He's under contract - another paid off?

Thought he signed a 2 year deal last season under Leroy?

If not then maybe Ebbsfleet might want him and no doubt pay him more than he currently earns.

Whatever, i'm sure he won't be here next season.

Alan Bennett thread

Personally, I have a preference to see Brentford win games that I attend, even if there is nothing left to play for... it seems others are not so bothered :fishing: .

I don't see Heywood and Osborne as experimental - they were forming a good partnership.

Alan Bennett thread

The last home game always attracts a bigger crowd than normal and with Hereford in the running, they will bring a few down.

People aren't coming through the turnstiles to see Bennett, are they? If Heywood was still injured you would have an argument but I see no point throwing good money after bad but if you want to chip in then no problem. :fishing:

I'm not alone in this viewpoint either.

I'd like to see us win a couple more games and that is more likely with Bennett than without imho and at little if any extra cost, if you weigh up teh net cost of Charles & Ide being out on loan.

Alan Bennett thread

Is Heywood not on an appearance bonus? He may not be here next season so why play him? :fishing:

How fit are they? How fit is Pead? We need cover and Bennett is better than others.

Alan Bennett thread

For me, if Heywood and Osborne fit they should start as the defensive pair, if Bennett deffo off what's the point?

I don't know if Heywood is likely to be with us next season but there is no way that Charles and Osborne will be first choice centre backs together so Heywood should be included until he is no longer available for selection. Currently he's captain and the heartbeat of the team so must be used in preference to Bennett.

Alan Bennett thread

KO maybe out so having Bennett till end of the season will do me.

Charles isn't good enough, Heywood maybe off, Bennett is loan and Karleigh is still not commanding enough. AS will have a long post/pre season to pick a couple of good CB's for next season.

Alan Bennett thread

I have read all these points with interest but I still feel strongly that UNLESS we are paying nothing for Bennett - and I would bet more than a trip to Paris that we are paying a fair whack for him, then his remaining at the club is unjustified and that the money expended (even if it is "cost neutral" - whatever that means) should go into next season's playing budget.

Believe me, Mr Bennett will not put any extras on the gate unless he has a massive extended family - and they would probably all get freebies anyway!

Alan Bennett thread

All of this is idle speculation as,unless we are privvy to the terms of the loan, who knows how much we are paying him and how much Reading are paying him during his loan period.
I trust AS to know what he is doing and I,for one, cannot imagine him wasting bundles of money just to keep a player here until the end of the season.

You need a better imagination :(

As my avatar shows I am also a Cork fan (family connections) but Bennett or not I aint gonna be at any more games this season - no need for a 12th man when ya mid table nothings

Absolutely, totally, utterly, pointless extending his loan. We're not going up, we're not going down, we can cover centre back with Sankofa, Charles, KOC, even Mousinho. Total waste of money, and how come it came about over a week after the loan deadline??

Alan Bennett was signed on loan when it was believed that Heywood was out for the rest of the season. At that time we still had a faint but not impossible chance to get to the play-offs. Reading wanted Bennett out on loan to "play games" and the agreement was that we would take him through the rest of the season but that it would be for an initial one month in order that the player who had no experience at League Two level could settle in and see if he wanted to stay. He had previously been on loan at Southampton and Reading would no doubt have preferred him to be gaining further experience at Championship level. It was important to Brentford at the time to have a "handshake option" through to the rest of the season as we did not want to be in the position where we were still going well, Bennett was returned to Reading at their request with us having five games still to play and with Heywood possibly still out. In those circumstances we would have had no cover for what could have been a vital run-in. It didn't work out that way but it was considered that we should honour our unwritten agreement with a club which has been more than generous to us with loans and friendlies and the continuation of the excellent relationship and the keeping of our verbal agreements should I submit take priority plus the last thing that we need is for BFC to gain the reputation of being "messers" when it comes to dealing in the loan market. The January transfer window ins and outs were neutral financially, the Bennett loan took us "overdrawn" if you like but the monies we are paying for Bennett are partially covered by Ide and Charles going out on loan through the end of the season and gathering more experience.

That's the story......it was a hard one to call. Markbfc is correct and there is no chance of getting Bennett on a permanent transfer in the summer much as the Team Management would like him. However we should not I believe make a virtue out of keeping our verbal agreements with other clubs and whilst given our position now it seems monies down the drain there were reasons behind the decision.

Alan Bennett thread

I think it is worth a few quid to keep Reading and Sir Steve sweet. The money means nothing to them really but the fact that we are good people to do business with does, in my very simple outlook.

Plus it means we are less likely to require F****m players on loan :yuck:

this'll keep a few whingers quiet!

it's good to read explainations like this, i can understand keeping stuff 'in house', but to explain it to keep certain clubs happy so as not to pi$$ them off for when we may require assistance again will do me.

Thank you for the explanation abee and I am delighted that Brentford are the kind of club who keep their verbal agreements.

How do Reading feel about Hamer sitting on the bench?

How do Reading feel about Hamer sitting on the bench?

He's played nineteeen first team matches for Brentford this season in two loan spells and for a youngster (only turned 20 last November) that's not too dusty. Andy Scott rates Hamer very highly I believe and one of his first acts in the January transfer window was to ask Reading if he could come back for a second loan spell.

Simon Brown returned to the first eleven following the home defeat to Bury but the answer to your question is that I would suppose that Reading are well pleased with the progress that Hamer has made this season and with the experience that he has gained. Young players also gain experience just by being in and travelling with the squad and Hamer has done very well indeed to hold down the position for as long as he did against an experienced keeper who was brought in during last summer to be the first choice 'keeper.

And before you ask........ yes my correspondence course in "Diplomacy As The Basis of Friendly Communication" is coming along very nicely thank you.

:)

the agreement was that we would take him through the rest of the season but that it would be for an initial one month in order that the player who had no experience at League Two level could settle in and see if he wanted to stay..

Why did we agree to this? If Reading wanted a break clause after one month why haven't we got the same? If Reading want him to gain experience then why is it costing us money, assuming it is?

Where did I write please that Reading wanted a break clause.....we also want Ide and Charles to gain experience and that is costing both Lewes and Ebbsfleet monies. It's the same argument. We take or send players on loan and the cost is negotiated between the clubs anything from nominal to covering the full wage. Sure the loaning club get a benefit if you like with their player gaining experience but there is also the risk that he could sustain a nasty injury which keeps him out for future months.

I cannot go on debating it all day...the continuation of Bennett's loan was reasonably enough being viewed as a waste of monies by some supporters and looking at it coldly I can understand why. I did my best to explain the circumstances. You seem to suggest that if Reading wanted Bennett to gain experience then they should have let us have him for nothing but if that were the case they would have offered him to Championship clubs on the same terms and we wouldn't have got a look-in. He was on loan to Southampton before he joined us and played I believe ten matches for them in the Championship. They would like to have kept him but as I understand it financial constraints resulted in him being returned to Reading when his loan spell concluded.

Alan Bennett thread

Thanks for the clear and measured explanation, abee. I don't suppose you know why the extension to Bennett's loan hasn't been announced on the official site, do you?

Alan Bennett thread

Could we get Hamer and Bennett for free at the end of the season and have Reading pay their wages? That would be nice.;)

Alan Bennett thread

I guess it's fair enough, keeping Reading sweet is probably worth the extra cash (hopefully they'll reward our 'integrity' with another pre-season friendly)..

What would be a shame though, would be if we then HAD to play Bennett in the rest of our games, in place of the likes of Osborne and Sankofa, who'll be far more likely to be part of the first team next season and for whom, from our point of view, more match experience is essential..

I've just looked at the announcement back in March where it simply said he was joining us on loan. No term was announced so in that respect I guess the thinking would be that there was nothing to report unless he was going back.

It was ladbroke (who clearly has his sources) who posted yesterday that Bennett was staying until the end of the season and it kicked off from there.

Can we get Bennett and Hamer on season long loans for next season and get rid of Brown?

I guess ladbroke's source was the SMS service, which announced the extension. I can't understand how the news is thought worthy of sending to people via text message, yet not worth putting up on the official site.

Yes, of course, though judging by your reaction, not one you were aware of! ;)

No I wasn't and we certainly do things the hard way.

Edmundo is quite right..........it's deemed newsworthy enough to send out to those supporters who subscribe to the SMS service yet not to those who read the official web site.

And I think was on the Rotherham website or in the programme notes.

Gulp.

I believe that the season ticket offers for next season will be released this week so keep an eye out on the Bradford City website for full details..........:)

I have to say that, although abee has explained the decision, I still don't get it. There was comment from I think Andy Scott earlier in the season enthusing about the benefit that Karleigh Osborne was getting playing alongside Matt Heywood. As there seems the strong possibility that Heywood will leave in the summer, I would have thought that getting as much game time together is essential to his continued development. And cheaper for us. I sincerely hope that Reading welcome and recognise our charity towards them.

Not a dig at Les, but I believe the Bees fans lambasting BFC for extending Bennett's loan, are the same Bees who flip and complain about the board's supposed lack of ambition, in the player transfer market.

Bennett's here, for the rest of the season.
This benefits BFc, but costs BFC.

Is it worth it ?

Time will tell.

thanks to abee for the info :sorted:

I've highlighted the key word - where's the benefit to Brentford?

Alan Bennett thread

Any game we win benefits Brentford.
He is helping us win games.

When Scott went on his fine first winning run, Heywood and Osborne were the partnership and I would suggest that Osborne's pace compliments Heywood better than Bennett.

Your saying if their was any chance in the world of either having Bennett alongside Heywood next season, or Osborne, You would pick Osborne? I think Bennett Heywood combination would be perfect for next season, although very unlikely  But i do ownder why he's still here if there is absolutely no chance in the wold of signing him

It puts him in the shop window. I think he's enjoyed getting games under his belt.

agreed mark - there are many sides in the league between reading and brentford..... he will probably be a regular in a championship side next season which may be more satisfying for him that being a reading reserve or out on loan.
