I couldn’t find a general athletics thread so have started a new one.

A couple of massive world records today.

Duplantis in the pole vault. Again.




And an even more impressive smashing of the 5000m by Tsegay, almost going under 14 mins.

It’s a great shame that the sport of athletics is continually tarnished by its drug related reputation. The authorities have made several attempts over the years to punish wrong-doers, but it seems that cheats, even nations of cheats, continue to try to prosper despite the bans. But the one that makes me laugh out loud the most is Boris Onishenko’s (dubious spelling attempt) wired up sword in the Olympic Fencing competition. That was a whole new level of swashbuckling skullduggery!

Ok having now watched the race and listened to her post race interview i don’t believe she is anywhere close to being a drugs cheat… however if it is found she is then that’s it for me and athletics

Although unfortunately we did have a failed drugs test in the last Olympics.

Made even worse by the fact it cost 3 others a medal .

You do wonder what you are actually watching at times I agree but at Gill's age she will make big improvements in her performances and times and I would be very surprised if there is anything untoward.

What does get eyes raised is when fully developed adult athletes suddenly get big improvements in their performance when normally improvements are incremental.

Like Molly Caudrey. The sky is literally the limit, until one day it becomes harder to improve….

Phoebe could potentially be running at Watford Harriers on Wednesday night ✅ open to all for free. Lovely track and great viewing. No pies but beverages available. Corned beef rolls have been superb in recent years.

A caveat to this is that with such a stellar run her plans may have changed.

She has been a regular competitor there over a number of years. There should be some talent on display in the British miler's club races anyway ??

Not yet though!
Molly won at a meet in Toulouse, with a British Pole Vault record of 4.92m, beating Holly Bradshaw’s previous best. It’s also the World Leading height this year, which she already held from earlier in the season. Nobody has jumped that high since 2021, so she’s back in top form for the Olympics. (BBC).

Needs to do it on the big stage though - was heavy favourite in the European Championships but couldn't clear a modest height for her so let's see.

Kenyan breaking record ? I would hold my breath on that one.
With the amount of them getting caught doping, I'm surprised they haven't been banned till they clean up their act. We'll see if the record stands in the future.

Over on the Olympics thread, people were wondering how/why he spent so much time working for the BBC rather than on US TV, but there may be a clue in this comment from the above article:
"The hope is that heavy financial backing will turbocharge a sport that is struggling for consistent eyeballs, particularly among television audiences in the US."

Anyhow, assuming it takes off, we'll surely see less of him over here/on the BBC, which would be a shame.

As I understand it he does not like the very partisan nature of TV coverage in the USA who only generally focus on American athletes whereas the BBC , although they cover British athletes strongly also cover all events even where there is no British interest.
