Ashes build up thread

So this is the Ashes thread?

I wondered what it would look like.

I'm going :bound:

Ashes build up thread

Is it worth having a thread for each test and using this as the Ashes build up thread?

Ashes build up thread

Maybe an ashes forum :knocksoneoutwiththeexcitementofitallsmiley: :bound:

Oh and can I get some cricket opinions, short snappy throwaway comments that'll annoy the aussies but not lead to any detailed questions.

Ashes build up thread

back to this morning's result, why do we always start off like a team of no hopers, I know it is very early, but looking at that Aussie line up we played today, they would run us close in 5 test matches.
Worrying figures from Mahmood again, pace, but very very wayward.

Onwards and upwards (surely the most overused phrase on this board at the moment !).

Ashes build up thread

Was anyone surprised we lost overnight

Four days in the country, an Australia A side, without our new ball bowlers in a one-day game. Doesn't add up to an England win to me

Some worrying parts though, Read left out for Jones  Panesar only given three overs :mad1: Mahmood

I thought there were some positives to be taken from today's match, although I couldn't stay up after Cook's dismissal.

(1) ten overs from Freddie
(2) King of Spain bowling again
(3) Geraint Jones showing why Read should keep wicket
(4) Mahmood playing Anderson into the starting line up
(5) runs for Strauss
(6) Tait bowled well and this might lull the convicts into selecting him

Yes, plenty of negatives, but as WEB says, they're barely off the plane and you shouldn't underestimate the effects of a flight of that length, IMHO.

Now it will be interesting to see if you can beat the convicts 'county sides'. Well it will be interesting to see if our 'State' sides can beat your lot in the 3 days they are given.

This won't please many on here. Freddie likes batting 6 with Jones at 7. You can't keep a good man down. :fishing: Also, interesting to see Giles outbowl Panesar in the state match today.

:(

I'm not entirely surprised. Speaking with West Ealing Bee last week and he predicted that this might happen given that Fletch has more influence over selection issues on tour; I knew what he meant but didn't quite expect that it would happen.

It seems harsh on Chris Read who has done little, if anything, wrong. It's probably true to say, though, that he didn't quite do enough to solve England's batting problems at no. 7.

Surpised to read in the BBC report that "Jones kept tidily enough" in the game against PMXI. Can only assume the term has been redefined recently

vs NSW

Bowling
Hoggard 12 - 2 - 51 - 0
Harmison 15 - 1 - 76 - 1
Anderson 15 - 3 - 45 - 1
Flintoff 15 - 4 - 52 - 0 (1nb)
Panesar 18-2-54-1
Giles 15-3-46-2

Are we supposed to be scared of these bowlers? Our third best opener has scored 2 centuries in 2 games. I am looking forward to the prepared insults upon Australia winning back the ashes.

No, you don't have to be scared of our bowlers. In fact, we would prefer it if you went into the first Test with an air of arrogant superiority and complacency. :)

Anyone who seriously thinks that England can retain the ashes is out to lunch. Hand over the little urn now and put everyone out of their misery. England should set a series with Canada and maybe just maybe they might take it, although judging by the way the rugby team are performing don't hold your breath. English national teams are in any sport are in the doldrums.

Hmm not to keen on playing Flintoff and five other bowlers seems a bit inbalanced to me.

Team for 1st Test picked already?

It seems that Fletcher and Fred have already decided on a starting XI for Brisbane in their own minds.
Fred and Geraint Jones are buddies, alongside Harmison and Stauss. Flintoff has acknowledged in the past, he feels more "comfortable" with Jones in the side, it's not right how these things are done but it does go on in cricket.
Anderson has displaced Mahmood as Fletcher states he never knows what performance Mahmood will deliver.
The big debate is Giles and Monty - With the above selections England look like they would take a draw at Brisbane and move on, so my gut feeling is Fletcher and Fred are trying to protect Panesar by keeping him until later in the tour and trying to bowl Giles into contention.:nono: (I think this would be a wrong move and Monty has to play as the sole spinner at Brisbane).
At the moment Fletcher is displaying signs of nervousness in Freddies fitness and is playing it so safe that going into Brisbane we look on in hope rather than expectation. Thoughts??

....a long couple of months awaits...............

Went to the Engaland v NSW match over the weekend. Not so good.
Harmison looked rusty and was hit all over the park. Flintoff looked OK and didn't seem to be bowling off full pace. Had a few beers with the advance guard of the Barmy Army.

Maybe we should / will go in with the following XI

Trescothick
Strauss
Cook
Bell
Pietersen
Flintoff
Jones G
Giles
Hoggard
Harmison
Panesar

Encouraging reply with the bat today, against what is quite possibly (googlies apart), the Aussies starting seam attack.

We won't.

The last few days have indicated that Fletcher (and Flintoff I presume) want to get last year's Ashes team together as near as they can and replace like for like.

I would wager that the team next Thursday will be

Trescothick
Strauss
Cook
Bell
Pietersen
Flintoff
Jones
Giles
Hoggard
Harmison
Anderson

Fletcher simply won't pick a team without Giles at 8 unless he has to, and he doesn't have to here, I also can't see him picking two spinners.

Apart from the obvious mistake of leaving Panesar out I would prefer to see Pietersen at 4 and Bell at 5.

I agree. Panesar probably needed to put in a match winning performance in the current game to get anywhere near the side. It'll be interesting if he gets a few wickets in the NSW second innings.

He can't bowl them out if he doesn't bowl

England will bat for a reasonable amount of time tomorrow if they can.

Pietersen will want to get a hundred, Flintoff will want to carry on batting and Collingwood and Jones will also need a bat.

If we bat well we might not bowl at all and if we do bowl we have four fast bowlers to use first.

That'll suit Fletcher down to the ground. He can point to the two wickets Giles got in the first innings as evidence for his decision.

Good reply today !! We can forget the prime ministers game as that was a one dayer, the proper cricket started lets hope the lads get time in the middle !!

Ashes build up thread

Well, if you think 14-a-side is proper cricket. Sounds like a lot of New South Walians are distinctly unimpressed and angry with England and Fletcher. (BTW when did Peter Roebuck become a convict?)

I think it's an inevitable consequence of the crowded international schedule and the resultant foreshortening of preparatory games.

What's Roebuck been saying ? He was a rubbish player anyway.

Peter Michael Roebuck (born March 6, 1956, in Oxford, United Kingdom) is a former cricket player and is now a well-respected newspaper columnist and radio commentator. He was trained as a lawyer at Cambridge University, and was the captain of the English county side Somerset. He also captained an England one-day cricket team to defeat in Holland.......................Roebuck in 2001 was given a suspended jail sentence after admitting caning three young cricketers he had offered to coach. He pleaded guilty to three charges of common assault involving three South African teenagers between 1 April and 31 May, 1999
