably give Jimmy a rest, rather than bowling him til he gets injured and then being forced to work without him - why not get the experience now? depending on the pitch i'd be surprised if they don't give Tremmers a go too. Onions and him for Brez and Jimmy.

Everytime I watch him bat he looks completely out of his depth.

he got a 60-odd in this series and a 90-odd against the saffers last year. "every time" is an exaggeration.

i must apologise too, he is actually nearly 24!!!

i just think we're a little quick to stick the boot in at times. and anyone who says "compton was treated harshly" is ridiculously hypocritical if they're calling for bairstow to be dropped too

but we could go on and on so let's leave it. i'll be back in 5 years to remind you and Indian Bee about this :suspect:

I don't think it is fair that Compton was treated like that and Bairstow is given chance after chance and is yet to make a ton.

This sort of comment does infuriate me..:mad2:
Please cast your mind back to 2005 and Michael Vaughan's 166 at Old Trafford.
He was dropped early in his innings and bowled very next ball off a no-ball from McGrath.

I think Bairstow has the 5th/6th highest average from either team this series. I'm not totally convinced but he's been inactive in both tests & county cricket this year which has more likely been a factor.

Give youth a chance FFS.
Completely different players and I think the correct decision was to omit Compton from the team.
I don't think that England have an embarrassment of riches of county cricket batsmen.
There are plenty of youngsters that will come to the fore in 20/20 & 1 day.
Pietersen is the only likely figure I can see retiring in the next 2-3 years which will give the likes of Root, Bairstow, Taylor & Morgan a chance to really establish themselves.

must.... resist.... can't.....

two big differences: Compton had a run where he looked legitimately awful, JB hasn't (no single-figure scores). Compton is 30, JB is early 20s.

it's just if you're going to say "Compton didn't do much wrong", it's difficult to call for Bairstow to be dropped, cos what has he done wrong? he's contributed during the series, not as much as we'd want in an ideal world, but "he's not done much wrong" :)

Morgan will never be test class. Ever.

As Salford said Compton was dropped but JB isn't. seems to me the selection panel have their favourites.

Anyone that knows Monty, especially people from his hometown Luton can vouch that was a load of bull.

As for Laxman lol ha, never believe what a former cricket captain tweets.

vaughan alluded to hearing that monty was having some "issues" down in Sussex a few weeks ago on his radio show. didn't go into details but it sounded like he was possibly going off the rails a touch. shame. but he's been proven as a second spinner at best for us, not someone you'd want as your primary spinner, and i think as soon as they identify a young talent (if not tredwell) monty will be out of the picture. was kinda surprised he got named in a squad this summer to be honest.

Wouldnt mind seeing Tremlett in for Broad either, but that means a horrible tail.

Would like to see Onions in for Bairstow and have a give man attack and make Prior Bresnan and particularly Broad step up to the plate batting wise. With that attack I can't see Australia getting past 300 in an innings

Although by their high standards, Cook, Trott and especially Prior have had a shocking series so far with the bat.

Would be interested to know how many centuries Trott has had in the last 10 tests, can't think of many apart from NZ away. Before anyone barks I am a big Trott test match fan.

Can see England keeping the same XI.
There is an argument for playing Onions, but it would be really harsh on Bresnan, who has done nothing wrong.
Can see us resting a bowler or two at The Oval IF we have won the series, but here it would give totally the wrong signal before the series is decided.
If Broad is fit, he will play

Root out, not sure if having him open the innings has been an unqualified success as, apart from Lords where the pressure was less, he has not filled me with any great confidence

Difficult now to drop him back down the order as that would do his confidence no good. Difficult decision for the selectors for the Oval

Can't understand England's tactics.

Can only think we are trying to bat as long and as slow as possible to take time out of the game so that it reduces Aussies chance of forcing a win.

Very negative, feel for Onions, what is the point of doing well in County cricket if continued success goes un-rewarded?
