BBC SPOTY 2017

Apart from the usual bemusement at the word personality, there is a lot oft tokenism going on this year

Elise Christie - Short Track Speed Skating Dont care
Sir Mo Farah - Athletics Fair enough
Chris Froome - Cycling Fair enough
Lewis Hamilton - F1 Fair enough, but is it all about the car, plus morally weak with his tax shenanigans
Anthony Joshua - Boxing Fair enough
Harry Kane - Football, Didnt win a trophy so not sure he justifies it
Johanna Konta - Tennis Slightly above average tennis player, whoopy do
Jonnie Peacock - Para-athletics Dont care
Adam Peaty - Swimming Maybe
Jonathan Rea - Motorcycling Dont care
Anya Shrubsole - Cricket Shut up
Bianca Walkden - Taekwondo Is this a wind up

BBC SPOTY 2017

Konta won a biggish title and did well at Wimbledon
Then could not even qualify for year end finals.

Farah ONLY won one gold !!

Kane won Nothing

Its
Joshua
Hamilton
Froome
Top 3 on performance

But there is always one who gets in Top 3 due to public vote being impossible to predict

BBC SPOTY 2017

Peaty should be in with a shout, although swimming isn't big box-office. After his Olympic gold and world records last year, he continued his good form in 2017. He retained his 100m breaststroke title at World Championships, breaking the championship record. Broke his own world record twice in the 50m breaststroke on the way to winning the World Championship title in that too. Also a silver in the World Championships relay with a new British record.

BBC SPOTY 2017

Gotta be AJ, surely?

He actually meets the criteria of being a personality, too.

I’ve drunk glasses of water that had more personality that Joshua,he just comes out with that media trained “stay hungry, stay humble” guff.

BBC SPOTY 2017

Sorry, unless they have lined up a special award for him, why isn't Jermaine Defoe on the list.

Yes I know he played for Sunderland etc but after all he did with Bradley Lowery he deserves something

BBC SPOTY 2017

How about the Helen Rollason award ?

BBC SPOTY 2017

Agree with the main post, but this programme has become more and more PC and has gone half way up its own backside (rather like the BBC itself) in an effort to prove it can be inclusive to all as years have gone on. I stopped watching it about 10 years ago. Used to be an absolute 'must see' when I was younger, but I really couldn't give a monkey's now.

And I didn't even get to mention smarmy Lineker, ubiquitous Balding and Crabby Logan. 3 more good reasons to not bother.

Did you watch the programme before the Klitchsko fight that the two comedians did with him? Was very good and he came across very well. I hope he wins it.

Agree completely. Absolute load of cr*p.

Dunno anything about swimming, but i remember reading a profile of Peaty and apparently he has taken his events to a new level - not just speed and records, but technique.
It persuaded me that he deserves wider recognition.

Lewis Hamilton - F1 - Fair enough, but is it all about the car, plus morally weak with his tax shenanigans
No idea about his driving or his car etc, but I'd be prepared to take a guess about his "personality".

And imo he shouldn't even be allowed back into the country to pick up the award, never mind win it.

He bangs on about his humble background in Stevenage (Council House, ordinary school etc), but not in order to inspire others back home, but to let us all know how far he has come.

Moved to Switzerland because he was suffering "too much intrusion on his private life" in the UK etc, and you might think sleepy old Switzerland was fine. Yet he then moved again, this time to Monte Carlo! The fact that Switzerland had just changed their tax laws on expatriates earnings etc, and Monaco doesn't impose any Income Tax being the real reason, not this "intrusion" bulls hit.

Which means that his unwillingness to put a bit back eg towards Stevenage's schools, hospitals and social housing etc is just taking the piss. Worse still, he is also taking the piss out of his fans, who spend significant (taxed) hard-earned money to follow him at Silverstone and elsewhere.

But still, he wraps himself in the Union Flag when he wins his "home" Grand Prix, so that's all right then. :very angry:

Oh and I nearly forgot, we should take back his MBE, too.

Wouldn't you do the same?

BBC SPOTY 2017

Wouldn't you do the same?
It's a good question.

It depends on how moral the person is really doesn't it? Stay tax domicile and pay half your earnings into the country of your birth or become tax non-domicile and live in a tax haven and keep it all.

Personally I don't blame anyone for becoming tax non-domicile considering how our governments mismanage our country and squander what taxes they do bring in. On the other hand, if someone chooses to become tax non-domicile, not live here more than 6 months of the year they should be stripped of their residency and English passport and forced to make a choice be allowed back into this country and pay your taxes or live overseas.

But our government is too nancy pancy to ever bring in something like that, so anyone with any money hides it offshore in tax havens or becomes tax non-domicile.

BBC SPOTY 2017

Just an aside, Hamilton lived in Knebworth and it wasn’t a council house!!! It’s fun seeing History change to suit the individuals !!

BBC SPOTY 2017

Chris Froome - Cycling Fair enough
Lewis Hamilton - F1 Fair enough, but is it all about the car, plus morally weak with his tax shenanigans

Chris Froome lives in Monaco. You could argue that it’s a hotbed of cycling with the weather allowing for year round training.

It does also benefit from being a low tax environment, so if Hamilton is excluded on the “tax shenanigan” rule then so should Froome.

The wibs amendment could actually take a number of sports people out of the SPOTY running. E.g McIlroy & Rose base themes in low tax jurisdictions.

Maybe eligibility for SPOTY nominee is to hold a valid TV licence?

BBC SPOTY 2017

Let me see. Hamilton is said to be worth £140m (if he's not, he will be by the time he retires). I don't begrudge him that. But if he only paid 40% on his worth, he'd still have £100m left.
And it doesn't matter if he lives a life of complete luxury till he's 100, he still couldn't spend that much.
Even then, if he didn't flaunt his conspicuous spending and bling so ostenatiously, I mightn't mind quite so much.
But the fact that he keeps referring to his humble background, plus love of his country etc, that gets my goat.

Whereas if I had his money, I genuinely think I'd be happy to give something back to the country which brought me into this world in an NHS hospital, educated me in a state school, treated me for free when I was ill, put me through University and paid me benefits when I was on the dole.

Or, to put it another way, follow the example of eg Andy Murray, another millionaire sportsman whose job takes him all over the world. He could choose to live in loads of places which would suit his lifestyle/itinerary as easily as the UK - he spends a big chunk of his time training in Florida, for instance.

Yet afaiaa, he's still domiciled in the UK for tax purposes.

That's a fair enough point, until you consider that if someone opts out of paying his taxes for that reason, did he also opt out from benefiting from other peoples' taxes as well? (Education, Health, Social Security, Pension etc).
In other words, if you don't like the way your Government runs the country, then why not go and live somewhere else before you start taking from the country, not after you start earning big bucks?

On the other hand, if someone chooses to become tax non-domicile, not live here more than 6 months of the year they should be stripped of their residency and English passport and forced to make a choice be allowed back into this country and pay your taxes or live overseas.

With you there, all right! :sorted:

Think Joshua will win.. that fight against Klitshko was one of the most exciting I've seen in a while.. also has a good story of a troubled, young man turning his life around... Farah & Froome in the other spots...

But Now the Kenyan/SouthAfrican/LiveinMonaco/ /Failed a Test

Chris Froome has NO CHANCE

Incorrect.

Chris Froome is facing questions after returning an "adverse" drugs test at the Vuelta a Espana.

The Team Sky rider had double the allowed level of legal asthma drug Salbutamol in his urine.

Cycling's world governing body the UCI wants more details from the team but says Froome is not suspended.

The Briton, 32, says he increased his dosage but it was within the legal limits and the UCI is "absolutely right" to ask questions.

Froome says he took his team doctor's advice to up his inhaler use after his asthma symptoms got worse during the Vuelta.

He became the first Briton to win the three-week race around Spain and it followed his Tour de France victory in July.

He was notified of the "adverse analytical finding" on 20 September 2017.

The urine test, taken on 7 September, showed levels of the drug, Salbutamol, which is commonly taken for asthma, were at 2,000 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml).

That compares to the World Anti-Doping Agency's threshold of 1,000 ng/ml.

The use of Salbutamol is permitted, without the need of a therapeutic use exemption (TUE), but only within certain doses.

No other samples taken from Froome during the competition needed further examination.

The information has only come to light following a Team Sky statement on Wednesday, issued on the back of recent media reports.

The UCI also published details of their investigation on Wednesday.

The UCI says analysis of Froome's A and B samples shows levels which exceed the limit.

Team Sky insist the rider inhaled no more than the permissible dose

Froome, who has suffered with asthma since childhood, says he welcomed the investigation.

"It is well known that I have asthma and I know exactly what the rules are. I use an inhaler to manage my symptoms (always within the permissible limits) and I know for sure that I will be tested every day I wear the race leader's jersey.

"My asthma got worse at the Vuelta so I followed the team doctor's advice to increase my Salbutamol dosage. As always, I took the greatest care to ensure that I did not use more than the permissible dose.

"I take my leadership position in my sport very seriously. The UCI is absolutely right to examine test results and, together with the team, I will provide whatever information it requires."

Mo won.

But in the mother of all cock ups, as it was announced he had won, they lost the satellite feed to all the way back to where he was in, er, London!!

Cue much flustered airtime filling by the presenters

Glad Tax Dodgers didn't make the top three.

Agree with most of what you say but 40% of 140 isn’t 40 lol

How the hell do you have the first clue where Andy Murray is 'domiciled for tax purposes'

BBC SPOTY 2017

Lifetime Achievement award (especially given the venue)

Should have been Kenny Dalglish

Ennis

At 31

Seriously ????

BBC SPOTY 2017

Not what it was this programme but happy for Mo as he deserves it as much as anyone else.

What a cynical and "click bait" of an article that is by the Mail, why mention what Paula Radcliffe's husband may or may not have mouthed, is this to publically put down the achievements of Mo?

BBC SPOTY 2017

I think if Farah had ever thought he had a chance.

He would have made the small effort to make it to Liverpool

He must be feeling a bit let down with the shambles of the interview and video link

Maybe his son being removed earned him the winning votes !!

BBC SPOTY 2017

I think if Farah had ever thought he had a chance.

Why does he have to bring his kids out into these things, he did it at the World Championships this summer? Also is ther not some doubt over his training, re supplements?

BBC SPOTY 2017

Exactly

Who on here could bring their partner or kids to their workplace ?

Iblamedenniswise for starting it

BBC SPOTY 2017

How the hell do you have the first clue where Andy Murray is 'domiciled for tax purposes'
Asked if he would consider becoming a tax exile, Murray replied he “wouldn’t want to live somewhere just to pay no tax and not to have my family and friends around me … I wouldn’t do that”.

BBC SPOTY 2017

Apart from Michael Johnson, and arguably Jess Ennis and Kenny Dalglish, It was a real z list cast this year. Federer couldn't even be bothered to do an acceptance video.

I remember When SPOTY was back in London, you would get some the Pele's, the Ali's, the Federer's of this world turning up every year. These days even Tim Henman, Johnny Wilkinson and Kelly holmes can't be bothered to turn up.

Hope they never let you do the strapline or logo for a big event - just trying to be helpful.
