Hi chaps.
Just a bit of background.
The old crest wasn't Morecambe FC's it was the old town corporation coat of arms. In 1974 the Morecambe Corporation was taken over by Lancaster City Council as part of the local government reorganisation at the time.
For many years MFC didn't have a badge on its shirts at all. It borrowed the town coat of arms on a few occasions for special shirts but other than that it used a big shrimp (we've been nicknamed The Shrimps since the 1960s) on shirts in the 60s and then again for a while in the 80s.
With the trend in the 90s being to return to more traditional 'shield' type badges the club 'borrowed' what was by then the redundant town coat of arms and has used it since.
The pending move to the new stadium has got the club thinking about all its operations with the need to bring in as much outside revenue as possible to keep the club thriving.
Also - last year - the town of Morecambe chose to create a new 'Town Council' which will be using, once again, the town coat of arms.
The club, as has been said in this thread does not and can not ever have any rights over that crest and doesn't want to get into an argument (either now or in the future) with the new council about its use. The club thinks it's right that the council should take it back so needs to come up with its own which it can protect against any rogue merchandising (such as we saw at Wembley when we went for the play-offs).
Also it has thought 'new stadium, new era, new crest'.
The club, through local media and its own websites, asked the fans for their views weeks before the design process got fully under way, the vast majority mentioned that they'd like to see us bring back the shrimp.
Various options were looked at by the board but in the end they wanted something striking and bold.
Okay, it's not a 'lion' or a 'wolf' or something a bit more aggressive - but it IS and has been for decades, our nickname. Fans have used it on flags and banners throughout that time and some have indeed had it tattooed on their bodies, even though it's not been on the crest for quite some years.
Because it's so striking it has divided opinion but in six months' time that will have all settled down and we'll have a crest that is (like it or not) immediately identifiable with Morecambe FC.
It is already starting to grow on (some) people who were a bit shocked at first.
I think it works far better all round than the old one. People liked that because they had become familiar with it and we all like familiarity.
Good luck for your season and hope we meet again sometime soon!
