Reading the comments about John Mackie, got me thinking about other players the fans have not liked. Some people say that fans are less tolerant these days, but i would disagree. Some of the abuse players got years ago in less pc times by some fans was much worse in my opinion. I know Barry Lloyd was ex fu**** , but the abuse he took in a promotion winning team was incredible even if he was s**t. Another i remember was Stan Webb. The good old boys were very hard to please after watching the 30's and 40,s teams and some players really got hammered.

Remember Bowan and Johnson getting alot of stick when they were our strike pair.:(
Eddie may was abused quite alot as well if i can remember ( some braemar guys wanted to lump him after one game )

I don't think many of the guys mentioned in previous posts were barracked until they had shown how poor they were. Exception is perhaps Eddie May, who wasn't that bad, but who came (a) for a high fee (b) as a replacement for Andy Sinton, and didn't live up to either of those - but if we'd signed him for £20k at another time, he would have been an acceptable Lge One player IMHO... though perhaps more suited to the pace of the Scottish game, where he managed several years at the top level after leaving us. [Think Stan Webb also got stick as he was signed to replace O'Mara - if I remember rightly - and wasn't in the same league, in fact was very poor]

Finney got perhaps the most abuse, though Mackie was reaching those levels

Ian Holloway and Tom Finney were the first I ever heard booed.

Marcus Bent drew a lot of criticism aswell from some terrace experts.

Barry Lloyd looked and played like John Inman for us, Graham Wilkins was universally disliked after about 1 games and we groaned a lot at Murray Jones as well.

There's a few who have turned it around. Bob Booker took a lot of stick at GP and it took a long time for him to win people around. Even a hat-trick early on in his career didn't help and it was his performance as an emergency fullback against (I think) Fulham that started to change people's opinions.

I got stick at the start of one season, not because i was sh*tt, but bcos i hadn,t agreed to a new contract, and none of you knew the circumstances!!!
Murray Jones got stick, (the whole of one season) not becos he hadn,t signed a new contract, but because? Yes you guessed it...
And i can always remember Big Bob getting stick every game..But funny enough it was sort of OK. It never stopped me going in every pub in Brentford and having a beer and a laugh with the fans..Were all human eh:sorted:

Well Bob.. I was offered a 2 year contract in the Premiere League ( then 1st Div)
And the bees offered me a 1 year with them.. It was a very hard decision and took a couple of weeks. And what did i go and do?? Sign for the club with the best variety of PUBS....But i,m happy and healthy...:sorted:

Thinking about players who were barracked but eventually won the crowd over, Keith Jones was definitely a prime example. Although he scored quite a spectacular goal in his debut, he endured a miserable time from the crowd during the early phase of his Brentford career. I suspected at the time that this was a combination of both disappointment with his form and because he was black. However Perryman, spotting something which had eluded most of the crowd, made him captain and it proved an inspiring move. He gradually grew in stature (helped admittedly by being alongside Andy Sinton) until the point where the team simply failed to function as efficiently when he wasn't playing.

The last time I saw him playing was for Southend against us during our one year in the old Division 1. I can recall the New Road giving him a hearty rendition of 'you should have stayed at the champions', at which he broke into a wide grin.

I think it may also have been the type of player he is: what is now commonly called the 'Makelele role' of defensive midfielder. As he was signed from a higher level for a (modest) fee, people were looking for some barn-storming character who would take games by the scruff of the neck, not a tidy well-organised player who kept the side ticking over. Same happened to Paul Smith (the MF, not the GK), Mahon and - though not as good - Talbot.

Yeah, I remember you coming on as sub on the first day of the 1991-92 season against Orient and getting some dreadful stick - they weren't saying that nine months later...

Stop bumlicking please, some of us refused to celebrate him scoring at Peterborough and still won't allow us to remembered as winning the league that day.

I remember that as an absolutely fantastic game, won 4-3 though Ricky Otto murdered us. Was there an almighty 20 man brawl in the middle of the pitch as well?

I remember him dithering over a throw in for so long he was getting booed by us, he honestly looked like he was going to cry.

I was telling markbfc to put his tongue away and stop doing his usual in that earlier post but I wasn't the hugging man.
