Andrews's captain

Maybe he’ll feel obliged not to name an Irishman for fear of accusations of bias? If so, who would it be?

Andrews's captain

I can’t see any alternative.

I thought Wissa stepped up last season in terms of geeing up his teammates, getting over to the ref and just generally being quite a vocal leader. I don't really like seeing the front man as captain though, feels wrong

Vita will also be expected to be one of the leaders in the group, but don't see him as a guaranteed starter. Of the midfielders I think the only definite is Damsgaard (unless any crazy offers come in) but cannot see him as captain

I think you need a captain that will play week-in-week-out.

Kinda rules out players like Pinnock, Jensen, Janelt who are the long-serving and most experienced players in the squad.

I think Collins is the only choice; he is the most well-known to KA - having been capped many times whilst Andrews was involved with ROI - and has captained the national side already. He is a nailed-on starter when available.

Nathan the obvious captain. Other candidates would include Aaron but more to encourage and support his almost unlimited growth curve.

Open and shut case. He was captain material soon as he signed for us.

Plenty have. Kane, Rooney(!), Shearer, Lineker for England.
Has to be a starter. Collins didn’t miss a minute of last season. Will have the respect of his Coach and teammates, and experience of leading his country.
Alternates from Janelt, YY, Wissa, VdB…

Why not call this the 'Banana is not an expert about apostrophes' thread and be done with it!
Blimey - you go away for a couple of days and this comes up.

- In American English, "-'s" is always added, so "Andrews's".

- In British English (which is more appropriate here), whether you add "'s" to non plural words ending in "-s" depends on the pronunciation. If it's pronounced "-ses", then there is an s after the apostrophe, otherwise not. So, "Tom Jones's hit record", but "Archimedes' laws".
So, say it to yourself. Do you pronounce it "Andrewses captain" or "Andrews captain"?

Andrews's captain

Interesting question as to when he chooses? Do you do that before pre season? Or after a few games? Collins would be excellent.

Maybe we’ve not signed them yet? Could be a new high calibre DM comes in to replace Norgaard who takes the armband straight away like Pontus did.

We’re not going to make a new recruit captain… it needs to be a player who knows our style of play, has the respect of the players in the dressing room and has a high chance of being selected every week.

Andrews's captain

Most likely to be Collins, but who steps up when he gets injured/suspended? Is Dams a possibility?

(He writes… while carefully avoiding any use of an apostrophe).

Andrews's captain

Obviously. He's not Socrates or Oyddeus
Who's Oyddeus?

Nothing to do with classical names, if that's where your mind is headed.

How about "Edgar Davids' last minute equalizer".

Or do we have to carve out another exception for Dutch Footballers?

I recall the Economist Style Guide took the view that making a possessive form of Lloyd's (as in the building, not as the bank) is an insurmountable problem and you should go to any lengths to avoid it.

I have several editions of Hart’s Rules on my shelf, along with several style books, guides for copy editors, and guides to punctuation, and a shelf full of books on typography and typesetting. I would be happy to provide advice for a modest fee.

Wissa doesn't strike me as a captain and with his contract situation he'll either be off this summer or certainly within the next year so he'd be a very short-term option. Collins seems the only candidate, as the next best option, Janelt, looks unlikely to be playing every game.

It’s nothing to do with that. It’s the house style of the org you work for. There is no “right” or “wrong”.

Maybe the GPG needs a house style?

I’ll give you for free that the apostrophe in this thread’s title uses a typewriters’ mark ( ' ), whereas it should be a typographic apostrophe ( ’ ) because the headline is presented in a formal, proportional typeface.

Not many will care, of course, except pedants like me; just as few will care that many of the thread titles here use American-style Title Case, which—to a British typographer (i.e. me)—is anathema. I note that you, @rebus, are one of the few whose thread titles are consistently well formed, typographically; I won’t name the worst serial offenders but they are amongst the mods.

As another grammar pedant, Fowler’s is my ‘go to’ authority.

Apologies to all those who have better and more important things to do with their time!

Andrews's captain

Probably simpler just to refer to “ Keith’s captain” or “The Coach’s captain”

Andrews's captain

Has to be Collins - ROI captain, been with us 2 seasons and guaranteed starter.
