Barry Thornley

Barry Thornley played for the Bees in the mid 60s, having joined from Gravesend & Northfleet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Thornley . One of the contractors I work with knows him well and used to be in the same Gravesend team as him. I see from Wikipedia that he made 7 appearances in the 65-66 season and wondered if someone could look through their programme collection and let me know which games these were please? I'll then pass the information on. Thanks.

I remember that home defeat to Bristol Rovers. Sad times. (Not sure that substitutes were allowed then, but am willing to be corrected.)

They were, as Barry was a an unused sub prior to that game.

Hughie McLaughlin was the first on Oct. 23 '65 v Oldham Home 0-0

On the cover of a following programme, versus Millwall, was a picture from the match versus Oldham.

I believe this would've been his last appearance as a Bee, versus Mansfield Town on 6 May 1967, in the London Combination.

I have my uses........ :looks:

I might be wrong but I vaguely remember him as a young blonde or even ginger left winger who came into a struggling team.

I think he joined Oxford United after leaving us.

Barry Thornley

I seem to remember being a very excited youngster when his signing was announced and he was described as the new Denis Law. Sadly that never came to fruition.

Saw him score the equaliser at Watford in the mid 60's and that evening describing the game to Eric White, to whom I used to deliver the evening classified at his home in Norwood Green. 1-1 draw I think. I got a mention in the programme the following Saturday too!

Never scored for Brentford in the Football League. Must’ve been a reserve match? Scored 5 in 1965/66 London Combination.

Yes, I think it might have been Ian Lawther but I think Barry had an assist, maybe from a corner? He played really well that day on his debut.

What a good memory! ;)

Talk about over-hyping someone and raising expectations

Thanks for all the info and particularly to Paul for the programme covers and other excerpts. I've sent a link to this thread to the contractor I work with and I'm sure he'll send it to Barry.
