Any new fans or doubters of Mathew Benham's support for this club would be advised to read Stand Against Modern Football. Mathew Benham's Brentford from issue 14. It can be found on newsnowbrentford, I cant do the link stuff maybe someone can. A very good history of where we have come from over the last 20 years or so.

At last, an article which smacks the nail firmly on the head. Great read.

Bits of detail even I, as a loyal supporter who tries to keep up to date with any BFC developments, didn't know re initial fees paid to Woking and K's. Also the 'plot' for Uncle Ron to buy Loftus Road, and lease it out to Bees and QPha. Excellent read which should have a wider audience than it has.

Cheers readingbee, that was a great read.

It 100% should be promoted online and at GP to raise the awareness of the clubs recent plight. It's impossible to not appreciate MB after reading this. It should help some get a grasp on reality.

That is simply the best piece I've read about the history of our club from 1997 till the present day.

It should have a thread of it's own, and it should be a sticky.
**** it, it should be emailed to everyone on here.
It should be printed and handed to everyone coming through the turnstiles at GP.

A brilliant article. :hat:

Thank you, readingbee.

Wow, what a glowing endorsement.

The article was written by myself, thank you Billy (and all others) for your praise - I'm delighted you enjoyed it.

Up the Bees!

Matthew Benham's Red and White army!

Oh, and I would recommend you all purchase a copy of Stand fanzine - an excellent read that focuses on all issues facing clubs from all levels. Very insightful.

Great article though brought back some bad memories. I remember sitting on the tube on the way home from work and seeing the back page of the Standard someone was reading and the headline was about us moving to Woking. I really thought that was it for our club. Shows how far we've come thanks to one man. Really need this spread around as much as possible, people might realize, especially the younger fans, why some get so angry when MB is criticized for his methods, he really does have the club at heart, we've had plenty that don't.

Not sure I knew about Noades and Loftus Road but the Webb transfer thing went back to the start of his time with us didn't it?

Nice summary. Were you involved in the dark days at all? Or just very good at keeping up to date? Think there are some very minor errors in the article but nothing noteworthy or material

It was always my understanding that Noades was unable to sell GP because of the "Golden Share" created by Martin Lange. Whatever, you think of him with regard to the Royal Oak, cutting his losses etc, surely he deserves some credit for retaining sufficient shares so that Noades could not have it all his own way?

It was Noades that gave Lange that "Golden Share" and it was individual to him and non-transferable as (as Martin Lange said to me) "he was very clear on that - it was personal to me"

History will show Martin Laing was one of the bad guys.

...and one of the brains behind the play off system. Lange didn't do us any favours with that, did he?!

Likewise, this is a fantastic read, although my fear is that in this modern age, alot of people cannot hold their concentration for long enough to read the article, so the true impact of the article will never be felt, instead only re-affirming the views of those who are already converted.

I fear you may be right, but anyone who professes to give a sh*t about Brentford FC should be given easy access to the article.
If they can't be bothered to read it, then that tells us all we need to know.

It is written with gusto and keeps your attention with controversial fact followed by even more controversial facts. It held my attention which is not an easy task

No Banana, I wasn't involved in the dark days (I only started attending games as a 5 year old in 1996). Out of interest what were the errors?

Anyone only reading half the article will go away knowing MB saved our club from virtual extinction. That's good enough for me.

Very true, but I didn't need to read it anyway, as a true supporter for over 60 years I can be bothered to to keep up to date, unlike many who can't be bothered, don't want to know, fail to understand, live in the past, head in the sand, thick, etc, etc, etc, I have suffered some diabolical dark footballing days along the way, at long last I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, Happy and exciting times to come, be patient, it won't be overnight, but we will get there with Matthew at the helm.
