Attendances in Division Two

On Saturday half of the games in the basement were under 3,000, is this some sort of record?

You now have a fair few clubs that have come up from the conference which have for the main part of their history have been non-league with crowds well below 2K being the previous norm. Such as Boston, Barnet, Macclesfield, Accrington & Hereford. Therefore anything nearing 3K for any of these clubs is a considerable increase to what they used to get in recent history whilst in non league and could therefore be seen as a improvement. :fishing:

change the name back to Division Four, the crowds flocked in them days.

Bring the conference into the FL and regionalize League Two. This has been the obvious answer for years.

Not sure why this helps clubs survive. If you look at away attendances, both ours and those at GP, I wouldn't say that geography is much of a factor except when you get a real local derby and regionalising the divisions won't make much of a change there. I think it would lead to increased stagnation (same opponents year in year out) and reduced interest in the game.

Hardly. In the bad old days of the mid '80's half of the crowds would have been under 2,000 - the average 4th division crowd in 84/5, I think I'm sad enough to recall, was about 2,700. In recent seasons its been over 4,000.

Gee Bee is right to make the point about two up/two down opening the division up to plenty of smaller former non league clubs with only a modest core support. While Accrington, Macclesfield and Barnet struggle to pull in 2,000 in the league, we've got Oxford (6,000) and Exeter (3,500) attracting FL standard crowds in the Conference.

So it makes no difference playing Carlisle rather than someone a little closer...clearly no one will be able to prove or disprove their theories until any change is made but given all the problems that teams are having financially, its seems madness not to try and maximise revenue by playing more local games...do we really not believe that we could achieve a higher average attendance by playing the likes of Wycombe, Bristol Rovers, Swindon, Barnet rather than Scunthorpe, Oldham, Chesterfield or Rotherham...

Will the Championship accept an extra relegation spot? Or are we facing a situation of champions-only for auto spots and not even play-offs if you finish fourth? Sorry, but I think you need to look at this in the round, and I reckon it will diminish interest in the lower leagues. While there would be a marginally higher (maybe 200) average gate for Wycombe/Bristol Rovers/Swindon/Barnet than for Scunthorpe/Oldham/Chesterfield/Rotherham, you would also lose out on Huddersfield who bring a lot and get Torquay, who don't. There are other examples too - for instance, we wouldn't have had Sheffield Wednesday down here in recent years. I really think that any difference would be marginal and perhaps by losing some of the bigger northern clubs, actually detrimental to attendances.

Ed, sorry I forgot, you're always correct, I must remember my place....

it would become very boring, personally I dont go to many away games anymore due to the cost so i save myself for a biggie like Carlisle away or someone of that distance...just because we may play local teams every week aint gonna make me stump up £20 every other week.

I think it's the reduced scope for promotion and relegation that would make it even less interesting if you combined all of Lge 1, Lge 2 and Conf. As someone else has said there would probably only be one promotion spot per division and probably one relegation spot - each regional division would also be too wide-ranging: a "big" club just relegated from the Championship alongside one just promoted into the conference with gates of around 1,000.

You could combine Lge 1 and Lge 2, or Lge 2 and conference (my preference) but not all 3

Seems to me we are playing the same crap every year now !!! (Bristol City, Scunthorpe etc etc)!

1 season at step 2 in 50 odd years!

Good point that...it has also meant that clubs like Rushden and Diamonds have tasted league status, clubs that are always going to be "non league" in support, even in Div 1 they could bareely muster 3000 crowds.

Bring back re-election to Div 2!!!!

it's pretty much regional now. The only southern clubs in Div 2 are Swindon, Wycombe, Torquay, Bristol Rovers and Barnet.

If Divs 1 and 2 went regional, the standard would drop even lower than it now is.
