Mad isn't it, and even more so considering they only seem to have gone backwards in the past year. Our 13 or so million seems to have got us a great deal further.

I remember few years ago when Wolves got bought by their current owner, they were working closely with Jorge Mendes and signing loads of players under him. Not too sure if that carried on, but wouldn’t be surprised, considering they have 4 Portuguese players (same nationality as Mendes).

It is no surprise. I think he’s stepped back a little, but he’s still involved there.

Why do agents get paid by both parties to a transaction? (So I heard on the radio this morning.)

Resulting in requests for ever higher signing on fees / joining bonuses to enable the players to pay the agents. Wouldn’t solve the problem.

It’d be very expensive for clubs. If they changed to this, the agents’ fees would have to be covered by income for the player. As that would be taxed at 45% plus 2% NI and the player would also pay VAT on the service when paying the agent, players would expect to have their signing fee increased to cover it.

Clubs paying agents directly cuts out that middle man tax and clubs being VAT registered will end up paying a lower net % VAT.

For a club like ours, whacking an additional £10m+ onto outgoings to not pay agents fees directly would be very significantly bad.
