Not really. AFCON starts January 13th, Ivan is back on the 17th. So the only game we’ll have none of Ivan, Bryan, Wissa will be Forest on the 13th, but as there’s the winter break that could still be moved to the weekend of the 20th, when we will have Ivan.

Assuming we develop KLP and Schade as we should and Neal fits back in I think that’s a perfectly serviceable front line for the few games the AFCON lads will miss. We might even have Ivan for a couple of games though maybe off the bench if he’s likely to be going in January.

This competition will never be taken seriously in Europe whilst it happens bang in the middle of the season.thankfully afcon 2025 ( it seems to happen every year ) will be in the summer

I did some research about the tournament dates and their likely impact on the squad as it seems to be dominating almost every page of the transfer thread at one stage and a lot of OTT speculation (ie we are not missing all of our forward line for 6 weeks...). Will try and finish and share tonight.

The players in brackets are players I've heard of, so must have started a few games.
Fulham, Brighton etc have 1 going, but I've never heard of them so didn't bother to name them.

Taiwo Awoniyi from Forest hasn’t been included in the Nigeria squad. He’s been injured since November and is also probably their best player.

I’m going to assume that Forest have told Nigeria that he definitely won’t be fit for AFCON which will make it unlikely that he’ll be fit to play against us.

I’m going for Ivory Coast.

Senegal run the risk of playing The Premier League’s Most Despicable Fraud (Nicolas Jackson), which will certainly hinder their chances of success.

It’s a bit of a joke tournament nowadays. Just under half of all African football federations qualified for the finals - bit mad when you consider how small some of the countries who competed are: São Tomé and Principe, Seychelles, Mauritius, Lesotho, eSwatini, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Cape Verde, Rwanda and Burundi etc. Two are currently suspended from football (Kenya and Ethiopia), and Eritrea didn’t even enter.

Heart will be with Namibia ?? ?? and I’m looking forwards to Bafana Bafana’s perennial failure and humiliation ? ??

We’ve got Wissa and Onyeka going to the AFCON (+ x2 at the Asia Cup - Ghoddos and Ji-Soo) and Forest will have x6 missing when we play them, a significant chunk of their starters so we need to maximise our opportunity and get a good result.

Spurs will also be without Son when they face us, assuming that South Korea don't get knocked out early on.

I read that the Chinese and Saudis had a big vested interest in the competition due to their closely related investments etc..

Good question. Short answer: absolutely not.

International football on the continent is very different from Europe. Because of the low/very low average income in general, huge size of the place when travelling and the ridiculous costs of intra-continental air travel (plus very few direct flight connections) fans just don’t travel to the games, unless they are lucky enough to be in the sponsored national supporters groups. The colorful and fun bands of painted dancers in the stands you see? Paid for by national associations to attend, otherwise there’d be no one there cheering the team on. So very little money from fans attending the games - those who bother to turn up will be essentially locals.

Zero money to be made on merchandise when outside the stadium you can pick up Chinese knock offs of the official shirt for $5.

African football (and indeed sporting) culture is also different to Europe’s. Hold the Euros in the UK and every game is sold out - we’ll go and watch Austria vs Iceland if we have the chance. In Africa, they don’t generally have that interest. Years back I went to watch Algeria vs Tunisia followed by Togo vs Ivory Coast, in Rustenburg (South Africa). Despite the second game having three African Players of the Year playing, none of the Algerian fans (who’d travelled in decent numbers) bothered to stay to watch. And most of the locals were White Saffers who followed PL teams. Expect to see many stadiums empty when most of the teams are playing, sadly.

Finally, much of the sporting infrastructure across Africa (bar SA, Morocco and now Cameroon) is so woeful it costs an absolute fortune to bring a country’s facilities up to the required standard. Cameroon spent $885,000,000 to host the last AFCON - money that the country absolutely does not have.

Obviously, TV doesn’t have much household penetration across Africa - I’d say most people watch football at their local bar rather than at home, outside of Southern Africa perhaps. This means it’s not worth a huge amount of money when it comes to advertising revenue, as a quick perusal of the quality of tv adverts in Africa will show. Think Guinness’s ‘Black is Beautiful’ efforts shown twice during any break ? And to make this particular AFCON complicated, CAF gave the rights to show the games to a Togolese company, meaning DSTV (Dry Season TV to those ITK - the continent’s biggest satellite TV company) won’t be showing any of the games (!!!!). This is causing a huge amount of angst on the continent as fans try to find out how to watch the games.

To sum up - no one makes money out of AFCON other than those on the take when improving a country’s infrastructure ?).

But I can’t wait and will probably watch every game, like I did during the last AFCON ?

Nigeria lost 0-2 to Guinea today in a pre-AFCON 2024 friendly in Abu Dhabi.

Onyeka came on as a sub in the 73’ minute. Jeanvier started for Guinea.

Pathetic from the Super Eagles, and unacceptable given their resources and the talent pool that they can draw upon. Guinea are placed 80th in the FIFA ranking FFS… ?

The Super Eagles are just soooooo poor when it comes to friendlies. They’ve won just one of their last 17 friendlies, with seven draws and eight losses!!

Now FTT and his mates have to fly from the Gulf to Lagos for some bullshit farewell dinner hosted by the Governor there tomorrow night before then going on to Abidjan on Wednesday. Typical NFF nonsense ?
